I had to (mostly) give up my bonsai dreams when I moved to salt Lake, I wanted to grow Maples, but it’s getting so hot, 107F, 42C, and so cold, 0-5F, -15C, plus single digit humidity and hot, dry winds. I had a genetic dwarf maple, Chiba I think, in a huge, half whiskey barrel on my cement patio. It really started to suffer, nearly 35% brown dieback in end of summers, (but the dieback always protected the underneath part) so I broke the barrel apart, and a neighbor helped me carve off the sides. I used my one huge Japanese ceramic tub type bonsai pot, it sits way too high, and I wasn’t holding out too much hope for success, and I put it in my cooler backyard under a young apple tree. Shockingly it has not only survived, but thrived. I’d love to repot again to try to continue to lower it in the pot..and start pruning it. It is so, so dense it’s never needed pruning to look like a fantastic tree, with naturally tiny leaves..

Watching you evaluate the trees at Wisley and finally watching the repotting process As usual there is so much knowledge in your videos. So much. How you use sphagnum never ceases to amaze me. I wonder what chemical activity is at work in the sphagnum. It is going to be really amazing to watch the trees as they grow through the years. Just amazing. 🙏😔🙏

Hi Peter, thank you for another excellent bonsai video!! I don't have any of those size, of course, I'm just very much a newbie. I want you to know that I love listening to you and that you demystify some of the "rules" that I have heard from some other bonsai teachers. Even tho that is one of ways you help, all of your other teachings are so important. I love that you share with us in a very easy to understand manner that even I can comprehend what you are teaching. I know that you personally love the large trees, especially maples, and that you sometimes have trouble trimming the tops when you're alone. You should make a sturdy four or six wheel tabletop that is six to eight inches (or more) lower than your permanent exterior tabletops. You could even make some of the wheels lockable in place. I think you would find lots of uses for such a sturdy cart, especially when you go to work on your lovely, large trees!! Lots of love, Peter. God bless your upcoming week!!

Love the big beach Peter. That modification of the front view was absurely gorgeous in my eyes, I know each of us,has our own concept of beauty. It seemed that removing the crooked leader and reversing the front did not reduce the height very greatly and yet enhanced the taper. You are a true Master at work. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I think the forest planting gets more subject to dieback as well as the species tendency is the pot geometry in relation to the soil shape..when the fine roots invade the top moss creating a mound, it’s great when moist, but it’s more prone (the mounded part) to rapid drying, more wet/dry cycles. Perhaps a marginally deeper pot could help with that, and encouraging a flatter “Forest floor”..

Thanks Peter, enjoying your bonsai’s journey. “Large bonsai”. I have a two peach trees, at least 15 years old and about 1.5 metres tall and metre wide. Currently on the ground. Is it possible to make a bonsai out of them? They’re healthy and doing ok. Don’t know if they are “dwarfs”??? How do I go about it? Would appreciate your advice. 🙏🙏🙏🐝

Peter, this winter was very mild. I brought lots of 3-4 foot tall willow cuttings into the house & placed them into really large plastic jugs of water. They leafed out, rooted. I used leftover wire to learn wiring, shaping from when my new garage was built & the electrician left different length pcs all over the place. I love the way they looked. Especially the copper wire that had been stripped already. I'll try it on maples, forsythia etc come June after last frost. Can you please tell me, if I used sand in larger pots would the roots stay better & not become so hard packed? Perhaps manure tea would have to be used occasionally since less nutrients would be in sand than your soil mixes. I want to do human high mixed forest bonsai containers for a front patio. I'll make the pots as soon as it warms up a bit more so that I can count on it curing properly. Do you ever use tufa pots?

@peterchan3100
@peterchan3100 Год назад
Whatever you do - DONT buy the SEED KITS - They are an absolute con ! Buy ordinary Tree seeds if you want to grow from seed but I Dont recommend growing bonsai from seed if you are a beginner. Buy nursery trees like Mugo pine, Procubems juniper, Larch and so on. A pair of Twig scissors, a root rake, some bonsai wire is a good basic starter kit as far as tools go.
