I used to pop into this live Eagle website that has cameras on multiple eagle nests around the country. For eagles - *sometimes* - they take a "survival of the fittest" situation w/ their babies, during scarce food times or when one parent is missing. I forget the word, but the babies actually start conking each other on the head in order to be first in line in case the food runs out. The runt can get really skinny & in rare cases, die. Hard to watch. 🌟But mostly amazing! 🌟

You should build something just under the nest to catch the chicks because most likely they will keep falling out because their becoming more and more active.
@Biffo1262
@Biffo1262 5 лет назад
Derrick McWhorter Why? Nature is nature and swallows have been doing this since time began. The weak one was unable to resist it's siblings actions and got pushed out of the nest. That way the strong ones assure survival; though there is no evidence to show their actions are intentional. It's just the way it is.
@The_Keeper
@The_Keeper 5 лет назад
@@Biffo1262 Why not? More swallows around means less bugs around, and I think everyone can agree that is a good thing. Besides, would you have let the injured adult die? Cause that was also as you put it: "Just the way it is."
@katk7505
@katk7505 5 лет назад
@@Biffo1262 that's not what's happening. They're fledglings and they come out of the nest at that stage and the parents feed them on the ground till they're ready to go. The only risk is a cat getting them and that's got nothing to do with whether they've got strong genes.

We recently had a Mockingbird nest in our backyard Palm Tree. We watched as they built the nest, then saw as the female spent more and more time in the nest till finally we saw a little head and beak pop up in view. We continued to watch it till one day we saw one of the babies had fallen out of the nest. I got a ladder put on gloves and put it back in, only to see it fall out again shortly thereafter. I think he found a place to hide and the parents kept feeding it. Was a beautiful experience. I loved how dedicated the parents were to the little ones. Great job rescuing the Barn Swallow. I think it was the Female.

Love seeing baby birds. We watched mockingbird parents raise a single baby this spring. They nested in our bay laurel bushes and would fly down to our lawn to gather worms. Never seen (or heard!) such a demanding baby bird in my life! Once it was old enough to fly down with its parents, it stood in the middle of the lawn and screeched at them all day long while they scrambled around to feed it. It was cool to watch but my god that bird didn’t give it’s parents a bit of peace. Those birds are jerks from birth to death. 😄 Now we are watching doves in a nest in the backyard. Haven’t been able to spot babies yet. Just parents sitting.

I've rescued lots of baby birdos. Mommy and Daddy will still feed them, though they might be nervous for a bit, but they will feed the babies, but thank you for being careful and returning them to the nest!

Poor barn swallow thanks a lot for helping the poor thing Do you think he hit something?

+kenny mooney - either hit the ceiling of the barn or got swiped by a cat. Not sure. Our cats are rather playful. So they are more interested in playing with a bird than killing it.

Amazing you were able to help the injured adult. I wouldn't have thought that possible. I spent some time in the Chisos Mountain Basin in Big Bend Nat'l Park with some friends back in the mid 1980's. One evening, after dinner, I walked outside of the restaurant and discovered a nest of cliff swallows on the side of the building. I'm just over 6' tall and the nest was only about 7 to 8 feet off the ground. It had three very well developed babies in the nest. I stood there watching when Mom showed up with a very juicy grasshopper in her beak. The babies were leaning well out of the nest competing to first in line for that grasshopper. As she approached, she got to within just a foot of so of the nest and then veered off. After several strafing runs on the nest, one of the babies leaned a little too far out and toppled out. It fluttered over to a small bush and landed. Mom was right there with the grasshopper which the youngster eagerly wolfed down and then she flew off again. A few minutes later, she returned with another grasshopper and started to process all over again. I was mesmerized. We got to watch all three of those babies fledge the nest that day. I've never witnessed that in person before and it was such a privilege. I also wound up with about a dozen people from the restaurant behind me, something I was totally oblivious to in the moment, who had walked out to see why this guy was just standing there gawking at the side of the building. When the last baby flew, they all broke out in applause, shouting and whistling. I about jumped out of my skin in the moment. It was so very cool! :-D
