I am super happy with my Hibiscus, they seem to bloom continuously and love the sun. However I need to water them even twice a day! it is time for a repot.
▼▼▼More info bellow!▼▼▼
I am doing an experiment with my 6 Hibiscus. I want to pot 3 different plants in one pot. The purpose is to create a nice multicolored shrub when I will start to prune.
Researching this subject it would seem there is no danger in community potting, but I cannot know for sure until I try it. So I chose 2 decently large pots t fit 3 small hibiscus for now.
If this works I will have a planter with what appears to be a 3 colored shrub :D won;t that be cool?

My girlfriend's hibiscus sucks up an entire watering can of water every day. It's been putting out 2 blooms a day since I secretly started giving it extra water. The flowers are bright red and 8 inches across. It's impressive

I love the yellow with orange center and the deep red ones, we used to have a lot of hibiscus in our old house in South Florida. One tip is to pinch off the old blooms to keep it constantly flowering and if you want to experiment, you can cross pollinate them! They will not self pollinate but they will cross pollinate much like orchids, and therefore it makes a hybrid hibiscus. Definitely check out hibiscus pollination and try it out to see what you can create! Very easy to propagate from cuttings and seeds

Hi, I am going to try pollination, one of them came with a seedpod already so that is fun :P will do that in the future definitely ;)

+MissOrchidGirl sounds good! I would love to have a hibiscus here but the ones I like are too expensive.On the bright side, my huge flowered cattleya has a sheath and it looks like there's a bud forming! I got it early this year with one bud and then after flowering went right into growth mode, its maturing right now so maybe it does bloom twice a year! Such a beautiful orchid: Blc. Hello Danny, replant the hibiscus in a larger vase up to twice the size of the current one, if where you live is very hot in the summer try to adapt a semi hydroponic system, hibiscus loves the soil wet but not soaked, manages the plant two in two weeks and everything will go well.

I quite expected all the pots to be as crowded as that third one. As a rule of thumb, plants grow as much roots as they do stems and leaves. So if you imagine all your top growth scrunched up in the pot, that's about how the roots would fit. No wonder they needed water daily! The new communities will surely be happier!
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 лет назад
Hi, indeed they did have a strong root system and I am guessing they are spending quite a lot of energy on the buds, they are pretty full of them at the moment :) I was contemplating pruning now, but I think I will wait until spring, they are still tiny and have too many buds :P oh last night I came home late, they were looking fantastic, while the one in the tiny pot was already wilted though I watered him in the morning. So it did the trick :P

Beautiful Plants ! I bought a wonderful Phalaenopsis you would like aswell becaue it has a wonderfull scent.It is called Phlaenopsis Dragon`s Gold. I found it in a Supermarket and i saw at a first glance it had to be fragrant because it looked more like a Species-Phal. The Scent is really pleasant not overpowering but you sure can smell it if you are nearby.

Hey OG! I grow hibiscus in my summer garden and indoor winter garden. I do have all the colors you have and more.... What you need in your medium is vermiculite or coconut core it will hold the water in the medium ,so that you do have to water 2X daily. I used bottle or rain water on my potted hibiscus. The stuff in the top water is hard on your hibiscus. You will have to spray for spider mites, a fertilizer with high phosphate to make them bloom continuously and full sun or special plant lighting. The double petals are even prettier good luck I watch for your next video

Just get an extra large saucer and keep it full with water! I have some hardy hibiscus for my zone and plopped 2 right into my pond as I was going to plant them later and I didn't want them to dry out....they were forgotten about and have been living there for about 3 years now and do great! They are right in the water near the edge!

@MissOrchidGirl 8 лет назад
:D thanks I'll keep that in mind when these grow a bit more, so far this pot did the trick, they are all hydrated properly at least for a few days :) I've noticed they react so fast to lack of water and then after watering straighten up in 15 minutes, quite amazing :P

How do you know when you overwatered your hibiscus
@sunitaramsackal1587
@sunitaramsackal1587 7 лет назад
Hi! I live in Trinidad, West Indies. They are hardy plants and they can grow huge. Here we grow them in the ground. The require watering often because they have lots of foliage and the water evaporates quickly. They only one main problem here are Mealybugs....and they harmed many of my plants. Good luck with your beautiful plants. They are one of the most beautiful blooms you will find!
@sunitaramsackal1587

When you prune, you can actually use the cuttings to propagate new plants. Use the hard stems for this. The soft young stems may not send out roots as good as the older stems.

The hibiscus at 7:28 is fine. Sometime they lose their bud if the environment changes. Just repot and feed it properly, it will bloom. Don't let it stay in it old pot, it too small and the roots can't grow. Believe me, I met the same case. It just produce bud and drop, but I repot it, and the year after it bloom perfectly. Some bud might drop just because the plant is small, and that double flowers take a lot of energy, so they save the best and drop the weaker. Don't worry.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 лет назад
Hi, thanks for the confidence :D I will repot him separate indeed but, I doubt it's a 'bud drop' problem. They split, they open halfway they stay like that 2 days and then they wilt. But I'll see what happens after repotting, if he blooms properly I'll surely make a video :D

They look so pretty! I only have a red one in my backyard; would have preferred a pink or multicolor, but it's pretty nonetheless. It's a shame about the ruffled hibiscus though, maybe you can buy a new one or something.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 лет назад
Yes I am sorry for it too, it really looks faulty :( I'll see what they bring at the garden center, strangely enough they don't have hibiscus here that often, this was just a lucky find, I think I bought most of the ones they brought :P I hope I guessed the pink one too.. at first I bought a few and went back a few times, but they had no flowers so I just guessed by the spent flowers :P

It could be that the one that doesn't want to open isn't getting enough water or enough sun or enough nutrients to support the full development. Hibiscus are heavy feeders and I fertilize mine daily. Hibiscus only bloom from new growth. You can encourage a busier plant with pruning and pinching the growing tips. They all start out twig like because most are complex hybrids and can only be reliably propigated through cuttings. They don't like wet feet but they don't like completely drying out. They can be pruned to maintain size and shape. They are hardy and fast growing enoguh once they are established that I unpot them once every couple years and actually trim off roots. this prevents the plant from becoming too root bound and suffering and helps maintain the size. Hibiscus can grow to very impressive sizes if allowed. Though if you fo trim the roots you need to be careful to cut enough of the leaves/stems back so the remaining root system can support the rest of the plant. Any type of pruning will set a plant back in the sense that it won't flower for a little while as is focuses on producing new growth nodes. once these nodes start to develop they grow quickly and you are rewarded with prolific blooms. Keep an eye on them carefully. In one of my HVH newsletters they cautioned about potting multiple hibiscus together. What tends to happen is one plant is stronger or a more vigorous grower than the other and eventually strangles the weaker plant. They have observed a few exceptions to this but the majority of the time one plant will take over. Just keep an eye out for signs of distress and be ready to do an emergency repot if it appears as if one is overtaking the others. Also be aware of what kind of fertilizer you use. Try to find one with low phosphorus (the middle number). Hibiscus store phosphorus and eventually it inhibits the plants ability to take up micro nutrients such as copper, iron and magnesium. A fertilizer high in potassium (third number on fertilizer) is needed for best flower production. My hibiscus blend fertilizer is a 17-5-24. Warning.. there are so many and more every year as they only take about 2 years to reach maturity. They can be as addicting as orchids because there are so many flower and foliage variations. I'll have to get some more updated pictures of mine soon.

Hi, thanks for all the info :D I'll keep an eye out definitely and see if there is any taking over the pot. I was considering using the rain mix with them as it has low P and high K, however I used it twice and some leaves started to yellow a bit, maybe it was a coincidence but I stopped using it. I might try it again since I have it, though I feel this new soil has some nutrients too and I need to let them deplete first. Thanks again for all the info!

To promote branching you can pinch out the growing tip, using your fingers just the smallest leaves. This stop apecical growth habit and gives a full bushy appearance

Very nice. IMO hibiscus plants are generally speaking Very thirsty. Even my small plants need a bit of water once a day or so. But they tolerate quite a lot of pruning and such. And the flowers are nice in salads if they fall off. Not sure if this really is the case, but I read that Hibiscus plants like some coffee every now and then.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 лет назад
Hi, yep they don;t like to be too dry, but I didn't imagine they needed water twice a day, that's extreme :P You know, Brad uses coffee for his carnivorous plants, or at least he did. My brother uses coffee in his vegetable garden too as it has some trace elements. I'll make sure to look into it :)
