A video which covers some of features of your Ledger Nano that you may not use very often, but that are still good to be familiar with if you want to do things like verify your seed phrase backup. (using the recovery check app) Know what the legit process for restoring a seed phrase looks like (to help you avoid scams) and also for how to safely use a BIP39 passphrase that is assigned to a PIN.
---------------------
If you are new to Crypto, my suggestion is that you start with buying ~$150 worth of Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin @ Coinbase and get familiar with storing it, moving it around, etc.
For your first purcahse, just stick with CoinBase: www.coinbase.com/join/5691c9d...
For Trading, just start with Binance: www.binance.com/?ref=18111926
By sticking with large, reputable exchanges for your first purchase (Coinbase) and first trade (Binance) you can avoid getting scammed right at the start by purchasing a non-existing coin off a scammy exchange. (You would be surprised how many people fall into this trap)
Don't have a hardware wallet?
Be safe and buy them direct from the manufacturer. (Not just through some random on eBay, Amazon, etc)
Get a Ledger: shop.ledger.com/?r=5243ecbb84...
(If you are just starting out, I would just recommend a Ledger Nano S)

Note to viewers: never type your passphrase into a computer. In this example he writes "Passphrase=cat" into the account name so you can see which account it is, but don't do this yourself 😉

FYI, I wiped out my ledger and restored it without the recovery check just fine. When you set up your device for the first time, You still have to verify each seed word that is generated, So I don't see why the recovery check is so important.
@CryptoGuide
@CryptoGuide 3 месяца назад
Two reasons. Firstly, Ledger only added that check to the initial workflow in the last couple of years, so many people with older devices set it up without any check at all... Secondly, folk often do things like stamp their seed to steel, or make copies... You need to run recovery check for every copy you make, as folk often introduce errors when making copies...

Have watched several of your Ledger videos. You really know your material well. Quick question: if I have a pin and (upper/lowercase) passphrase on my Trezor model T to access MyEtherWallet, can I duplicate that on my Ledger Nano X and access the same ERC20 assets? If so, when installing the Nano X should I use the attach to PIN passphrase or the Temporary passphrase, or does it matter?

In regards to the "pin-code passphrase (not normal pin-code)", so let's say I am recovering my seed phrase + passphrase do we need to always use that specific pin-code that we originally set up with in order to access any funds tied to that passphrase account/25th word, or can we assign a different pin-code to the passphrase/25th word upon new recovery?
@CryptoGuide
@CryptoGuide Год назад
You can assign the BIP39 passphrase to any pin you like. You can do change the secondary PIN and passphrase associated with it at any time. (Though this doesn't automatically move any funds that are already associated with a given seed+passphrase)

Normally the sheets you write them in will also have numbers to remove the kind of ambiguity. If you are unsure, you will just have to try entering it both ways, it's likely that only one will work. (And either way,only one will have your funds)

@CryptoGuide

Thanks. :) If you reset and recover, you will need up set up the passphrase, but it doesn't need to be assigned to the same PIN as before. As long as the seed and passphrase are correct, setting the PIN to something else doesn't matter. (I cover this in a video that looks at seed phrase, passphrase, pin and password)

Hi man love your channel and the way you deal people. I wondered if you could help. I have tried to read other comments to get my head around it but have struggled! I have a nano x I’ve only ever put crypto on it. Never taken it off. I have tried to take funds off it today for the first time and I get the classic message ‘something wrong with recovery or pass phrase. So I reset my ledger, reinstalled and connected the apps and recovery phrase, to still get the same error code when I try to transact. I have never used a pass phrase before.. do I need to have one in order to transact? I can’t think of any other reason why I can’t remove my crypto. So sorry to pester you dude but I’m really struggling for help. All the best either way ✌🏻
@CryptoGuide
@CryptoGuide Год назад
Thanks. :) Basically the error means what it says, so either the seed+passphrase that you have running on the Nano doesn't match the seed+passphrase that was active on there when you added the account to Ledger Live. Passphrase is an advanced feature that you need to manually enable with Ledger devices, so it's unlikely that you accidentally enabled it. Have you ever had other Ledger devices or reset the device and reinitialized with a new seed? (Sometimes people will reset the device and assume that it will just give them the same seed back, when actually you will get a new seed every time)

The seed is not tied to the device at all. You can wipe it and create a new wallet with a new 24 words at any time. (You will need to manually move your funds from the old to new) You can also restore the seed in to any other hardware of software wallet.

I am trying to have a simple recovery process that i can use on any hardware wallet using BIP39 i want a recovery process that looks like this: 1) input the 24 words seeds 2) input an alphanumeric password 1 + 2 --> into a KDF = private key = wallet restored. Which hardware wallet allow for this? In this tutorial there is some confusing ledger proprietary terminology. Why would i want a temporary passphrase or pin? Seems just a confusing and risk prone convenience. attaching a pin to an account also is a confusing concept. Maybe i am just confused but can you clarify? thanks
@CryptoGuide
@CryptoGuide 3 года назад
Every BIP39 wallet worth having supports the kind of key derivation you are referring to. (Ledger, Trezor, Keepkey, Coldcard, Cobo Vault, Bitbox02, etc) BIP39 passphrase support is part of the BIP39 spec in the same way that the seed phrase is. It isn't vendor specific beyond any specific limitations that any single vendor might have. (I talk about this more in my video about "seed, passphrase, pin and password") In the context of a Ledger, you might want to assign a passphrase to a PIN for the sake of convenience and error resistance basically... Temporary can be used if you want a slightly increased level of security and it is also useful for verifying the passphrase attached to a PIN.

Once a passphrase is attached to a secondary PIN, you don't need to enter the full passphrase anymore. In terms of backups, you are right in that you need Seed+Passphrase, but the PIN doesn't matter. If you have all of your accounts in Ledger Live then yea, this will be obvious. In terms of there being evidence of funds moving then yea, this is all public on the blockchain, though it isn't any way that someone would know that you have sent it to your own accounts as opposed to elsewhere.

@@CryptoGuide @pachmann4869 I had the same question, and had often wondered how it works with multiple wallets within Ledger. So it seems to me that having a decoy wallet and a passphrase wallet is no protection at all from a $5 wrench attack, if we leave the account visible in Ledger. (of course, protection from $5 wrench attack isn't the only reason to use a decoy & passphrase, but still). Suggestion would be then, to delete the passphrase-protected wallets from Ledger Live when they're not being used regularly. What a pain. Any other workarounds? When setting up a second ledger, do I set it up with the 24 words then add the 25th word that matches the 25th word on my first ledger and that will give me access to the same funds? Thank you
@CryptoGuide
@CryptoGuide 2 года назад
1. You don't need to reinstall any apps on the ledger, these will use whatever keys are active in your Ledger at any given time. 2. With Ledger, any wallet that can work without a passphrase will work the same with one. (Like above, the ledger will just represent whatever accounts are active at the time) The main catch with 1 and 2 above is that for wallets like Metamask, Ledger Live, etc, where you "pair" the device, basically the pairing will represent which ever account was active at the time of pairing. (So if you add a passphrase, you will need to add the new accounts for that, I explain this in my video on juggling multiple ledger devices) 3. For a second device, you would restore the seed as per normal and then enable passphrase on the second device as well.

I tried to recover that wallet in ANOTHER wallet from ANOTHER wallet provider (like metamask for example). But when I finish typing in my 24 seed words, The metamask does not show my old account. I know if I recover my wallet to another ledger wallet, I just have to put in the 25th (passphrase), and it will show my old account again. But in this case, metamask has nothing like a passphrase, and I can't access my account without typing in my 25th seed word somewhere. So what if someday my ledger broke down and I can't recover my account in any other wallet from other wallet provider without a "passphrase feature"? Hope you can give me a solution or an explanation for this. Thank you so much!

I am still not convinced of the security of a hardware ledger..suppose I have a 24 word and I just use those words from the BIP dictionairy... This means, if someone has the same 24 words in sequence...I am taking over their wallet??? That means also someone else who has the seed phrase..can just take over that wallet...so how is that safe? And what if the hardware wallet assigns the same 24 words..which would be 2 ledgers with the same private keys? ...which would be a disaster...would they share the same account :D..

let me get this straight, i can create a wallet with 24 words(seeds), i can add a pin to protect it. correct? if I put a Passphrase (25th word) I will have to add it once, and then to access it on my device I would use a different pin. is this right? and in case I want to do this countless times, I put a different Passphrase and a pin to access it. in case I reset my ledger or lose and want to restore on another device this pin will be useless, because what the new device will ask for will be my 24 words (seeds) and the Passphrase (25th word), correct? thank you in advance for always clarifying our doubts, your videos are the best :D

I have a very stupid question. Literally new to the crypto world so go easy plz. When I buy BTC or ETH and transfer to a ledger does the price fluctuate as it normally would while stored in my ledger ?
@CryptoGuide
@CryptoGuide 4 года назад
No problem, everyone has to learn. Once you exchange cash for crypto, the amount of crypto you have will stay the same, regardless of where you store it, but the value in dollars will move as the rest of the market fluctuates. (Eg: if you exchanged dollars to BTC and got 0.1 BTC, then you will have that same 0.1 BTC stored, even if the dollar value shifts)
@garytrevino6186
@garytrevino6186 4 года назад
@@CryptoGuide ahhh ok so its strictly a method of storing and nothing else. That's neat because I'd hate to have my crypto being "at risk" depending where I buy that crypto from, cool. Well hey thanks. Do you think a Ledger Nanos X is a good one to get? I know the halving put a sale on the S version but was curious on someone else's opinion. If you don't mind.

@@CryptoGuide let's say I have 2 BTC & 3 ETH stored in a ledger. If BTC or ETH skyrocket, if I choose to transfer from the ledger back to like coinbase as an example would my amount of USD be at where the market is at during that moment ?

Both the Nano S and Nano X are great devices and are basically the same from a security and feature standpoint. (As you can see here: cryptoguide.tips/hardware-wallet-comparisons/) The key differences are that the Nano X works far better if you are using your wallet primarily with your mobile. While you can connect a Nano S via a USB OTG cable if you have an Android phone, it is super clunky. (And doesn't work at all if you have an iPhone) The Nano X also supports more apps, so is useful if you want to have a tonne of altcoins. If you just have BTC+Eth and are happy to interact with your wallet via a desktop PC (or Android phone sometimes) then the Nano S is great, especially given the 50% off deal at the moment. If you do decide to buy one, if you make your purchase using this link here: shop.ledger.com/?r=5243ecbb8427 I will get a few bucks to help support the channel :)

So my Ledger Nano S is suggesting a word opposite to the one I have written down. I know I don't have the wrong word because I've used this phrase before and it went through, in fact, my nano ledger suggested the correct word, but now it's not, is there any way around this?
@CryptoGuide
@CryptoGuide 3 года назад
The word list hasn't changed, so it is probably you making a mistake somewhere. Have to tried looking through the words that the Ledger suggests, as it will often suggest several. All the BIP39 words are unique based off the first four letters, so you can easily look at the BIP39 word list and check the first four letters of what you have written down to double check that it is a valid BIP39 word. So, unfortunately I have been scammed for a small amount of crypto, as I had given my recovery phrase to a fake Ledger browser. That being said, can I still use this devise as a cold storage, for future crypto? Should I follow what you are suggesting above in the video?
@CryptoGuide
@CryptoGuide Год назад
I'm sorry for your loss, in the future be sure to understand that the seed is only ever entered in the Ledger Nano device. The physical Ledger Nano is fine, you just need to wipe it and reinitialise with a new seed.

@@CryptoGuide Thank you for the kind words and advise, I wish I would have listened to my better judgement talking to me at the time, ha...but you live and learn. So I can just use the instructions that are in the video above, too reuse the cold wallet again?
@CryptoGuide
@CryptoGuide Год назад
Yep, it's as simple at getting the PIN wrong three times and then selecting to reinitialise with a new seed. You should also annotate the old seed to be sure that you don't mix it up with the new one. You will also need to manually remove all the accounts from the previous seed from Ledger Live.

If you have lost your entire seed phrase and wiped your hardware wallet then this is unrecoverable. If you are a software wallet user your only hope is the data recovery route on your PC.
