Rescuing a GIANT RED APE

This week I tackle an Old World model, Scyla Anifgrimm. He's a big red ape that has been enslaved (or some such) by Khorne, and now he wanders around hitting people with his big red fists. No matter what the actual lore is behind this mode, he looks rad, and I must paint him! The good news is that I found him on ebay for $20 and that right there was enough for me to pick him up and paint him for the channel. I hope you enjoyed this video, if you did, please consider liking, sharing, and subscribing for more eBay Miniature rescues!

Instead of skipping a week you should just break the tutorial into multiple segments. It's better for you since you have less videos to plan and worry about for a while and can get a solid few weeks of steady uploads while you plan other models on the side. IDK, that's what I would do, gets folks to watch more then one video as well for the algorithm.
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 года назад
Might end up doing that, it really depends on how the week goes and how much I can get done during the time I have to work. Could be that things just go well and I get it done in a week lol. We’ll see how it goes :)

What I like to do with my lava bases is paint the color on, then when it dries put a layer of elmers glue on top of that and let it dry. Then I put down a thick layer of Mordant Earth and get these nice big cracks on the base and it's already black. So all I have to do is dry brush some highlights on it.

I heard that when GW switched to Finecast, they just switched all their metal production equipment over to resin instead of investing in proper resin gear, which is why their quality was so much worse than FW and pretty much every other manufacturer out there.
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 года назад
Yeah I’ve heard that too, they just used the pewter molds and put the finecast resin in. It’s definitely noticeable considering how many companies make great resin models these days. Apparently it saved them a ton of money though, might be why they make such nice plastic kits these days, hard to say really, but I always wonder about that stuff from a business standpoint.
@bleddyntitmuss6008

They did that originally. They've now 'revamped' the system, and have actual resin molds, which means there're less imperfections, but it's by no means close to plastic.

If you’re looking for a cool paint scheme you can google knight houses and read up on some lore (no knight house has more than 3 paragraphs unless it’s been added to recently). Nice job as always! A real shame the base didn't go to plan, as I thought that was a really cool concept. Finecast really is a nightmare to work with. About the only good thing about it was initially when GW started using it, they were sending out a ton of miscast minis, but if you queried it they sent you another one. If you had some hobby know-how, you could fix up the bad cast one and end up with 2 of the mini's for the price of one (or even 3 as a friend of mine did). You still ended up with miniatures that felt like one of those cheap plastic dinosaur toys you get at dollar stores, only with worse detailing, but it was some recompense at least. Makes me wonder how many of those bad casts made their way to poor unsuspecting buyers on eBay though...
@eBayMiniatureRescues

I have to imagine there are a ton of miscast or poorly detailed minis out on eBay. I try and look as close as I can in whatever pictures are provided, but it’s hard to tell sometimes. So far, this one has been the worst one I’ve gotten, and it could have been waaay worse. I’ve heard forge world still sends replacements if you get a bad one. There have been some great suggestions on how to do the base, hopefully another opportunity will come up to try again, I do have a half painted fyreslayers army that could use some nice lava bases :)

I’ve used that before, it works about the same as LAs totally awesome. Soaking or in the sonic cleaner. The thing that makes the difference for me is that LAs totally awesome is $1 a bottle at pretty much all of the dollar stores in the US. Occasionally the dollar stores also sell it in gallon jugs too, also for $1. So I try and stock up when they do. Otherwise, if you can get it for a good price then purple super clean will work all day long :)

The molds for finecast were not well designed nor thought out. The massive number of injection points or gates degrades areas of fine detail, in particular hair on many of their classic sculpts. Forgeworld has a one gate injection approach however mold slips and air bubbles are still fairly common. Leakycheese did a great video analysis looking at all the Forgeworld products he’s purchased and breaking down by percentage how many had defects and to what degree of severity. Personally I find Forgeworld much more forgiving to work with than finecast. That said working with these two resin products are not for the faint of heart. You will get quite familiar with using Miliput or your putty of choice and sand paper. Thanks for the video, and congrats on the great finds on eBay. I’m not as familiar with knight houses as I am with Titan Legios so I would suggest looking up using your own family crest and making up your own color scheme that matches. I recall you mentioning that some of your family was English so it would be a great way to really personalize the project.
@Warlock572
@Warlock572 4 года назад
The molds for finecast weren't designed or thought out at all. They reused the molds for the original pewter miniatures. That is why there were/are so many issues. While the resin they use behaves much like melted white metal, it obviously has some differences. The switch to the cheap resin was simply a way for GW to lower their costs on producing and shipping those minis (making new molds and shipping metal minis in bulk is very expensive) and increase their profit. The fact that they can afford to replace one several times at no additional cost to the buyer shows how successful that move was for them.
@eBayMiniatureRescues

That makes a lot of sense, I’ll have to check that video out as well, thanks for the recommendation! Using my family crest is a cool idea! There’s a lot of history there, could be fun to capture that on a mini. Gonna have to think about that :)

@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 года назад
A love hate relationship is probably the best way to put it. Some of the sculpts they put out are great, but the work to get them even ready to paint can be so over the top. The stencil thing is pretty great when the opportunity comes up, I used a slaanesh one on that noise marine I did a while back, same idea as this. Using them definitely elevated the model and makes it look like there’s some freehand stuff going on. I plan on using stencils quite a lot for the knight...hopefully to greater effect, I’m stoked about it, we’ll see how it goes though lol.

Then the mini would look like it used to be painted black but heat from the knight is cracking the paint on the armour, would make it look like some kind of chaos knight or a free blade. That part at the beginning of the video where you talked about how you strip your models was really useful thanks! I’ve had a group of 5 tomb kings necropolis knights and the person before me absolutely filled the details with paint and I think your advise has saved them from eternal clog. Keep the great videos coming!

If finding him for 20,- is the good news, what's the bad news? I gotta say you always do Khorne well. As for the titan, Slaanesh obviously, maybe tie him to your noise marine? They're already standing next to each other.

Haha, true, I suppose the bad news was that he was caked in paint, still not really that bad though. Slaanesh could be interesting! I did enjoy that noise marine project quite a bit. We’ll see :)

For your Knight you could do that in a couple of ways. A) Try to break it down into sections and work on one each week. Spreading out the process, but still creating content at the same time. Downside some viewers may get bored of this if it goes on week after week for too long. B) Set aside some time each week to work on the knight while still working on a normal project for that week. Then as you finish each section on the Knight, you can edit the footage and release it or wait till you're totally finished and release it as a single video. Personally I would go with option B and then released a video of the Knight as each section is finished the following week while still keeping the same schedule. I would do that so I would have extra videos in the "can" to release. This way should I want a break/vacation I would have videos to read to release which on that or if I was to become ill and not able to make a video for a week or two I would still have videos to fall back on. Well just some ideas.

Awesome videos as always. Quick question - the intro music, is that available to purchase/download somewhere? It's good!
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 года назад
I'm not sure if it is, the intro track is called Slow Energy by Young Rich Pixies. I get my music from Artlist.io and Epidemic Sound, so it's a little bit hit or miss when it comes to the music being on normal platforms. Every so often I will see one of the artists on Soundcloud, but rarely on things like Spotify or iTunes.

Back in the late 80's or early 90's there was a artist working for Games Workshop called Wayne England who made up his own Adeptus Titanicus force called War Gryphons. The paint scheme looked awesome. Been trying to find a better picture, but this is what I found so far. images.app.goo.gl/vQYWGTMu2im4vJSg6

i tend to find methylated spirits is more effective for resin minis without causing any damage to them

Haven’t tried methylated spirits yet, might have to try it for the tough to get paints.
@SparksNZeros
@SparksNZeros 4 года назад
@@eBayMiniatureRescues finecast and some of the paler forgeworld resins are horrendous to strip as they are porous, pretty much any liquid you use to strip them causes the models to swell. sharper edges and points just burst and flake off or leave a rounded edge. i've succesfully stripped both using methylated spirits which isnt absorbed as quickly but you still need to leave the mini in sand or silica gel beads so that the mini won't shrink later and leave a cracked surface (that and things like horns and blades will reharden).

does paint ever interfere with the adhesion from the plastic glue??
@fabianschwarz3219
@fabianschwarz3219 4 года назад
Plastic glue melts the two parts together so when the glue is dry it wont come off If you paint first you get in trouble with guey paint/glue stuff

@gregwilkinson8127 4 года назад
@@fabianschwarz3219 cool beans, thanks for the response, I was curious cuz I see people do it sometimes(like they paint when the area is more accessible and then glue it together) but I often find they get a bit of overspray or whatnot into the area where the glue will be going, it kind of seemed like it wouldn't be a great thing to do, was curious how negative the repercussions would be so thanks for letting me know!!

I have to ask how you keep your brushes from splitting?
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 года назад
I use sable hair brushes, the quality really helps keep them from going bad as fast like GW or army painter brushes. As well as regular cleaning with ‘the masters’ brush cleaner. It gets all the paint out of the bristles and keeps them from splitting. Very useful stuff for keeping your brushes, of any brand, good for a lot longer :)
@MrAnihillator
@MrAnihillator 4 года назад
@@eBayMiniatureRescues Thank you. Just brought some from army painter brushes and they already split.
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 года назад
I’ve had a handful of army painter brushes that worked for a long time with regular cleaning. The regiment brush in particular wasn’t half bad, but I do feel like army painter is hit or miss with quality sometimes. Just try not to get paint past 3/4 up the bristles and clean them as often as you can. They should hold their tips a little better that way and hopefully last you a while longer before having to get new ones.

The concentrated refill is exactly what you want! If you dilute it then it won’t work very well for stripping that paint off. So no worries, you got the right stuff :)

The last time they did that they let everyone know, I haven’t seen anything lately about that, but I could have missed the notification.
