This week I tackle the cheapest Warhammer mini on eBay. The criteria are as follows. It needs to be a Games Workshop model, something that could potentially be rescued (not just left arm bits), and it has to be the least expensive thing I can find on eBay! Honestly I wasn't expecting much from this search, but I was pleasantly surprised! This Chaos Sorcerer I found was fantastic and I am super happy that I was able to recover it. I have several of the older sorcerer sculpts from back in the day, but I'm always on the lookout for the other ones. Especially that ridiculous one with the huge head, you know what I mean if you've seen it lol.

The thing i love the most about these projects is now that you've taken the time to really give this model a new life. It could quite possibly be one of the best representations we have of this model 20 years down the road, if it isn't already. Keep it up man love the content.

A tip so you don't have to use abrasive tools to remove CA/cyanoacrylate (super) glue from the joints n risk chunking out bits of pewter: try nail varnish remover or acetone and an old sacrificial toothbrush. The nail varnish remover will soften the adhesive and make it like putty, it'll then prefer to stick to the toothbrush bristles over the pewter of the model.

i really liked this model back in the day. don't know why exactly, but it was around the time that mordheim came out and i put together my own gang using models that fit. I hadnt played regular warhammer at the time, and i wasn't going to buy a whole army in a new game. but it was fun to go around the store and look at all the models i'd never really looked at before and just pick out some individual characters i liked the look of. This guy was one of them. I really like the stocky stance, stitched together robe, and the crazy skin mask over the helmet. Plus with the way mordheim allowed for customising weapon loadouts it was one of the first time i got to do a bit of moding. Cant remember exactly what i did, but it was fun to take the time to paint a few characters really well and make them my own. rather than collecting 40k, where all the characters were retty much just generic, or already existing heroes.

You need to darken the claws holding the crystal. They shouldnt be glowing. Also, I think less white under the pink "I think". The osl seems off and thats all I can think of that could be the cause. Great rescue though, and great vid👍

Another great rescue and a fun idea. Loved the mini too. I thought the brown wash kinda undid some of your great paint job though, and left a shine behind. I'd have been tempted to drop that stage. A great mini rescue nonetheless and look forward to the next one.

Just remember that if you never run the race, you can never win and are always guaranteed to never place. Trying and failing tend to be life's best way of learning, so long as we try to learn from our failures. Plus the upside of this in our hobby is if it really does not work out we can simply strip the miniature of paint and then start all over! I know that you can do this. You just need to try and have faith in yourself, your knowledge and your skills. With enough reps you'll be able to do OSL in your sleep.

I just got introduced to warhammer lore a couple months ago. Now I'm a Tolkien, halo, star wars nerd, and Warhammer nerd. I mainly know the Skaven lore.

Love that mini! When I bought one a long time ago they mixed it up with the bits from the other sorcerers from that time so I count that as my first conversion since I had to invent a staff and stuff for him!

I literally did this the other day; never painted an ork before, so found a Painboy on eBay for 99p, got it for £2.20 + P&P and hopefully will be worthwhile. Though perhaps the end product won't quite be to your standard. Of course now I'm searching for more stuff to paint after watching this!

Gotta love that burnt umber acrylic ink. Currently using the Liquitex one as a daily driver. Through an airbrush it's like a dream to use. Especially in opposition to a white zenothol starting point. Pretty sure I can no longer paint a model without adding it somewhere.

I love watching your videos Casey. I have a little request though. You clearly have a style that you like to paint, but recently, most of your minis are looking samish because of your style and color palette you tend to use. Please try something new. Something clean, non grim dark, non washed out and weathered look with some vibrant colors. I challenge you. ;)

I rarely buy anything anything new and love to check ebay on a regular basis. Most of the time you get great discounts and sometimes, you have this magical actions where it is 1 Euro, short time up and no bidders yet... and then you bid in the last moment and actually get it. Best I ever won was 1€ + 2,99€ for 20 Night goblins (1 Melee leader, 9 stabbaz, 10 shootaz). They had square bases, so I mainly used them for painting practice and now as a Mordheim Warband (and as additions for Frostgrave and Rangers of Shadowdeep) . But for under 5 bucks this is absolutely worth it. Only thing better are awesome paint job models that just say "painted" and are up for less than the packed models. I mainly use a Chaos Sorcerer Lord (painted in a Nurgly green scheme) as a Tiefling Warlock character in DnD, simply because it looks so real...for 6,99€, free shipping. Now I only need a great Dwarf Paladin/Cleric to use instead of my own "pro-painted" one. If I showed you a picture, you would hear distant Dawn of War Space Marine screams for sure. His face is basically just skin.

After watching this video I tried the same thing but for something specifically chaos related, and I managed to snag a deal for a 1990s Chaos Space Marine champion. He was already primed with his original base for $10.99 and free shipping. I’m pretty happy with him!

sweet paint work I have this guy too but mines missing the helmet and sword for the back , my original plan was to turn him into a chaos space marine sorcerer for my Nurgle army . love the osl that's one thing I've never been good at. and always fearful I'll ruin a good paint job with it.

I still prefer 5 min epoxy for pewters. It's less brittle. For high contact low force joints, just scuff them up. For middle stress joints, drill holes but not pin. For high strength pins. Waiting for the epoxy is a pain, but...

Normally I go for the pins, but in this case, the arms and head were so light that I was pretty confidant on the straight superglue. So far so good, nothings broken off yet :)

Hey Casey! I was wondering what kind of sonic cleaner you use. Are there any specific ones you recommend? I’m rescuing some eldar off eBay and I want a more effective method of cleaning them than the old simple green and tooth brush technique. Thanks!

And now that I've watched all the way to the end... I've gotta get me a smaller airbrush so I can try some of this stuff. That OSL came out nice. The only thing that might bump it up one last notch would be to darken back down the outside of the claw fingers a bit so they don't look they are glowing too. (Hobbyhack)

The Sotar 20/20 is a really nice small detail airbrush, and pretty inexpensive, so a bonus for that. I don't get it out often enough, but the last couple of weeks has me trying to really get in there with the small needle. Good call on the back of the claws, didn't really think about it.

What brand of enamel paint do you use for the enamel wash? Do you do anything with it in particular to have it act as a wash? I recall using enamel before and it was really thick so using it as a wash seems odd to me.

Thanks :) I use Windsor and Newton Series 7 and Squidmar MK1 brushes. First time airbrush user tips, make sure your tip is always clean, dry paint on the needle is your worst enemy. Thin your paints more than you think, skim milk is what you're after. aaaaand, start watching Next Level Painting with Kenny. Awesome dude and awesome channel with tons of airbrush focused videos, including some really good beginner ones. That's where I started and those videos were invaluable for me.

The enamel wash. Do you put down a varnish first? I’ve never heard you mention this in a video. I’d be afraid the White spirit thinner would destroy the acrylics.

The nice thing about white spirits is that it doesn't hurt your acrylic paint at all, so you don't have to varnish it before the wash. If the goal is to get the wash to go into the cracks and crevasses more easily then it does help to gloss varnish it first to lower the surface tension, but again, it won't hurt the paint :)

Just decided to give this a go myself - just managed to find an old Ratling Sniper for £4, and 3 old metal early 90s Terminators for £10, both with free postage. Not got a sonic cleaner, but have some meths and an old toothbrush, so should be able to get most of the paint off :)

Skaven is pretty open right now. I've been able to pick up so much of it for next to nothing. I'm really hoping for something new from Skaven though. There are a lot of older models that are tough to find these days.

Ugh, I tried the searching, but there are tons of entries from some french seller with bits, but they don't use bits in the title or anything else that I could exclude. Already 15 pages in. do you know a way to block single shops?

I’m not sure about single shops, but in the search you can exclude search terms like bits. Or if you go into the extended search parameters you can actually select single models, and not parts.

Got bored toward the end ? I think the claw that holds the crystal should be darker than the crystal itself. Maybe a deep purple or maybe just a gold or silver claw. I like the effect on the figure, but the staff seems unfinished.

The dremel doesnt remove metal, but make sure you wear a mask cause metal dust comes off when you dremel.

So, question for you. Do you think that painting a component on a model to reflect "reality" or aesthetics are mutually exclusive? For example, the skin face mask on the model would not have had the natural vibrancy in skin tone you painted because there is no longer a blood flow to the skin to maintain the hydrated high colour tone. The skin would most likely have been tanned and developed a dry dull patina or even a dry white colour and appearance. But this is fantasy (In either universe), so why worry right?

You did a great job, feel like you could have done a lot more detail though, especially for the staff. Its a lot better than anything I could have done but idk it looks like to me at least that you overused your airbrush? And just kind of sprayed everything everywhere. Maybe it's just my preference in painting styles but idk it just looked messy to me

Honestly I was a little disappointed when you applied the overall brown and green washes. I thought it drowned everything out, and took away a lot of contrast. Everything seemed like a brown mess that wasn't easy to pick out with the eyes. Would have liked to have seen a bit more time picking out smaller details with more colors, and highlighting the stitches on the skin coat.

Mate I love your videos . I have a knight that my best friend bought me I glued it together but unfortunately he committed suicide and I just can’t pull myself to paint it because I think I’d ruin it :(
