Walmart shouldn't sell anything with a heartbeat

I got myself kicked out of a Walmart years ago for opening a water treatment bottle and using their sink to fill the betta cups. They were literally on their sides in hardly any water. I was asked to never return. Thank you for saving these guys!

Whenever you find a Walmart doing this call corporate they will do something about it. I called twice and they ended up closing down and removing all the fish. Thank you for saving them!

I think we should start a petition that Walmart or any big name brands as such. SHOULD NOT sell any live fish!

This is so heartbreaking...they are literally living in tiny cups with nothing around them, rotting there. Every life matters, even the smallest ones.

I’m so glad my local Walmart stopped selling live fish for the same reason they never took care of them. It was always heartbreaking seeing them unhealthy, dead ones floating, swimming in dirty water, and something I won’t ever forget was how some of the fishes had both eyes missing meaning that they were starved to the point they resorted to cannibalism. That already was proof they weren’t feeding them where the poor fishes having no option but to go to that extreme. Bless people like you and many others for rescuing these beautiful creatures!

This reminds me of the time that I tried to do the same with a betta from my local petco. The bettas there ALWAYS look incredibly sick, are listless and dying. This one poor male betta looked on the verge of death, and since I had a clean tank ready to go at home (was preparing it for the baby bettas my other betta had), i knew that since I had cycled the water and tested it, that if i could rescue the poor guy, then I'd have a tank ready. Unfortunately, he passed as I was driving home. Called the petco to return the dead body (and perhaps rescue another), and they said OK. Next day, girl goes ahead and "tests" the water in the cup. Note that I didn't open the cup as he was already dead. She goes on and on, giving me the dirtiest look, saying that the water was full of ammonia. Like no shit, why don't you look at the rest of your fish??? Said it was my fault, I should've acclimated him and put him in a tank asap. Been raising and caring for fish for almost 20 years. Imagine being told that it's my fault this fish died on the way home by a girl who was barely alive longer than I've been caring for fish. Smh. Boycott petco.

I'm glad you made this video. All of the Walmart stores in my state have stopped having live fish because of videos like this. I have rescued a lot of near death bettas from Walmart in the past. I felt so sad for them.

My betta was from Walmart and he was pretty sick when I got him so I brought him to the local fish store. The guy there took my betta and cared for him until he was healthy and then helped me choose a tank for him (five gallons) along with the proper heater, filter, plants, etc

There is not enough people like you in this world that have the awareness and care for these fish . I’m sure the fish are all very greatful

I shut down betta section in my walmart store i bough all them they had then i wrote a nasty email to manager about there care upkeep of it. Been 2 years since then not one betta has seen walmart by me ones i have are healthy happy.

Those bettas have been in that dish for so long that they struggle to swim in the bigger containers...I think you did a great thing man...Walmart would've restocked all of those fish when they all died regardless if anyone had bought them or not.. Dan's the man as well...thanks for sharing

I once brought a betta fish from Walmart, I thought I could save him. I put him in a tank made for betta fish and it was at the right temperature. But I must have been too late. He died 6 days later. Bless your soul hiro! ❤️😖

I feel ya. After I started recovering from my seizures I took up a position at a chain pet store, hoping I could make a difference and really be an asset in the care of their animals there. I even took home sick fish myself after they stuck 5 Oscars in a tiny five gallon together. I was able to recover one that had all his dorsal and tail fins shredded from his tank mates. Aquatic animals are seriously underappreciated, and most cooperate stores either don't know how to care for the animals they order, or don't care. So it makes me so happy to see this, people like you that just care about these animals enough to give them a fighting chance in better hands. Rescue and rehabilitation is a strong passion I have, and do so with reptiles. Keep up that care and love you have as you are a rare few!

Your buddy is asking a high price for his fish but I bet they are healthy and worth it. And also I got to say may God bless you for caring about little creatures. I once had a beta and I had to leave town with nobody to watch him. I actually drove instead of flying and put him in a Tupperware container and drove him to my destination with me, so he went on vacation with me for a couple of weeks, cuz I couldn't stand the thought of just letting my betta die. He even went in to all the restaurants with me. People kind of looked at me funny, but hey it was a hundred degree heat out there and I wasn't leaving him in the car.

But instead of buying them, first try to ask for them since they're already in terrible condition. I think that you should always ask to take them for free first. Second option being buying them...

My walmart used to have a beautiful and very well taken care of fish WALL. They had a huge variety with tons of tanks (salt and freshwater) covering a huge section of wall space and a few aisles. That was 11 years ago. They got rid of all their fish about 9 years ago.

That great Walmart customer service, "you ain't got no cart?".... Like just give me a damn box...

The betta tanks in his dad's shop should be a mandatory minimum for bettas. They're still small tanks for them but it would be a major step up from those cups.

It all depends on the store. I’ve seen Walmart’s where they have kept their tanks super clean and regularly changed out the water for the bettas. I’ve also seen some who literally just dumped ALL the fish mixed in together with no acclimation or quarantine… even the Bettas ended up in the wall of tanks instead of being left in their solitary cups. The only difference between the two stores were management and the people in charge of the fish, meaning the good practices store had someone dedicated to aquarium upkeep where the other just had whoever was free deal with fish shipments irregardless of what they’d been trained on. Now most Walmart’s have done away with the aquariums which is a blessing and a curse… I know that getting to watch those fish as a kid is one of the major thing that got me into the hobby.

Don't know why Wal-Mart would have live fish. They are Worse then petco or pet Smart.

We did this a few months ago. Unfortunately i only had the money and room for 1 beta. But he was not looking good at all at walmart and caught my eye, we wernt even there for a fish. It made me so mad and sad that he was in that condition, he was the worst looking one. I took him in, named him Walter, and now he has his own tank and is flourishing like no other! He looks so much better its unreal.

His new name is Squirt my 3 year old names him and he’s a happy little guy now! Hoping to be getting another one soon!
