She said she didn't come because her leg was hurting. She was actually in town at the hotel (according to her) but was in too much pain to come. All things considered, Re braved the segregation of Jim Crow and wearied many stagnant years at her first label, releasing album after album without any hits, and it wasn’t until her Atlantic debut (ten albums in) that she finally found the success she had worked so hard for-fast forward 20 years, she is firmly seated on her throne as the Queen of Soul, but her voice is beginning to lose some of its luster and suddenly this little girl she watched grow up becomes an overnight sensation, selling millions around the world and breaking records. Whitney was showered with accolades, even hailed by some as the next Aretha, and no doubt Aretha was aware of all this fanfare. I can understand how Re may have felt some kind of way about all this, but I think she may have let the media influence her attitude toward Whitney more than any personal interaction, and so when they met again in the studio, for the first time in years Aretha felt like she had something to prove, but for those of you who don’t know, Aretha’s voice ten years prior 1976 was every bit as pure-toned, resonant, and limber as the young Whitney, just listen to the Sparkle soundtrack.

Lamar Allen I have to interject here...I hear you on Aretha finally finding her stride and sound just as age and cigarettes began to rob her of her once great voice...I really hear you on that part and I do agree that in the 60’s and 70’s that Aretha’s voice was the ultimate but then came Whitney the next phase in vocal ability. Aretha was great but she was never equal to Whitney when Whitney was in her prime. Not even. PERIODT THU DONE & FINISHED.

@@marcusward6200 There’s no way anyone can listen to their respective catalogues side by side with an honest ear and not hear or acknowledge Aretha’s superiority, and that’s only in view of their recorded music. As far as live vocals are concerned, Whitney had a mighty mid-register belt and a supple head voice allowing for all those brilliant flourishes she often did, but Aretha had a far more sizable range in every register and though she may not have been as consistent with her delivery on account of her chain smoking, when she was on, no one was quite as brilliant, and to this day no other singer has sang with as much inventiveness, passion, or genius. I bear in mind that besides the records, our only frame of reference is RU-vid, but many of Aretha’s most brilliant live performances from the mid-late 70s (her true prime) aren’t even available online.
@marcusward6200
@marcusward6200 3 года назад
Lamar Allen I respect you in standing firm in your selection with regard to whom your favorite is and whom you have assessed as being the greatest. Aretha came along before RU-vid and I know many stunning performances went unrecorded but the fact still stands Whitney Elizabeth Houston is the standard all who came after her are trying to achieve. Whenever one wants to showcase their vocal abilities they don’t sing Aretha songs they TRY to duplicate Whitney’s “I Will Always Love You”, “Run to You”, “One Moment in Time” or “I Have Nothing.” No one is trying to detract from Aretha, her song “Angel” speaks to me deeply and I grew up listening to her I am 52 and Whitney came along when I was 16 back in 1984 and I am a singer and therefore know greatness of voice. You need only hear and watch the live 1989 Grammy Awards performance of “One Moment in Time” when this woman sings the line “if you seize that one moment in time! Make it shine!” and you can see that it was all over for everyone who came before her and they knew it because everyone from Little Richard to Barbara Mandrell to Andy Williams was in the house and they all knew what they had just witnessed...THE FUTURE!!! Point blank period! @@marcusward6200 I've studied under maestros who hold a doctorate in vocal pedagogy, I'm a student of classical voice performance at the New England Conservatory of Music, so I could go there if you want to go there. Whitney does it for you and that's fine; her voice was a technical marvel, but it's egregious and downright false to say people don't sing Aretha's songs to showcase their vocal abilities, have you ever watched American idol or the Voice?!? Jennifer Hudson auditioned with an Aretha song, Kelly Clarkson and Fantasia each sang songs made popular by Aretha in the competition, and the list goes on and on. The discourse surrounding the pantheon of American popular music's greatest singers is a never-ending tide of dissension that I won't entertain, but I'll rectify your above statement, considering Aretha's career predates and outlasts Whitney's, not to mention it was twice as prolific, Aretha, in fact, set the standard, and Whitney herself knew this. Vocally, everything Whitney did, Aretha did first and then some. She was among the first to change the paradigm of singing in popular music, and though Whitney's popularity prevails, Aretha is the blueprint, and those are simply facts.
@marcusward6200
@marcusward6200 3 года назад
Lamar Allen It is always a joy to encounter learned brothers of all races my friend and again you, as is everyone else, are entitled to your choice of who is greatest but that will never change the truth. Aretha was bested in the studio by a 22 year old Whitney Houston to the point of hanging back after Whitney left to re-record her parts of the recording showing that she knew she had been bested and that she was threatened by Whitney. I am glad to hear that you have studied under reputable and renowned tutelage but that will never change the fact that ability improves upon itself and that those who are able to learn from the greats often obtain what they the greats had and then go on to exceed their mentors. I wish it were possible for Whitney and Aretha to be about 26 to 28 years old at the same time. My money would be on Whitney Houston with full confidence that she would execute a breathtaking win. I loved Aretha as well and made it a point to state this fact in previous comments but when you do an objective analysis of vocal skill Whitney wins period. Kings and Queens have stated that Whitney Houston was “the greatest singer of our ERA” (Prince Albert of Monaco) Sir! A scholar far exceeding your pedigree stated: “If voices were instruments then Whitney Houston’s would be a Stradivarius.” Aretha was great but Whitney was greater and that’s just the way it is. I am not here to engage in verbal acrobatics which I easily could nor am I here to inflame others via opposition. Her Royal Vocal Highness The Queen, Whitney Elizabeth Houston is the iridium standard by which all are now being measured. Now that she is gone the new breath takers, In my opinion, are: KeKe Wyatt, Kelly Price, Jennifer Hudson, Nikki Ross and Tarralyn Ramsey. Peace be unto you and yours.

Some Aretha fans won't like this, but it is my belief that Aretha probably cared for Willie but she had little respect for him. After all, he was on her payroll. He did her bidding. He carried her slop jar (so to speak), he opened doors for her. He put her wardrobe in the car, etc. Meanwhile, Aretha was used to the kind of man, who treated her like crap. On some level, she seemed to be more smitten with a guy who didn't try very hard to please her. That song, "It Isn't It Wasn't..." is one of the worst songs ever committed to digital media, cassette, CD or plastic black vinyl.

It sounds like Aretha had become overwhelmed by deaths and was depressed. She wasn’t making good choices and she seemed like she didn’t have friends because of this

I always appreciate the way Whitney Houston ❤ embraced our generation and took on Brandy and Monica as little sisters and other artists. Whitney was probably totally different because she experienced Aretha Franklin being as Ass...I neverrrrr really felt Aretha Franklin like I did Patti Labelle or Gladys Knight this book is showing she was the jerk I thought she was fortunate enough for Whitney Houston she got to see a Hater and didn't let that change her. Aretha Franklin got mad at Beyonce because she called Tina Turner the Queen...Ree everyone didn't have to bow down to you...People put her upthere by the time the 80's came she was okay but as a child I didn't like her Patti was my favorite...I wonder how she is going to look in this Movie

It just kills me when these comments and conclusions are made about people that one doesn't know personally. Just what they've read or "heard". But I guess the tabloid mentality is part and parcel of being in show biz. As the saying goes, "all publicity is good publicity". People live in Disneyland, I swear.

When you said Benny Hill, straight flashbacks 🙌🏾. Having a remote used to be a luxury. I had sit next to the tv to flip between Falcon Crest and Dynasty. Now I got 12 remotes and haven't seen a commercial in 5 years. But it's not as fun.

Whitney mother sang with Aretha in 1960s, they were friends and Aretha let Sissy sing backup for her alot. When people are gone that give people the chance to tell so many lies and the person they talking about they can't defend themselves, their are some awful people in this world.

I think the reason people ask a person that usually says no is to be polite & because that no could turn into a yes. Just like kids & when we were kids we ask until that no turns into a yes.👍 And yes PBS is still around they have roughly 350 member buildings around the nation. And i still look at the throwback PBS & Weta sometimes. Lol😂 Be Safe Everyone🌎😷
