My friend has a very similar motor home and his grandparents purchased it brand new and he had sentimental memories of going out in it with his grandparents and he wanted to fix it up and asked for my help. The first thing I did was to install a e4od transmission because overdrive is definitely needed. I then installed a fitech fuel injection system for better drive ability. After that I tackled wiring and installed a eaton battery charging system that balances and maintains the house batteries from the alternator and starting battery. We then updated the interior with solid core flooring throughout and a ton of led lighting along with newer appliances, sink, faucets and a new toilet in the bathroom and I reglazed the shower bright white and installed a few lcd tv screens along with stereo and speakers. He is now using it and taking his kids out in the motor home. The next upgrades are going to be solar panels and helper air bags front and rear along with a new ac unit and it is going to get a nice pure sine wave inverter. Installing the e4od was the best upgrade of all and I used a us shift controller. The e4od is the evolution of the c6 transmission and shares parts with the c6. Dexron fluid really won't hurt a transmission requiring type f fluid, the main difference is that type f contains a friction modifier. When I rebuild c6 transmissions I always use regular dex merc, dexron III H which came out in 2003 has a revised friction modifier in it. Ford transmissions have always been known for front pump seal issues and on the e4od, aode, 4r100 and 4r70w transmissions they are known for blowing out pump seals so on every one I drill and tap 3 #4-40 holes in the ridge under the lip of the pump seal and use 3 screws to help retain the pump seal.
My grandpa and grandma had a 1985 Chevy Camper same size as urs. And we always went on adventures when I was out of school for the summer. They went to all 49 states in it. They took a bunch of videos of them having fun and with me and my dad and my late best friends that rode with us. Me and my friends camped out in the tent. We had a bwat up window mounted air conditioner and it kept it cool in the tent. They sold it due to engine failure. And they brought a pop up camper and I have it and I had a company rebuilt it and it's like brand spanking new. People are like that's neat.
Thanks your video is very informative and helpful and you know how to explain things in it's simplest terms which is great for people who are learning about their vehicle. Thanks for being a great teacher your a blessing to all who watched this video
Thanks for the video. I purchased a 1968 Chevy G10 sport van 108 that was a camper that I plan on redoing the inside and then travel and live in it full time. I have been living in my 2007 grand caravan since a nasty divorce from an adultering ex skank and selling of the house last November 2021. I find your work ethic to be inspirational.
I just took my motor home to Sheboygan this afternoon to be put on consignment. We used to camp 13 times a summer but this year we just kind of lost interest. We enjoy boating a lot more now, that is more relaxing to me anyway.
If you can get that motor home to Richard at precision transmission in Texes I have a good feeling that he can stop that trans from leaking check out his RU-vid channel
Steve hope You read this although it's been awhile since the video came out. Absolutely you should fix it you being a Car Guy you know motors very well. That 460 is a awesome motor you can't kill those old 460 and they have the potential of awesome torque and horsepower. It being a Motorhome you want torque too beable to get up and go and be able to pull a trailer. With some work you can do it put in a small torque cam put a Holly Fuel Injection Carb on it and a good Air Ram induction system and a better Electronic Control system with a good exhaust system. You will have a Awesome running Motorhome that can pull a trailer comfortable. Plus get better fuel mileage and won't break the bank account doing the upgrades. Also you can buy New Fenders and Hood really cheap and there good quality. Don't buy those over seas crap there junk l can't remember the company that remanufactured them hear in the state's and they are good quality of steel. Again you being a Car Guy you probably already know who I'm talking about. Well Steve l hope that You restore your Motorhome back to perfect running condition. Plus would be nice to see an Old Motorhome looking amazing Not many of them out there anymore. Good Luck Brother...
About time someone realizes that the chassis MFG isn't the maker of the motorhome!! That's been a pet peeve of mine all the time. BTW I travel all over with a 1987 class A. Wouldn't trade it for a newer one, simple carburetor and vac advance HEI distributor so easy to work on.
