John, you nailed it brother... 👏 "this is a one way Covenant, where I will love you regardless of circumstances". Holy literally means different. To be set apart. Theres a reason why that is the word used by the seraphim to describe what they see as the fly circling around the Most High. There is none like Him. So in a sense, you're saying "let's make our marriage holy, different, set apart, something that brings honor and reflects the Most High.

It shouldn't be "Happy wife, happy life." it should be "Happy spouse, happy house" and in that statement its not dependent on the other spouse to provide that full happiness. That is on each of us individually. Your spouse can add to the happiness but not the cornerstone.

I found an exception You can change everything and go to al the marriage counseling, can't please a bipolar spouse, that was abused as a child, with a mother in law pushing for divorce, and then misery for her daughter and grandkids. When the VA counselor tells you "next time she will send you to the morgue, not the emergency room" you then succumb to her demands for divorce.

You have hit on so many of the issues my wife and I have had during our 50 year relationship. (We were 16 when we met.) One of the most important things we have found is when we don't have joy in God, ourselves, each other, our family, that's when our marriage does not work well. Seldom do we feel joy in all those categories at the same time. But, when we cannot find joy in any these, we have had to rethink how we are living our lives. Everything changes and, to keep our marriage healthy, we have changed to maintain our own identities while growing our love and respect for each other.

Awesome discussion! It is so true marriage is difficult but so worth it! My first marriage was 20years too long😳 Now, my second marriage 10years strong. You have to realize your spouse is not you and you have to allow them to be themselves. Work on yourself and love them through their faults (unless there is abuse). Happiness comes from within and then you share it with the one you love❤❤

To the "this is hard" (24:54) I remind my daughter that it's triple reinforced when we play that game. We thought it, said it and heard it from a voice we trust implicitly. This gives the defeatist attitude significant strength when we didn't have to make that choice. There are times to use this loop in a positive way to our advantage. Finding a ways to prop ourselves up in the face of adversity and challenge is vital in many aspects of a life that strives and thrives irrespective of circumstances.

I've grown up around twisted expectations/perspectives regarding marriage, and seeing failed marriages all around me (including my own parents') really made me question whether it's even a "smart" option these days. After growing a bit, I'm quite convinced that marriage, with the right partner, is a beautiful thing to pursue and fight for. Thank you gentlemen, looking forward to the content to come! From a woman, I SO appreciate your comment on "happy wife, happy life". I'm so sick of hearing that. It really denigrates your wife and relationship, as well as all the things you've mentioned. Thank you!

Idk how I haven’t found warrior poet sooner. I’m on RU-vid all the time. This is the best channel I have ever found. Period. John’s book is amazing.

Been married for a decade. You're right. It is a battle, especially after you have kids. But it's worth fighting for.

THANK YOU for publicly stating what my own mind, heart, and soul believe. It is a rare and refreshing change from our selfish and materialistic culture. As someone "in the trenches of struggle" myself, your encouragement is a needed shot in the arm to help guys like me persevere and to keep the faith, continuously moving forward with the Lord at my side. Please pray for so many couples in the same boat and that both husbands and wives may avoid the hardness of heart that destroys. God bless!

I just would like to say thank you John! You are a true person , not afraid to show the personal side. It is so true that Marriage is a work in progress. Thankfully God put a woman in my path that showed me how to work at it I had everything pinned up after I got back home because that is what I seen my dad do after his tours. But she breached my perimeter and has loved me and challenged me and I her. In this crazy world it is always good to hear your words we both watch you and love it when Mrs. Poet accompanies you. Stay safe Brother and thank you again.

There is a difference between ditching your friends and growing apart from your friends. They both hurt but the only thing promised is change. Thank you for the solid content gentleman!

Don’t take this the wrong way, I love these two men. So much knowledge dropping here I am watching twice. Happiness vs Fulfillment. I remember telling my wife a few times, remember you are an individual first, fulfillment is the goal. We aim to make each other the best versions of ourselves.

Wow. I am reading all the comments about how hard marriage is. I just thanked God that my marriage has NOT been hard or a challenge or a struggle. We have had 2 arguments in 24 years. We are both Christians, we competed in Bodybuilding, shoot guns (she is a firearms instructor) go fishing, watch horror movies and have fun. She makes my life EASIER, not harder. I waited until I was 31 and found a fit, ranch girl, who liked the outdoors and didn’t want kids. She is with me because she chooses to be. She has a PhD in mathematics and is a professor at a local university here in Montana. I called her and thanked her for being the way she is after watching this video. She is a big fan of the Warrior Poet and told her to see what you guys are discussing in the video today. She is a logical female, not driven be emotional crap like most women. I can count on her.

You guys nailed it. I’ve been married going on 13 years and my wife and I have stumbled through every single one of the issues you talked about. Immaturity, naïvety, and unrealistic/ undiscussed expectations lead to disaster. We separated for several months several years back but chose to slug it out for the exact reasons you talked about. We made a covenant and so we had to work it out. Today, my wife and I are doing so much better. It took lots of long, hard, tear filled conversations as well as a healthy dose of counseling to get to where we are. We still have a ways to go but we are unified in purpose and in our matured love for one another so I know we will get there. We challenge each other in ways that help us grow as individuals, as a couple, and as parents to get to be the best version of us that we can be. Thanks for this guys. I really hope that your words can help folks be better together and have a healthier and more mature outlook on what a successful marriage really takes.
