@@lucaszylka9607 I think when you say "Alpha", it sounds like you support establishing dominance (i.e forcing the dog on their side etc.). You don't need to be an alpha, not that kind, instead be a LEADER that your dog respects. :) Dog are such great animals and I used to believe the dominance thing but I have learned more and my relationship with my Heeler has become so much better after researching new tricks and methods.

Really solid owner, it's difficult to know when to correct your dog for just not listening. After dealing with reactivity, it feels like "well they aren't reacting so I really don't need to correct them." Good obedience on that boy, and another solid video from you, Tom! Love to see that notification.

This was FANTASTIC! Great to see how to reintroduce tools effectively (when they hadn't been previously) and how to correct a dog who "comes up the leash." The owners had really good questions and of course Tom answered them in a way that the owner, and the viewers, could understand!

You ROCK! You actually changed her mind on the use of a tool by showing her how to properly use it!!! Bravo Tom. You can have a hammer but without knowing how to use it you can get hurt...now SHE has confidence and the dog picks up on her calm confident energy. Woohoo this was a GREAT video!

My dog is literally like this dog. I started with a slip and then halt and he did the same thing just push right through and was willing to hurt himself to right for what he wanted.I finally switched to a herm sprenger 2.25 and it was an instant change. I've also been doing this with a local trainer that has given me some of the same advice Tom did here. Obedience is the key to everything, I've noticed how much more my dog starts to actually listen to me now when I've instilled obedience and also giving correction when he doesn't listen when he knows what I'm asking but doesn't want to do it. It's along process as he's been allowed to do what he wants for years with no consequences but I see the finish line.

I am amazed how the handler is the problem and makes the dog insecure. Your energy makes a world of difference and it flows right down the leash. Great video. Thanks Tom
@glenj.taylor2938
@glenj.taylor2938 2 года назад
Unfortunately, the "handler" is more often the issue in the equation. "No Bad Dogs" subtly states that if the dog is having issues, there is a root cause and it's not the dog. Just like Cesar Milan says, "I rehabilitate dogs, I train people." It's not that the owners are bad either, they're just not very knowledgeable of Dog/Human behavior. Dog or Human, the psychology is linked more than most people know.

The Gentle Leader should NOT be used on a reactive dog. Years ago, on the advice of a trainer I used a Gentle Leader on my 7 month old, large breed puppy. While it did what it was supposed to do, helped me control him when he lunged forward, it was also wrenching his neck so severely that he's been getting chiropractic adjustments for over 9 years. He now has intervertebral disc disease in his neck and lower back!

@bunker123sugar

@@lyonmackenzie10 I think a prong collar that fits properly is your best bet. A gentle leader doesn't teach your dog anything, while a prong, used correctly, will

I agree I used a gentle leader and my dog was so reactive around other dogs she muscles through it and caused injury to her nose area. I was so upset at myself. She is sooooo good at home but outside she is a completely different dog. I didn't want to use a prong collar but she had to be conditioned to not react to EVERYTHING....

LOVED this one! Here's a dog who actually has the foundation of obedience, but is still out of control. Too bad such a conscientious dog owner was given bad direction from previous trainers. This was a great exercise in reading your dog and making appropriate small corrections that have such a big impact on the outcome. Kudos to the owner who took your direction on the nuances of this dog's behavior so well. I'll be in the UK on October 1 and am itching to audit your class. Don't think the person I'm traveling with is as eager as I am to watch this stuff.

We felt the same about the e- collar, were very nervous using it,our dog worked well with the trainer and he worked with us and still we couldn't get it right, kane actually turned around and bit my husband on the leg, as soon as he did it he dropped to the ground and felt horrible, even ignoring the dog that he was reacting to so we stuck to the prang collar. That was 2 years ago and he has come a long way Really appreciated this video the owner is amazing, wishing her all the best

My cousin would love your help if she could afford it! I told her to watch your videos at least! She saved a golden retriever from a bad breeder who came into the clinic she worked at and said if they couldn’t fix his deformed leg he’d just put it down himself. He had many other issues, such as his organs all being pushed into his chest cavity. He’s already had a couple surgeries and needs another major one and despite a gofundme and small discounts from the vet she is still having to try to sell her car to try to help pay for things. He’s having some behavioral issues and she’s kind of stuck. So hopefully she’ll check your videos out at least. Well done as always! ☺️

It took me 2 years to decide it was time to look for a new companion so I went to the Womans Shelter and found a Catahoula Lab mix so I feel for this family. The Catahoula breed is hardy as heck and will dominate if you dont let them work all that energy out. Mine is about 5 months old atm and she is a handful. Good luck, lots of walks, corrections and love.

16:07 Reminded of us taking our young GSD to a dog reactive class a few years ago. Since I was relaxed, our GSD just slept through the class while the other dogs yapped their poor minds out. The trainer tried treats, screening, and everything except corrections to help the other owners. The training place didn't even allow slip collars! I had quietly used one prior to entering the facility to "tune-up" our dog. After watching Tom's videos, I now know what caused the occasional leash reactivity we had experienced and why we never saw it during the class. Thank you Tom for helping us understand our dog better and make our relationship so much happier! The video showed what can happen with the right training.

Our English mastiff will give you a ARRRRGAROOOOFFFF to tell you to get out of his yard if he doesn’t know you. But if he’s on a leash she’s quiet and will flop over for anyone. He loves kids, he loves neighbors, but if you sneak up on our yard he will get grumpy. If he sees someone he will alert, come over to the kids and the kids will say friend. We live in a rural area with a lot of creeps around so this behavior is accepted by all our neighbors and Kitty knows all our neighbors.
