The questions, research, and video for this episode was recorded prior to the death of Willie Mays. It's amazing how his death coincides with two of this week's questions, and losing him is a massive loss for the baseball and card community. Willie Mays is a legend and will be greatly missed.
Great questions this week as you all came through with quite a few amazing questions. I will cover five of those questions here, which include topics like: what happens to card prices when an athlete dies, finding deals, preparing for the National, and if population reports are accurate. When I recorded this episode on Tuesday morning, I never would have imagined that Willie Mays would pass away that evening. A question about Willie Mays and whether he's undervalued and a question about what happens to card values when a legendary player dies, both come up this week. Mr. Mays- thank you for the memories you gave this world...you will be missed.

Thanks for the plug Graig! I’ll have all baseball for the show. I’m finally breaking into my 70s cards which, as you know, are among the most affordably priced vintage cards. I will always work with collectors to get a price that works. Just like you are preparing for the National (I won’t be there this year) I am preparing for the Burbank Card Show in August and I have a few high end cards I’m saving for that. Question for next week. Do you see less people collecting cards in the next 10 to 20 years as we see this rise in high dollar packs due in a large part from rippers. Could we see in the future less physical cards and more cards that are online only if the next generation starts wanting to have less physical items such as cards, dvds and comics with streaming and the ability to own a card and a comic without actually holding it.

Question: when deciding to do a player run, do you target the big card (RC) first like a cornerstone piece to the run? Or do you save it for last as a culmination piece marking completion?

This is a great question and I got a similar one a couple weeks back. I don't go in any particular order. I try to buy the ones with high eye appeal that present themselves first.

Graig on the Ken Goldin topic well I’m 50/50 half not a fan of Ken and half a fan so there’s good and bad parts with Ken Goldin he’s done some good and Bad but after watching season 1 WOW i couldn’t wait for season 2 and it did not disappoint season 2 was great loved the show so maybe give it a try.

Ken Goldin came across, a cartoony villain in season 1. I haven't watched season 2, though. So, not sure if it's more of the same. I like that you brought up Chris Sewall's latest PSA card reveal video. It will be interesting to see if he slowly distances himself from PSA. We will see.

Chris Sewall is the Gold Standard for RU-vid Channels. I thought his video the other day about recent returns was extremely insightful and eye opening and I appreciate his authenticity.

I've watched the first couple episodes of Season 1. The cards and collectibles are fun, but the characters turn me off. There's sort of a "Wolf of Wall Street" feel to their staff meetings. They all kiss Ken Goldin's ass. Many of the scenes seem ... not organic or authentic. That is, artificial, staged for the show. How cringe-y is it that Ken asked his daughter on camera if she had sex with the men she met while visiting Italy? (shudder) It's like, "My daughter the slut" to add spice to the episode. No wonder she constantly had a smirk as if to say "My dad so full of himself." Anyway, I liked seeing the cards and collectibles. The forced acting, not so much.

Question for next week: I have seen a phenomenon start to become more prevalent since PSA grading has become more strict in the last year or so. I’ve been seeing more and more people/dealers selling on consensus eye appeal rather than grade comps. (Selling a nice 4 for the price of a 5) If we are using aesthetics of the market to determine these values, what is the point of grading other than protection and authentication? I’m curious what your thoughts are as I even remember you in card show videos asking for a discount on an older slab. I strictly collect PSA singles but when I see things like this, it’s difficult to blow off those “it’s all a scam” guys.

Crazy that Mays passed between filming and uploading this video. Life man, too short. Graig, my question is not about cards necessarily but about your youtube experience as a card collector. What do you look for in a sports card channel when you considering subscribing? Stated differently, what makes you hit subscribe on a channel you are not already familiar with.

So I am looking to buy the '57 Bart Starr. On Ebay the card is about $700. PSA 4 Or 5. At the national, there will be many copies of this. Since I can trade or negotiate at the National, do YOU think I should wait for the National? I would like to have this card by Dec. 2024.

Question : I have been collecting for the last 3 years and have accumulated a decent amount of valuable cards (for the budget I’m on). I mostly collect low to mid grade superstars in grades 3-6. Should I sell off a lot of my collection for 1 card of each player. For example I have around 10 Roberto Clemente cards worth around $2,000. Should I sell all of the cards I have of him to purchase the 1955 Rookie in a PSA 3? I really have a strong interest in owning some “bigger” cards of players I never thought I’d be able to own. Now that I have enough cards to sell to get closer to my goals it has become a reality but might also be a struggle. Is it worth years of buying cards just to cash them all in for one? Would you sell off let’s say 10-12 200 dollar card for 1 2,000 dollar cards? Long time viewer, keep up the great content Graig! Can’t wait to see your haul from the National.

My husband Skip is responding to your question about whether you like PSA-Graded Cards, SGC-Graded Cards, or raw cards. Here's his response: "I've been collecting baseball cards for almost 60 years. Most of the cards in my collection are raw cards. I've only bought some cards that were graded and most of the time I find the grading to be very subjective. It's always interesting to me to see videos of individuals who open their box of cards that they've just had graded. It seems like a crap shoot to me and a good deal of the time the people looking at what was graded are not too happy with the rating. Collecting, to me, is just for the joy of the sport and having cards of different players that I grew up with. I don't feel that I need a grading company to suck the enjoyment out of my cards by giving them a low rating. I myself look for sharp corners and vibrant colors, but I don't mind if a card is slightly off-center. In that respect, I like to be my own judge of my collection. I truly enjoy watching your show and keep up the good work." Note from wife: "I even like your show, too."

Thanks so much for taking the time to comment, Skip (and wife). I really understand that perspective and genuinely respect it. To me, the toughest part about ungraded cards, is that it leaves a difficult situation when the collector passes. If the family members that inherit the collection doesn't know much about cards, it's VERY difficult for them to know the appropriate value of the cards when they're ungraded. Going to ebay and typing in the information on the slab's label and grade, gives a VERY accurate idea of the value. That's my biggest concern about not grading cards....otherwise, I totally get it.

Question from last week: You mentioned in your ''short winded'' video. That one day, you would narrow down your collection to 100 cards. When you buy cards now, at the National, online, and other card shows are these cards that are going to be in your final 100, and how do you go about determining, which ones you're going to keep for the long-term, with all of the cards you already do have, since you collect pre-war, vintage, some modern various sports and non-sport, too? Here's another Question: Let's say, you win the lottery. And could now afford any card. What would be the first card, you buy? Looking forward to you sharing your thoughts for at least one of these questions. Darren, will help bring... the ratings up. 🙂 The ''off topic'', might be ON topic!

I’m still waiting to meet anyone who liked Mr. Mint. Great points on the indiscretions, inaccuracies and overall laziness of PSA. Who cares what number they randomly assign? I too saw Chris’ video… it was a long overdue eye-opener that showed the severity of how inconsistent and worthless these graders are. It’s in fathomable to ponder how much money people are wasting with this misguided and monopolistic TPG. Good money that could be spent on cards or actual necessities. I liked your analogy about the slow barge on the Nile River. Hopefully people are finally coming to their senses.

Follow up question. You talked about the card values, but what autographed cards (and maybe autos in general)? When a player dies the possibility for more autographs is gone. How would you go about collecting autographs of players who are no longer with us?

RIP to the incomparable Willie Mays. The timing of questions about card values when a legendary player dies and whether or not Mays cards are undervalued is uncanny. Nobody could have predicted that he would die the day this video was recorded. Regarding the last question, if I see a card I'm not necessarily looking for at a really good deal, I would be inclined to pick it up either for trade bait or a flip. Using the hobby to finance the hobby is a smart idea.

Now that Willie Mays has passed, I have a question for you. Please forgive me if my facts are a little off. I not a big baseball fan. I remember when MLB would bring Mickey Mantle out for events like the world series or all star games. They introduced him as the greatest living baseball player. Then it was Ted Williams before he died. Later it was Hank Aaron or Willie Mays. I consider those 4 the last of the legends. Lots of greats, but they were legends. Who does baseball bring out now as the greatest living player?

I would bring out Sandy Koufax. Greatest living player is debatable, but Koufax, a living legend, isn't up for debate. He's 88 years old. Tomorrow isn't promised.

I got a question for you. Have you ever tried to make a deal with some who didn't hide the fact that they were trying flip the cards that they got from yo for a profit and they acted like we're entitled to get the cards from you at discount because they were going to turn around and sell them. I'm like dude IDC if you're collecting the cards, going to sell them or set them on fire, none of that is my concern. I still want a fair deal for my cards. What you do afterwards is your problem not mines. What are your thoughts?

Hi Greg, two part question for next week: In your opinion, do you see Vintage Football as a whole, (Before 1980), increasing, decreasing or staying flat in value over the 10 years? Also, are there any players you would recommend investing in from that Era that you feel will increase in value? Thanks for your opinions.

Most collectors (at least for modern) focus their attention on the QB's. So maybe some of the vintage quarterbacks that haven't increased could see modest gains.

Regarding the 1952 Topps Mantle: If there are 30 of them on eBay and 30 of them at The National, as the questioner posits, how can it be considered "rare"? Yes, everybody wants one. But even a PSA 1 is beyond the vast majority of collectors. It may well be that the supply is greater than the number of collectors who can afford to buy them.

I try to remind myself the hobby, is not logical. It's an iconic card, and has always had great demand for long as I can remember. Rarity is a factor, but not the only factor imo. There also has to be an X amount of people that want a card, too . And yes, can afford it. Even if the Mantle 1952 Topps isn't scarce, the demand out weighs the supply, I think. So I agree with you.

I think that card is online and "for sale" in many cases when it's not REALLY "for sale." It's not rare like a Honus Wagner T206, but it's still not as common as some people act like it is.

I was actually bidding on a 1966 topps Mays PSA2 well centered, the comps for that card were roughly 50$, I bid up to 52$. This was before Mays passed away, thought I was in good shape bidding wise, a couple hours before it sold it was at 38$, again thought I was in good shape. The card ended up selling for 118$, disappointed then learned of his passing and really felt bad.

My daily HOF search was flooded with Mays the morning after his death. It still is. Mostly dealers seizing the opportunity to raise prices while they can, I suppose.

I had three League Leaders cards featuring Willie Mays listed on eBay at the time of his passing yesterday. Within an hour of the news breaking, all three cards were bought outright (no offers attempted) by the same dealer who no doubt planned a quick flip and profit. I have no doubt they made a wide sweep of Mays cards yesterday evening.

Not going to lie, there was still a Mays all star card on my 1959 set checklist, when I heard the news I did two things: text my homie who’s a giants fan, and pick up that all star card before prices potentially spike

@@MidLifeCards it looks like *asking prices* (dunno about sales) have jumped about 15-25% on his psa 7 cards from the ‘59 set (the only set from this era I have a good internal knowledge of prices for due to my building a psa 7 set of em) in the last 4 days. Potentially saved myself $100.
