Yea. The remake handguns in general are just awful. The starting handgun has massive recoil...completely unrealistic and terrible from a gameplay perspective. I couldn't really stomach it.
@@alanlee67The thing is with re remakes is they’re usually faithful in the locale but gameplay is very different. Leon is much more mobile in the remake so they balance it out with higher recoil so you don’t just run around mowing down enemies, it’s not for everyone but to me I’m very happy where they took it. Beat the original a while back and I love how they reimagined the gameplay loop.
I was one of the lucky ones that first played this on the gamecube at release. Back then the hype came from gaming magazines, and i just couldnt believe the printed screenshots. I remember just inviting friends over to witness these graphics. It was truly a next gen leap like no other for me.
I played it on GC at release too. The hype for this game was unreal and the best part was that it lived up to that ridiculous hype and still considered a classic today. Hard to believe it had such a troubled developement.
@@kicapanmanis1060 well, the troubled development also spawned another beloved saga (Devil May Cry) and an horror cult classic (hunting grounds), so maybe it was worth it :)
It still looks fantastic to this day Imo. Especially considering the time it dropped. Capcom have always had really good graphics in all the resident evil games.
@@lpnp9477 Devil May Cry 3 HD is still downgraded from PS2, but miles better than the original SourceNext port. RE4 was ported by the same dev team BTW. Even MGS2 and MGS3 received downgrades on PS3, X360 and 3DS.
@@VergilHiltsLT eh, i wouldn't know. I've only played the pc and Xbox 360 versions of 3. Obviously the sourcenext version was garbage but the version on steam was excellent. What was lost from the ps2 version?
@@lpnp9477 just look up devil may cry 3 hd analysis. they messed up a lot of effects and even Dante's hair in the hd version. it's a decent port, but it's one of those games that feels best to play on original hardware on a CRT. DMC1 even more so because they messed up the sound and a loooot of visuals... even RE1 remake HD version has audio issues (sped up tracks, etc)
John is right, the laser sight aiming was nice. By the way the Resident Evil games on Nintendo 3DS (Revelations and Mercenaries 3D) also used the RE4 laser sight. Sadly every subsequent port of RE: Revelations replaced the lasers with standard crossairs.
@@ActNasty5 the more frustrating is the Blacktail, given that it's a modern pistol and also the 3D model clearly has an accessory rail under the barrel!! 😅
In original RE4 projectiles spawned from the gun, which is why they need a laser pointer in the first place. In the remake projectiles spawn from the center of the screen like most shooters do. So even when you can use a laser sight it's cosmetic. Bullets always go to the center of the screen
the 2014 hd remaster is only a little bit better. its based of the xbox 360/ps3 versions, but yet the keyboard and mouse controls are screwed up. fortunately, re4 tweaks helps
Never played the botched PC port. This was from a time where PC ports were very hit or miss, especially from Japanese companies. But playing the HD re-release and then the Remake back to back really puts into perspective how far game visuals have come. It's also impressive that the OG version, still looks great and timeless in a way a lot of the best 6th gen games do.
17:15 RE6 actually uses both a reticle and a laser, but you can buy a skill, which can be unlocked very early in the game that turns off the reticle and leaves you with only the laser like in RE4 and 5 with extra damage on top.
@@FoxDie77777 ohh I never saw that option, have to check it out. I only remember that there was a skill that disables the reticle and only leaves the laser for added damage.
Poor John clearly didn't find the option either. 😅 I get where he's coming from, but the laser sight on ALL of the guns doesn't really make sense. At least not with the older style ones.
I haven't played so potentially F me, but it sounds like the laser is not diagetic in REm4ke, where as the original had the laser coming from the gun itself.
I guess I'm one of the few people who actually cleared the 2007 version using keyboard only; I've played that version so many times until it became a muscle memory.
I was really sad when I found out that the newer steam version does not have the keyboard controls! I can still remember the control scheme after all these years because it's just so different than any other games even at that era
My first introduction to RE4 was with this PC port, used to play at those PC clubs where you pay to play. So the owner of that place in my town finished this version of the game, all the kids used to gather around him and just watch, was so much fun lol.
From 23:02 to 23:16 video footages were swapped/mislabeled vice versa. At first I thought when leon got inside the house, the color grade of both versions changed but that wasn’t the case.
There was an official patch v1.10 that restored most of the shaders from the PS2 version which made a lot of difference and brought back effects, it was still not as good as the Gamecube
One thing I'd like to mention that I don't think was brought up at all (sorry if I missed it) is that the PS2 version also came with Progressive Scan for 480p output on TVs that could support it, and it honestly made a significant difference on the few CRT TVs that did, as well as early HDTVs.
Yes on OPL you can forced 480p via GSM settings and the game looked a lot cleaner that way compared to hazy blurry 480i or default 480p. I even tried forced 1080i once and its not bad at all.
PS2 version still looks worse overall, what with it's low quality textures and simplified geometry. The GC version on a CRT or with a component cable still looks vastly better than the PS2 version running in Progressive Scan.
The original game had a certain edge and charm to it that can't be replicated, it was authentic. Not bashing on the remake at all, I'm playing it currently and very much enjoying it. Leon looks so badass in the original. Tired-eyed, like he'd seen some real shit yet kept his cool.
That PC gamepad from the tutorial looks like one of those budget 3rd-party sticks you'd find on the bottom shelf at a Wal-Mart or something, next to the $5 shovelware. I bet it would work great for Big Rigs.
@@mickeman3967 I had this controller back at the day but It was from GC only and had GC face buttons, the funny thing this controller had a ventilation system wich keep your hands always dry.
@@mickeman3967 I actually found a controller with this exact same layout. It's not exactly the one in the video (that i also used to have), but it has 100% exactly the same layout. Just look for "Old EA Sports PS2 Controller".
I never played the GameCube version, at that time I could only get the PS2 one and I loved it. After that I had the chance to play other versions (360, Wii, PS4, Switch) and the Wii edition is my favorite of all (the use of the Wiimote was awesome). Still, I want to try the GameCube one, it looks awesome
"Sourcenext were also responsible for developing the infamous Resident Evil 4 2007 PC Port and despite popular claims, Ubisoft were only responsible for publishing the game in the west and were not involved in its original development. Initially when the game was first released on PC; it lacked any lighting at all and a patch was released later on that fixed the issue, bringing lighting back into the game" from RE wiki.
The GameCube version blew us away at the time. That must partially be the reason as to why Nintendo no longer strives for the best hardware. The PS2 ran train on that ass during this generation.
Yes! The GameCube was the last great console from Nintendo IMO. Powerful hardware, exclusive deals on resident evil and metal gear remake plus the usual first party and still undersold. Shame!
@@sethross7217 Yeah because PS2 sold off being a dvd player alone, i mean it was a wise choice to move away from trying to directly compete with sony considering how successful the wii ended up being.
Well, this PC port later received a patch that restored all the lightning, and looked even better than PS2 cuz it didn't have audio compression and low polygon enemies in larger amounts.
There was actually a community made patch that improved the PC version. I remember it had a cinematic patch and a ENB bloom mod along with some texture mods.
This pc version was the first version of RE4 that I played. I've finished this version playing only with the keyboard, seeing Alex shooting with the enter key gave me horrible flashbacks, what a great game though.
That would be amazing. Have Alex on a modern PC @4k with the mod installed, and then John could be playing the GameCube version on the Dolphin emulator at 4k.
I remember plenty of PC versions at the time having trouble with overlapping alpha transparencies. The fixed function pipelines of the PS2 and Gamecube had no problems with that but even emulators of those systems often mess that up. Playing e.g. R-Type Final on pcsx2 would have some delta attacks obscure the whole screen instead of being properly transparent. I thonk that may have been fixed only recently?
This is so nostalgic for me. I bought this back in 2007 for PC, since I had RE4 on GameCube but missed out on the extra DLC in the Ps2 version. Not only was it a pain to set up and get running, but it forced 13 year old me to buy my first PC game pad because the PC version did NOT support mouse and keyboard. What a horrible experience 😂
I played Silent Hill the first time on Bleem with the gamepad that came with the PC version of Megaman X, it didn't have enough buttons so I had to map things like Start and Select to Shift/Enter. I played through the whole game that way back in the 90's and when I finally played SH1 on my PS2 with a proper controller sometime in the future it was so much better :P
As a kid, i couldn't play the game, first, i would crap my pants just at the PS2 boot, second, just hearing the chainsaw coming i would just turn off the console right away. The first time I "played" it was with my parents. He had so much fun playing it, every night we would play resident evil 4. This game is such a big part of my life.
It was a shame that the 07 port used the ps2 version as base instead of the Gamecube one, we had to wait until 2014 for a "better" port but that one also had some issues at release, some shaders were missing and the 60fps broke some animations and enemy spawns, etc...
I guess it's easier since Saparate Ways already in it?. I mean they may get hard time porting Saparate Ways in it so they decided to use Ps2 as a base. Ps2 also downgraded model and polygon for good performance I guess?.
These first port attempts by Capcom were so ungodly bad but they did do a sharp improvement in their port jobs with the following generation, DMC4 and RE5 PC versions were pretty good and nowadays Capcom's PC versions are some of the best with just some small quirks, the current RE4 Remake on PC runs really well while looking fantastic, even almost fully avoided the horrid traversal/load stutter that every new triple A game seem to be plagued by, i say almost fully cause in my 10 hours i did have like 4 or 5 times where i experience one but that is nothing compared to like the recent Dead Space Remake which had so much more which were easily replicated. It's a good move that Capcom went back on their "promise" of forever exclusivity of RE4 on GC, otherwise a ton of people would've never had the chance to experience it because the GC sold almost nothing when compared to the PS2. The GC also had such a tiny market control in some places, where i grew up i never met a single person or even saw a single shop selling GCs, only PS2s during that whole generation, it just had 0 presence in Southern Europe and Balkans.
PS2 uses R1+X to shoot, HD version on PS3 uses R1+Square, my brain hurts every time. Long time ago my friend showed me how that PC version looks and controls on keyboard (along with GTA SA), I was so disappointed and psychologically wounded that I can't play on PC to this day.
RE6 has an in-game option to switch to laser sight from crosshair. Same goes for Revelations 2. REmake 4 also has a few weapons that do have laser, namely, some pistols and the Terminator magnum.
@@PetrCobra Nah, that's in a whole league of its own. RE4 on PS2 is a respectable port. It's not obviously not meant to run on a ps2 like DOOM is not meant to run on SNES.
I actually finished this version back in the day, although with the patch that restored the lighting. If I remember correctly it was also locked to 30fps? Just horrible.
It is also worth mentioning that if the PS2 is connected using Component cables, by holding "Triangle+Ex" after the "Playtation2" boot logo the game would load progressive scan mode at 480p. The game looks sharper and runs smoother on this mode.
As someone that already owned a widescreen HDTV in 2005, I couldn't play the Gamecube version due to Capcom's regrettable decision not to include widescreen. The PS2 version still looked great and had Ada's campaign, making it a better overall release, IMO.
You can unlock a laser sight in RE4 remake, but it behaves weirdly. It's like the sight's origin is coming from the center of the screen and extends back towards the players gun instead of coming from the gun itself. The result is a little awkward looking as the laser wobbles in and out if alignment with the gun since the dot has to stay perfectly center screen like the cross reticle does. I wish they did what the Dead Space sequels and Remake did where you could chose either a proper laser aiming system or a center screen cross hair.
Despite Capcom's ports to the PC being of varied quality in the 00s at least they were still supporting the platform when most developers and publishers abandoned the PC due to piracy. The situation improved in the 10s significantly but I will always remember the companies that still supported the PC during its darkest days. :)
I played the PC version in 2007 and I had a Radeon GPU that didn't support pixel shader 2.0 that the game required, I had to use a hack/mod to either emulate pixel shader 2.0 or downgrade the game's pixel shader to the 1.4 version. It was a mess of a port and people on forum's were all mad at Capcom. The controller that appears at 19:00 was a real third party XInput controller, coincidentally I had one and played the game with it. The main body of the controller was made of cheap translucent orange plastic and the outer handles were made of black rubber. Also, the in-game QTE prompts matched perfectly the controller's button labels, so I had no problems with QTE while everyone else on PC suffered 😅
thanks for using the actual consoles and recording the output , compared to using emulators on a PC. The emulators totally change the feel of the game.
The PS2 version is the one I played first. Was a bit disappointed when I found out about the visual downgrades, but the game is fantastic and looks great regardless. I think they probably could've done even better and gotten closer to the GC version if they had taken more time. Since it did release within the same year it might've been a rather rushed port, although if so it's a pretty good one.
@@Wol1427 Actually, in some aspects the Ps2 version has anamorphic widescreen vs letterboxed widescreen in the Gamecube version and it renders at slighty higher res 640x448 vs 640x360 in Gamecube.
Played entire game with friend on PC in 2007 on keyboard. We were so intrigued by this game, so all technical problems and even awful controls didn't scare us off. I fondly remember that hot summer.
Finished the original aiming with keyboard, after an hour you get used to it and start landing headshots - had a lot of fun, still one of my favorite games of all time, glad I didn't know port was bad in 2007 :)
Having spent my childhood playing RE1-3 on repeat over and over again on PS1, I was so mad when RE4 dropped for GameCube exclusively that I waited for the PS2 release. All these years later I didn’t realize just how bad my experience was on PS2 vs GC…
PC port was based on the PS2 port which had to have graphical downgrades and 30fps because of the PS2 weird architecture. Then they ported that code which was already turned to spaghetti for the ps2 back to PC instead of starting with the original source. It's like doing a Google translate of a phrase that was already ran through the translator multiple times. Just a baffling decision.
I personally like that inventory selection pauses the game. Gives you a moment to think about what to do next should you choose to. Almost like the game is turn based.
I only ever played the gamecube version a hand full of times. But I manly played the PS2 version and didn't even notice and diffrance 🤣🤣 but the remastered versions for xbox and PS are great
The Nintendo GameCube version of Resident Evil 4 was/is incredible. Stunning visuals when it released in 2005. When it released on PlayStation 2 not long after the GameCube’s release, it was immediately clear that the Nintendo GameCube was far more powerful than most people thought. PlayStation 2 version has worse colors, no AA and only can run with half the polygon count compared to the GameCube version. GameCube was massively underrated by gamers and developers. Nowadays, people (some whom even never owned one) worship the Nintendo GameCube. Nobody is talking about the PlayStation 2, and I couldn’t care less for this DVD player with game functionality. Start the console wars (again), Nintendo is still the best game company in the world. And they always were and they will always be the best video game company ever. Leave luck 🍀 to Heaven. There can be only one.
Just imagine the fact there was a device with amazing precision for more than 20 years and Capcom comes in and makes aiming with WASD a thing. Like, bruh.
Gamecube version was using both digital (cross key) and analog aiming (analog sticks). My guess is they wanted to preserve this digital aiming with WASD keys.
This game is so good that this was the first version I ever played of the game and I absolutely loved it. All I had at the time was a really weak PC that could run Ultimate HD. Guess it helped I was aware of the issues prior so I had context for the pre rendered cutscenes and lack of controller prompts for the QTEs; instead of thinking this was inherint to the game. IIRC there are mods for it as well that made it a better experience than the base PC port that helped. So it wasn't all that bad. But the core experience is still there in full and I'm glad this version existed just so I was able to play before I had a devices that could run a proper port (and the remake).
Yes, this was my first version of RE4 I played. Yes, I played it with keyboard. Yes I became very good with the crappy keyboard controls. Yes, I have the installation disk still on my shelf. Yes, this version made me fall in love with RE4.
I was trying to remember what it was like playing this for the first time and this video reminded me that I was one of the poor souls who completed this on keyboard only 😂
The PC port looks like some of those very early software PC ports of PS1 games, with no hardware acceleration whatsoever, where you got a token higher resolution but lost half of the graphics effects and ended up with something that looked far worse overall...
The PC version is how I imagined the PS2 version might look, yet the PS2 version seems to maintain a lot of the original NGC art style. I think it is more crazy that they have clearly rerendered all the cutscene videos using the PC assets.
Ah, played the crap out of my PS2 copy back in the day. Simply loved it. Same gameplay as GC, stable fps and tight controls were enough to make it a great game. Maybe Capcom could do better with this port, was still OK. But then came the PC port... 😅
Probably worth mentioning that this is the _original_ PC version. The 2014 _Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition_ rerelease is massively improved over this original 2007 port. Combined with the incredible HD Project mod, it's arguably the best way to play the original now.
fun fact, the US retail version of the 2007 port is actually ships pre-patched, the lighting and color grading is def better but the opaque loot drop + laser sight, and wrong shading are still there
To me, even though the quality is low on the PS2 version, the colors and whichever effect is being applied to it is better than all these versions. I actually experienced RE4 for the first time on PS2. It was movie-like back then.
I'm not sure if part of it has to do with the capture, but It's so odd that all these versions have completely different lighting. It's a shame that the more yellowish and less dynamic PC version seems to be the basis for the newer ports of the game. (at least from what I can remember.) However, the HD project fixes this by adding a color filter that more accurately potrays the GameCube lighting. (It's Color Filter 1 in the settings after installing the mod) I recommend everyone turn it on if you're going to play the game on PC with the HD Project, it makes the game look so much better.
I just checked out the 2014 PC port for a refresher, it's pretty nice and mostly in line with the GCN version in terms of things like tree leaves and fog. The deadzone on the controller is still pretty poor though.
@@TyroneCLove 40 hours for one playtrough?!? Did you slowly walk trough the game and get stuck a lot? Not trying to be rude, i just can't think of any other way you would reach 40 hours, the Original is pretty much the same length as the remake.
@@maxxam181 Honestly no, just explored a lot. Maybe it was 30h but not less. I remember it was even the only criticism some outlets had about the game back then, saying it overstayed its welcome. and I remember being disappointed by re5 being so short when it came out. Re4 was a very long game guys.
