A boy's lifejacket catches in a boat's propeller, trapping him underwater. This segment was part of Episode 609, a women heroes themed episode, which aired November 22, 1994 on CBS. This particular version of the segment was recorded after the Family Channel starting cutting episodes to make room for commercials, so it may have small parts missing.

I’m the Mom We owed everyone and I mean everyone a heartfelt thank you. Filming it a year later we got to meet and personally hug and thank everyone for their efforts to save Mark. It was a miracle. One link in that chain to save him would of had a very different outcome. They were all so happy to see him running around. They said validated that what they do is so important !!! Mark is 34 a software engineer. He’s 6 ft 3 inches tall. He’s a very happy fella and has many friends and interests

We had never rented a boat. And never have since. So we were novices. Thank God they told us the children had to wear a life vest always on the boat. Water was 100 ft deep where it happened. There was no sign on boat about sitting up front plus the engine propellor had no cage over it. Those were safely features years after 1993. We passed on suing the boat owner. It was our fault non intentional. We accepted the blame but as the State boat patrolman Mike told my husband that day it wasn’t his fault as he thought he should of caught him before he fell off. It was an accident !!!

What an incredible story, how lovely to hear that Mark is doing well now! These things can happen in the blink of an eye, nobody is to blame, it was simply a freak accident. But I bet it has stayed with you and your family ever since! All the best.

So glad to hear he’s doing well! Really nice when people who are the subjects of these stories visit the comment sections and chime in; Well it’s usually a nice occasion. Are you still in touch with those who had a part in his rescue? Also, I’ve always been curious as to how “rescue 911“ selected their stories. Did you guys submit yours? Did someone else? Were you hesitant at all to tell your story when they contacted you? This was my favorite show as a kid. It never should’ve been canceled!

I don’t mean to criticize these folks because accidents do happen, but this one to me is just a major lack of common sense. To sit on the front edge at 6 years old and not even be holding him, where he could obviously fall and get sucked back through the opening to the motor, which is exactly what happened, is just ludicrous to me. How common sense was not present. All that aside I’m glad that these parents didn’t pay the ultimate price for their lack of sense.

As a former speed boat owner I couldn't agree more. Why would mom recommend the child leave a safe position on that pontoon for a dangerous one?

Mom says the line about sitting next to daddy & it just makes me think back to like 3 aka ago visiting my dads house, boating on the lake in this type of boat, him telling me how’s there been multiple deaths and injuries this summer alone from sitting up there. geeze louise... Nowadays there are signs posted all over these types of boats telling you not to sit there while in motion. I wonder if they had signs back then (that ppl just ignored also)

Today marks 26 years since this happened so Mark is 32 now. He must've been in a bad situation being trapped underwater with his life jacket caught on the boat propeller. That was frightening. Women can help in emergencies too. In fact everyone can, even kids. Shelley deserves most of the credit. If she didn’t help, I don’t think Mark would be here today. I’m sure Mark can never thank Shelley enough for what she did to help him.

OMG. This is what happened to my sister; she got trapped underwater in a warm environment for more than 3 minutes. She didn't return without noticeable & severe brain injury bc of anoxia. (A loss of oxygen created by a trauma.) This happened over 30 years ago & she's never recovered from the loss of oxygen.

My late husband and I decided to go to whiskeytown lake (30 min from home) taking our daughters 11 and 14 yrs old.,I packed a picnic and we were all fishing off the back of our pontoon boat having fun..my youngest daughter went to the front of the boat outside the gate of the boat to fish off the patio area.. She leaned over too far and fell in,,I was hysterical..I knew the boat was on top of her but thankfully it was a pontoon boat plus the outboard motor was off as we were using the trolling motor to fish,.I saw her hand reaching out of the water and I yanked her out of the water like she was a feather, still screaming..thankfully she wasn't injured..whew!..

The motor has a hydraulic lift on it it that raises and lowers the engine. As soon as he fell in the water the motor could've been raised and they wouldn't have to go through all of that

1993 no lift you had to raise by hand.

With that type of boat it's not safe to sit infront, because if you fall you going under the boat to the propeller.

@@judyevenson5467 @Darren Doyle My copy of the episode is a re-run from the Family Channel and was edited for running time, so his interview was cut out. The version currently available on Pluto TV includes his interview at the end of the segment (scroll down to S1E349): pluto.tv/en/search/details/series/rescue-911/season/1

At the time this happened, I was two weeks away from my 11th birthday and my brother was 8 3/4. It has been two months since we moved to Charlotte, North Carolina from Fountain Hills, Arizona. It was going to be my first birthday in Charlotte North Carolina. If I was present at the time this happened, it wouldn’t have been a great early birthday present.
