Reshape A Cowboy Hat At Home

Shaping a felt cowboy hat is more simple than you think and can be done from home. All you need is an iron for steam, some sort of ball that can be used for shaping, some packaging tape for cleaning, and hat stiffener.
Step One Cleaning:
When you shape a cowboy hat or a felt hat, it is important to clean it first. You can do this with a lint roller, or by using the sticky side of packaging tape.
If you don't clean the hat, the felt harder will be ineffective because the dust and dirt will simply get stuck inside the felt fibers.
Step Two Spray the Hat with Felt Stiffener:
Next you will need to prepare the felt with hat stiffener. Do not use Starch or Hairspray. Starch or Hairspray will eventually flake or cause yellowing and discoloration. I use Bickmore Kahl Hat Stiffener, it's cheap, and gets the job done well amzn.to/2MYHXsa
You will need to apply liberal amounts and essentially soak the hat with stiffener.
Step 3 Let the hat dry completely.
Step Four Three Return the Hat to it's original state:
Cowboy hats and other felt hats have a natural form. A cowboy hat would have looked like a slouch hat prior to being molded to the shape it came in. This means that the crown needs to be stretched out into a dome shape and the brim flattened. To do this make sure you use steam. Steam will cause the stiffener you sprayed on the hat to begin to help you form the hat. It also allows the felt to properly stretch and mold. You will need a way to stretch the felt and pull out the wrinkles in the hat. I used a slightly deflated small soccer ball to fit inside the crown of the hat. The ball gave me enough resistance to pull and stretch the felt of the crown smooth again.
Step Five Reshape:
Once you have removed all the wrinkles in the hat, you may now begin reshaping the hat. In this video I did a tear drop crown, which is typical of a roper style cowboy hat.
While reshaping your hat remember to always steam first, then shape, then spray stiffener and let it dry for a few moments.
The key to reshaping the hat is to pull off one shape at a time, then once it has held a dried, start the next shape shape.

Great job! I have an inexpensive wool felt cowboy hat that came with a cattleman crease I wasn’t too crazy about. Since I didn’t have a steam iron, I did it the old-fashioned way and ran hot tap water over the crown and inside of it. I even filled it up. I was able to push the old crease out and reformat much the same way you have done here. I was able to reshape the brim using hot water the same way. After I was satisfied with the way it looked, I propped it up and let it dry overnight. I could never get the hat stiffener to do much of anything by just spraying it on, so I poured some in a bowl and used a paintbrush and saturated the whole hat. When it dried it turned out awesome. Stiffened the whole hat up, much like an expensive beaver felt hat. Next time, I’m going to try your steam iron and soccer ball trick! (rxcept, I will probably have to use a basketball for my head size! Lol!) thanks for the great video!

not bad for hand form....fur felt is compacted fibers using conditioner on it breaks the compacting bonds. if it is a good hat maybe no problem I did that with a cheapy hat the fur felt came apart. just an observation! wrinkles are the first sign the bonding is breaking on the fiber bunch... oh well! still good job use good plastic wrap put it in the hat damp a towel, a cheapy thin one, spray glue on the plastic wrap side. stick it in the hat let dry...when you like the form cover the hat edges spray the glue on the inside let it dry. hat form... take it out when do spray the hell out of the form until you can drive a truck over it. HAT FORM ,...put in a full size box so the hat is in a closed bax!! good to go partner, texas method

If you do this often or have a large collection you should invest in a Clothes Steamer they have bigger reservoirs for the water and allow you to get into tighter spaces with the wand on a hose They are reasonably priced on sale usually under $100.00 And Ive seen off brands online for less money I imagine will work fine as those are usually Chinese Clones Stetson brand hats allow you to steam and reshape many times due to the blend of Furs they use to make the Wool ive even steamed hats over a boiling pot of water on the stove
