LOL At first I thought that PVC was overkill until I saw the actual size of your Monstera. WOW Nice call. The shower flange is brilliant. Power was off here yesterday and oh boy the darkness coming early had real meaning. I am so used to all my plant lights. Add to that the crazy thunder storm black clouds. Went from sunny to almost full dark in minutes. Was an exciting storm. Even lost power for a couple hours. House was cozy snuggled under a throw with kitties on my lap.
@@TropicalPlantParty Not too many tornados here. There was what they called a Micro Burst that ripped through higher up. I do not know the difference to them verses a tornado. damage looked the same to me. Ripped tops off of many pine trees. And now the two trees in my yard are down and gone I only have one tall one left. This one is at my furthest fence line so it can not fall on the house.
Jeff, there was so much good information in this one... the way you used the pvc and flange...the wicking cord for poles.... and it always makes me SO happy to hear a plant person who knows their stuff be so casual and confident about projects because they trust the plant and it's own ability to do what it does naturally. So many think that they have to baby everything and that they are in control....but these plants know what they're doing, too! :)
Thanks Reb! I always prefer to give them their space, meet their requirements and let them tell me what they need. Ideally they never show signs of needing a change, but I think it's better to pay attention and be reactive rather than go over board and over-mother-smother them.
Hi Jeff! This was fun watching and listening to you as you repotted your Monstera Thai Constellation. Until you repotted it I didn't realize how big it really is. It's so beautiful! I remember when you first came up with the idea of making the pole. That is such a great idea and being able to extend it is genius! It looks really good in the pot with the Monstera. I have some pothos and philodendrons that I want to do moss poles for, but have never done it before, so am a little intimidated. I may do a smaller version of yours with the flange and pvc. I bought a rectangle liner on clearance to cut down and use. I just need to "get 'er done"! 😕 I had a golden pothos in my kitchen that had a couple of really long vines that went up the window onto the top of the cupboard. When I decided to move it, the roots had gone through the paint. I was so shocked by this, so I'm more careful where I put them. 🤣 Pumpkin is so funny when you get the camera out, and Toby is so cute loving on you. Thank you so much for sharing!
Ha! You have a great memory, that was a long time ago! Those pothos are impressive aren't they? I put a tiny little marble queen in my aquarium filter last winter and I think I need to take it out because it's digging it's roots into the wood of the stand and I dont want it to interfere with structural integrity.
So nice to hear from you...nice set up,...you could mist the coconut wrap to encourage roots to reach for it.. Those air roots are something else...I've found them reaching all over the sun room...up the painted wall along window frames....outta site into other pots....thanks for sharing nice big new leaves....
Great idea i will remember that next time. For now to help my pepper plants and my butterfly vines i use limbs from a tree they trimed down next door. Tney work fine for them. I would love the monsera but not easy to find in Michigan City. Keeping my eye out to see if Lowes surprises me 1 day
Looks great! I'm a fan of big poles. 🤐 They seem to help add more structure to the garden than a thin pole. You might have seen mine, I put one of those coconut fiber hanging baskets onto a 4" drain piece and sat it on top of the poles...replaced the plants in the top twice cause that top basket dries out much faster than the lower pot. I have a 6" round pole done, but it's just sat in a corner of the room all season. 4" diameter PVC is the perfect size.
Ha! Well lately I've been underwatering and need to step my game up. I've been in the growspace so much trying to get work done and then don't want it to be wet while I'm working... then I forget and next thing you know it's night time. Urgh! 😂😅 going to give everything a heavy drink tomorrow.
WoW!! That’s huge!! I’m glad i saw your video, very informative. 👏👏👏 Do you still remember that size of that coconut liner that you used for it? Thanks!
Looks great! How big was it when you first got it? I got a small one. Finally caved and made a spag moss pole for him. Thanks for sharing and happy to see you and your plants again! :)
Man she hates your camera these days. Mmm, PVC cement. Best to use that in a small, poorly ventilated space and get a little dizzy. Two things that surprised me here. 1) you didn't use the hose to blast away a lot of the old soil and loosen the root ball since the old mix and the new mix are going to dry at different rates and getting fresh mix around even the old roots would be beneficial. 2) you didn't position it where that lowest bend went around the pole and the plant then sort of wraps around the pole back to the front. If my Vanilla vine is any indicator, the Monstera roots are just going to dig through that coco liner and find the PVC anyway. People think orchid roots are these delicate things (well, yeah, they are) but when they want to get somewhere, they just push on through.
I think she has started to associate the camera with me throwing her treats, so she gets extra hyper when I point it at her. Oh most of the soil just fell out on it's own. The aroid mixes I make don't usually have sphagnum in them which sticks to roots. Thats why I didn't see a need to blast out the soil, the majority just fell out and what didn't I tickled out with my fingers. So true about the orchid roots! I have to peel my vandas from anything they were too close to every fall when I bring them inside. The coconut was mostly for appearances, we both know they will cling on to a pvc pole without hesitation.
