They aren't really hard to grow, but so much of what they need goes against normal growing care and conditions. People just don't realize that and the death cubes do not usually do a good job educating. My goal here is to help people around the world grow venus flytraps and other carnivorous plants. I'm hoping I can assist an entire generation of carnivorous plant growers!

Thanks for the tips! when i got my first Venus Flytrap, I added some peat moss thinking it was nutrient and mineral free but i didnt notice that since it was miracle grow they added thing not good for it and slowly my venus flytrap died. I have since learned from that and i use pure sphagnum moss. Still trying to find perlite without any minerals or nutrients for my drosera graomogolensis and drosera adelae!
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Год назад
Perlite is fairly inert, so most perlite doesn't have any additives to it. You just want to rinse off the dust before using it. And yes, many have fallen victim to the Miracle Grow peat moss.

I have looked for peat moss and perlite at Lowe’s and Home Depot. All these have nutrients. So I had to go with long fiber sphagnum moss. Still trying to find a happy medium here. My plants are showing signs of vigorous growth. But the new growth quickly develop black tips! Lighting and temperature is good so I’m at a loss. Recently I noted the moss was excessively wet. That’s taking a bit between the fingers and squeezing.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Год назад
If they are turning black before opening, something is definitely wrong. Is it possible you have a pest issue? I've had to battle spider mites a few times, when they get bad, traps don't even open up, just turn black and die. What is the lighting situation, what kind of water are you using? If moss is excessively wet, crown rot is a possible problem. If you have crown rot, you need to take the plant out of the substrate and try to scrape away the rot from the rhizome. In the future, you will need to be a little more cautious when watering. They shouldn't be soaking wet all the time. I have a video that shows crown rot here, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TvwukHsGxxo.html, you should also watch my full video on watering, here is part 1 - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9M5JHPIMrgk.html

@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Thank you so much for your response!! I’ve used a magnifying glass to look closely for any perpetrators, but no sign, thank God. Lighting? I have them under a grow light. LED bulb. The kind with the switch on the bulb? Water? Zero water! The best! I’ve been told to put in full sun but that was so intense it almost burned it to death. 98* low humidity. Fresno CA. I kept the trays watered but still they burned. So…under this LED you can see they’re sprouting vigorously, but like I’ve said.. the tiny traps turn black before they can develop and open. Very depressing!
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Год назад
Sound like the most likely issue us crown rot. When indoors you have to be really careful with water. I'd recommend pulling it out and checking the rhizome. Try to.remove any rot then repot. I'd recommend trying outside again. Acclimate it to the sun slowly, start with an hour of early morning sun per day. Ramp up as you see it's not burning. Keep acclimating until it's in full sun.

I recently lost my youngest flytrap, who was the offspring of my bigger Flytrap, Cleopatra. We were getting some pretty intense heat, and I had to water the plants every day, sometimes twice. One day, my mom died after a long battle against cancer, so I was away for two days not watching the garden. The little guy got cooked to death under our sun. He had a little green and for a moment seemed like he would bounce back (he did grow one trap) but that trap just turned brown. Now he is completely brown and all traps are dead TnT

@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Год назад
It's hard to diagnose exactly what is wrong. It could be many things. How long have you had them? It's actually possible that they have been without light for weeks and being put in sun has hit them hard and caused them to droop. I'd pull them out of the sun, keep them in indirect light for the rest of the day. Then put them back in the sun for another hour or two tomorrow. Slowly acclimate them, usually they can't take full sun right away, you have to slowly acclimate them. Putting them in full sun right off the bat can kill them. It could also be not enough water or it could be that the water or substrate you are using has too high of dissolved solids and the plant is slowly dying. It could be not enough water, it could be too much water. Did you repot it? If so, it could just be repot shock. There is just so much it could possibly be. If you could provide some detailed info on what you are doing for care and the status of the flytraps, I might be able to be a bit more specific.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Год назад
@Sebastian Ntvik Be cautious with this advice, an hour or two is enough right out of the store. They eventually need to be full sun, but if put in full sun right away, they can burn and die.
@MPoutdoors14

@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Thanks for your response. Yes, I repotted it right away in peat moss only ( do I have to have perlite?) I watered it with distilled water in a tray. Then put it morning sun for an hour and that was all, later in the day it started to droop and has been like that since then. Today marks the 5 day mark of me having them. Not much has changed but not gotten worse. I do think that it probably was repot shock. Thanks for your time and let me know your thoughts!

a problem i've had recently is that during rain (we get some very heavy and violent rain) the traps of my plant get pushed down towards the soil and they close catching some chunk of perlite or a mouthfull of peat moss and that traps usually dies shortly after. And we've been getting A LOT of rain. My plant was thriving at the start fo the year, but lately the poor thing has suffered a lot. Not sure what to do, As soon as I notice it starts storming I go out and bring her under shade.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Год назад
That's probably the best you can do, try to get them out if rain is in the forecast. I've had a few hard rains here this early summer, but nothing that really damaged traps. I did have to cover with a tarp real quick during a nasty hail storm. Luckily I was home when it hit. Growing outside has it's risks and these are just some of the things we have to try and maneuver around.

@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Год назад
Hello Betty, I wish it were that simple. Most of the time, you have to slowly introduce them to full sun. You can't just throw them in full sun. You must acclimate them to the harsh sun. Most of the places you buy a flytrap from are raised by grow lights. Which are much less powerful than the full sun. Start with a couple hours of sun a day, then move to shade. Do this for a week and increase the hours by 1 or 2 every week. Make sure they aren't burning. If they look okay, continue to increase sun exposure until they are in full sun. Then you can just leave them in the sun!

I like seeing people use tds meters and not have a clue what that number means. Mostly it’s in the aquarium community. It’s like watching someone pump up a tyre by pumping air into their mouth then trying to blow that through the valve. Think about being in a large room that’s a maze and it smells like someone has taken a dump in there. You don’t know if it’s a dump or a fart and there’s thousands of other things that make that smell which it can be and also be harmless. How do you know it’s a turd? Just throw it away but then don’t, it adds comical effect to people that know what it takes to identify the reading you get.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 6 месяцев назад
There is a good chance that it's being triggered by tannins or something similar. It's just as likely it's being triggered by harmful dissolved solids. Are you trying to sound really smart? I know it can be triggered by other things, especially when peat is mixed with the water. I like to play it better safe than sorry. Could be harmless, could be harmful. What's a way to guarantee it's not harmful. Flush. Cute comment, though, I guess. You might be trying too hard, though. I should also note your lack of helpfulness. Why attack someone when you apparently have infinite wisdom in a subject? Why not just share your knowledge? People can be so cruel and awful to each other. You could have offered a helpful tip or suggested a different way. But no, you stand on your high horse with your nose held high. You are right, you're just so much better than everyone. We all should bow to you're wisdom, oh mighty one.

@@CarnivorousPlantsHub what are you waffling about and what are you playing a victim for? I’m not expecting it so I have to ask is your comment somehow a projection? It’s funny seeing people use something they don’t know or misinterpret its use. I like it, carry on. Get over it. Try the last sentence for advice. Throw it away or……… What’s a number if you can’t distinguish what it is or whether it’s good or bad. See my point? It looks clever at a glance.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 6 месяцев назад
It's a number that either has no impact or has a negative impact. You can't deny that the reading could be something negative because it's just a number. You don't know which dissolved solid is triggering the meter. Therefore, I flush. I can get the meter to read at an acceptable level. Since rinsing my soil, I've seen a noticeable increase in my plants health. Is it possible it's just tanins? Sure. Is it possible I'm detecting and flushing harmful salts? Yep. Therefor I continue to do it. I'm not playing the victim, trust me, my skins way too thick for you to really bother me. I created this channel to help people. My goal is to assist people in growing healthy plants. I truly enjoy helping. When I see snide comments that aim to poke fun instead of just being helpful, it rubs me the wrong way. Like, your too good to offer advice or a helpful tip, so you will pad your own self securities by making fun of someone. It's just sad.. If you thought I was doing something wrong and can offer wisdom to assist, just do it. Stop trying to be witty and speak in silly riddles. Be better...
