Cymbidiums are so incredible, personally I feel nowadays they’re very underrated. That is an incredible specimen and you did a wonderful job resurrecting her! They’re especially not popular anymore here in the States which is a shame because they really are incredible looking, I’m going to have to get one for myself and hopefully have them live long enough for my grandkids to get someday!

Oh that's a shame! They are a very popular potted plant here.

Great story behind that cymbidium😌🤲💞I gave a trial of three cymbidiums here in Japan with our -8℃ Winters, yet very dry here in Winter, they sit outdoors in an area with a big eave from the roof where they experienced all that cold minus the frost thanks to the eave. They got no damage at all, so surprising! The only problem was that they tried to set buds in November and they all died and then they re-set their buds to finally flower in our month of May😉🤲💞

Amazing coincidence, I gifted exactly the same orchid to my late mother in the late 1960's IIRC it was labelled "Large White", I've never been able to find its correct name. hopefully one of the followers might be able to shed some light on this. I brought it as a gift for mothers' birthday, orchids were relatively unknown in our region in the 60's and this one was specially ordered although the order was placed as an orchid, I had no idea at that time that were different types etc. The orchid still exists in my collection, with the distinction of being the oldest in the collection. It has been divided many times over the past 40+ years with bulbs and back bulbs distributed around the town to friends every few years. It still blooms every year religiously with little maintenance. Highly recommended if you can find a bulb....

Hello Matthew, i am your new subscriber from austria. Lovely Story! My first Cymbidium i found years ago in Vienna by a window on the street only with a letter on it " who wants me?". My first thought was, what is it? hmmm... a lily or...maybe an orchid? I went back and took it! She is still alive, never bloomed because of the warm temperatures in my flat. BUT now, i live in a middleage house so yesterday evening i brought her down to the coolest area by a window without heating. In all my books i never found good advices to keep them, i read about to hold them warm in the day and cool in the night but i never could offer her that in vienna. Also i found nothing about the back bulbs to build new plants...How ever: Next days i will bring her to my roof if the temperatures in the night allow that. My hope is now bigger bring her to bloom again after more than 10 yrs. and it will be a big surprise because i don't know what colour it will be. Thank you so much for your informative nice videos. Glad i found you now! Best regards, Andrea

Hi Mathew. I think cymbidiums are amazing in that they can survive neglect and somehow bounce back just like yours has. I have a lovely dark pink/red one which my mother bought me for my 50th birthday (I’m now 75) and as I’m a stickler for correct labelling I kept transferring the dates of repots as the labels started to deteriorate, so my guess is that my plant would be close to 30 years old and has been chopped up a few times. I’ve grown a few from old back bulbs which I pretty well just left in an empty pot and they grew new plants, that’s amazing too, in my opinion. There are often so many lovely sentimental stories attached to orchids. My cymbidium will be passed down to my daughter who I hope won’t kill it and then pass it on to my granddaughter. Pity I won’t be around to see that happen.

Absolutely lovely story😍. While living in Pennsylvania in 2002, I purchased a cymbidium, in bloom. It never rebloomed for me while living there. In 2005, we moved to FL where it has bloomed every single year. It became so huge that, 2 years ago I divided it in 3 sections. Gave 1 to a friend and kept 2. Last year, each gave me one spike and, this year, they both have 2 spikes. Not quite as old as yours but mine is almost 21 year old😉
