Rescoring LSU's Controversial 198.475 Meet

LSU gymnastics set a new program-high score of 198.475 on February 2, 2024 vs. Arkansas. Many of the routines that received either a 9.975 or a 10.0 sparked outrage from gymnastics fans because of the obvious errors in the routines. I will be rescoring every routine from this competition to see if LSU was actually overscored by a large margin.
Disclaimer: Overscoring is rampant in NCAA gymnastics currently and is not solely occurring at LSU. I chose to restore this meet because of the amount of discourse it sparked. These gymnasts do not deserve any hate because of how the judges chose to score their routines. I am also not a trained judge and am simply making the deductions I believe should be made. Judging is subjective and I am sure some people would have judged more/less harshly when judging these routines for themselves.

bro and haleigh bryant on literally every event except maybe bars. it's obvious there's a hop on vault and she falls out of the landing. on beam there's a clear .1 wobble and obvious even in real time her legs were super crossed. the foot slide on floor is also extremely obvious too

I think there were few factors that made this meet especially egregious. 1. The fact the judges showed they knew how to take deductions with Ark (up until Beam) so they were blatantly using approach with the home team. 2. There is a level of forgiveness in typical NCAA judging, like flexed feet on beam series and direction on vault are not frequently taken for top 20 teams but thus meet was blatant landing deductions and beam wobbles that ignored... at that point why are scoring at all!

@taylorburtis A few lsu meets this year, the judges were super hard on us for vault and bars, then ridiculously lax on beam and floor. It's frustrating! We have a solid team this year, just score us consistently according to content and execution! We'd still be doing well without the gifts. I guess we will see what happens at the SEC championship. Since those should be SEC judges from all over the conference (preferably without any bias). I'm excited we continue to have so many talented teams in the SEC! I watched the match and I agree LSU was overscored. Flexed feet, leg separations, crossed feet, and flawed landings seemed not to be scored. I saw flaws on both teams. Even with the differences on scoring, LSU still would have won. We do have to remember that we are seeing the match through the camera's eye, whereas the judges have to score it without benefit of replay. There were a hack of a lot of handstand issues that went unscored.

I like this video because it points out what is going wrong in NCAA at a great example of many overscored meets. I agree with everything in this video. LSU is not the only team that is consistently overscored but no other team has such an obvious homescoring advantage. but one question is still open for me: on bars you are allowed to be 10 degrees of vertical on handstands and pirouettes. i saw a lot of half turns on the high bar that definitely didnt finish within 10 degrees from vertical. shouldnt that be a deduction everytime?
@abn428
@abn428 2 месяца назад
There's a terrible lack of consistency in judging for NCAA meets. I know the judges feel rushed, but I'd prefer them do it old school and mark down every deduction from the starting value. And, I'd like us to see this information in real time when watching the meet. Other sports give information as plays go, why can't gymnastics? Part of me feels like if there was transparency, the judges would be more careful/conservative in all scoring. Judges are only human, so mistakes will happen but the NCAA is riddled with wild swings in scoring. What can be done?

My frustration with videos like these is you are slowing down videos and hyper-critiquing the gymnastics being done, but at what purpose? I 100% agree LSU was overscored, but it doesn’t take this to display that. 1) Judges see the gymnastics in real-time so errors get missed. 2) If the scoring is consistent amongst both teams, what is the problem? Ethical… no, but sports like these are subjective to what the judges witness. THATS ALWAYS HOW THEY’VE BEEN. Which there were multiple Arkansas routines that were also highly overscored. 3) This, at the end of the day, serves as a forum for hate. Very few people are in the comments supporting LSU and while it might not be intended hateful towards the gymnasts, see how a video slow-mo critiquing their gymnastics can feel pointed? In reality, LSU performed very well and put down a great meet. It’s just sad to see that undermined because of a score they couldn’t even control. Disclaimer or not, no judge is gonna see this and change their ways. Write a letter to the NCAA if it bothers you that much. Im sure you would spend less time doing that then you did editing this video, and probably get more out of it.

It’s almost irresponsible of u to do a video of judging bias controversy and not mention Oklahoma scores. One badly scored meet from LSU doesn’t compare to a decades worth of overscoring for OU. I notice people turn a blind eye towards OU but it still remains a hot topic for fans and there’s lots of real controversy surrounding that team. Foe goodness sake LSU has not never even won a championship after going defeated during regular season yrs ago so they get one inflated score that won’t mean anything postseason and will be dropped out of their calculations when NQS starts so is this real that controversial?? I want to be clear I don’t believe there is a racial component at play but I did see it suggested the reason OU gets away with it is cuz there are the least diverse team in the top 10 and the judges appreciate that. It’s horrible to ever have that out there as a suggestion but it’s out there- again I don’t believe this to be true but there is obviously a bias there and it needs to be eliminated.

There are certain programs that succeed on reputation and the belief that "they are the best," so their scores must reflect it.
