Republic RF-84K Thunderflash | Behind the Wings
The Republic RF-84K is a reconnaissance variant of the RF-84 Thunderflash. Explore it's design, development, and role in Project FICON. It's time to go... Behind the Wings!
At Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum we have one of only three RF-84Ks left from the 25 built. Join Wings' curator Chuck Stout for an up-close look at this unique aircraft, and Wings' restorations volunteer Steve Groth to learn about the aircraft's restoration process. This one's going to be cool!

That is a FINE looking aircraft and my first introduction to the RF-84K. What a well-done piece, excellent narration and film work. Minnesotan here, and Ive been to the museum and its a great place. Ill stop in again when Im back in Denver because there's a lot to see and Id like to see this plane in person. I don't think it was on display when I was there a few years ago.

Great video! Chuck has a wonderful informative presentation style, and it's awesome you guys highlighted the hard work that Steve and the other restoration volunteers put into these aircraft. One of my favorite series and channels on youtube. Hope to visit in person one day!

I flew the RF-84/F from 1964 until 1971 in the 106th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, Alabama Air National Guard. It was affectionately known as the ground hog, or just the hog. That's because it was a bit under powered and had very long take off rolls. It 'loved' the ground. I had a helluva lot of fun in that bird.

Impressive restoration, especially the cockpit, can't imagine how much time went into hunting rare parts down

Another informative, interesting video on a (nowadays) mostly unknown aircraft. Every time I have visited the museum, the RF-84K is always one that I slow down and take a good long look at, since it is such a unique aircraft. Thanks for a great video!

The engineers of the Era were operating so far ahead of their time. This technology is now being revived with the X-61 Gremlins project to retrieve drones in midair.

Impressive restoration guess I'll drive down and have a look. Especially since you have a Mk7 as part of the display!

My college had the pre-production prototype of the RF-84K 51-1847, on the corner of our parade ground for a couple of decades. To us it was a generic USAF aircraft and it’s provenance was essentially unknown to us. Our AFROTC detachment would periodically dutifully wash the aircraft when it became too encrusted with oak tree debris. Returned to the custody of the USAF Museum in the mid80’s in favor of a combat veteran F-4 flown by an alumnus. Having been exposed to decades of Charleston, SC weather, and our less than skilled washing) 1847 was subsequently scrapped by the museum because of structural corrosion damage. Fortunately, the museum displays a pristine example of the RF-84K FICON program directly adjacent to the Museum’s signature B-36.

Italian Air Force still preverves a nice (and well restored) RF-84F "Thunderflash" in its Vigna di Valle Air and Space Museum (near Rome).

I live about 30 minutes away from the United States Air force Museum near Dayton Ohio. We go often. I would very much like to check this place out. It's so far away from Ohio.

Why couldn't the bomber take the pictures if it was in the enemy territory as well?
@Wings_Museum

The bombers flew higher altitude, and were slower moving making them easy targets for enemy attack

I would assume that the bombers halted right outside Soviet AA range, or would be too high for photos (or both? But I assume the former.) Get in fuel range of interest and then send the jet in to actually get close.
