Yeah, he was right about the whole Mandela Effect thing: the devs put a lot of effort into ensuring that she wouldn't be a pain in the ass like pretty much every "escort NPC" before the game. I hope whoever had the idea of making her automatically duck when you aimed in her direction got a raise.
If you hated Ashley, you’d probably throw the controller in rage playing SH2 &4. I don’t like escort missions as much as the next guy, but having her hide/wait/duck during a fight was a godsend back in 2004.
I normally dont mind escorting npcs, especially if theyre packing heat too, but i fucking hate ashley. I blew her up sooo many times with the rocket launcher, lol. She makes good bait for enemies in her armor, but otherwise i wished she die early and let me play the game solo.
I don’t scare very easily but man I remember playing this game on the Cube way back in the day and pissing my pants every time I got to a new room and heard the staggered breathing of those regenerators
EA: Dead Space!? How about more online only focused soulless corporate crap! At least Village is getting dlc unlike RE3 Remake. Although, we don't know when they'll release and how much they cost too.
Blame Kojima for making Konami almost go bankrupt during his 2 years as VP, greenlighting insane budgets for games that flopped (most of them, his own). Konami literally CANT make a AAA game.
It is almost shocking how well this has held up; re-played it myself a few months back and it truly is one of the greatest games ever made. I get the argument that it took RE in a different direction, but just by itself, it’s just so amazingly well-made and so friggen fun EDIT: also, best inventory system of all time
The thing that made me so willing to accept this game (and give it a chance early on) was specifically because of the inventory system. With a bad inventory system this game might have gone the other way.
yeah even playing it again (after the 20th time) on PC before the big remake comes out. Second playthrough on professional now, will always stay in my personal fav top 10
Honestly, I'd argue that a game's impact on the rest of the franchise isn't relevant in a review of the game itself. That says more about the games following this than this game, imo.
WAIT WAIT It's literally just occurred to me that Leon must have contacted Hunnigan whilst he's speedboating away from the Island. He's telling her he's just rescued the subject and is returning home. That means Leon just straight up asked for Hunnigan's number after just rejecting Ashley WHILST ASHLEY IS RIGHT THERE CLUTCHING ON TO HIS BACK. Straight savage.
I've played this game so many times... Watched so many reviews/retrospectives... And yet, when a creator I like posts a review about it? You bet your ass I'm going to join to reminisce. At the end of the day, probably my personal GOAT.
Ashley is the OG example when people talk about escort missions, but it's because the game was so important. Ashley is probably one of the best examples of how to do it right.
I originally played this on GameCube after purchasing a used game console from a local GameStop my last year in high school. As an N64 fan, I still have no idea why I waited so long to get in on GameCube (PS2 mainly), but GameCube had a treasure trove of games available with Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Mario Sunshine, etc. What a time to be alive. RE4 is a classic always and forever. Please Capcom don’t mess up the remake.
M celus912 ps2 and xbox were amazing as well. The last generation that had true killer app exclusives on all consoles. There's really no point in owning all 3 consoles nowadays but back then you had the likes of tekken, final fantasy, morrowind, halo, REmake, metroid prime 1 and 2...all on the list of best games of all time for people exclusive to a certain console.
@@alanlee67 absolutely. That really was a golden age for video games. I never had an Xbox, but PS2…FFX, GTA, God of War, Metal Gear Solid 2 and especially 3…absolute classics! I feel like game development has changed so much nowadays with the primary focus being commercial appeal. Which, it is what it is, at the end of the day, it’s a business. While I did enjoy RE8, I don’t think it will generate the same nostalgic feeling as RE4 several years from now.
Back in the day I bought the GameCube specifically because Capcom said that RE4 was going to be exclusive to that console. That's the only reason I bought. But it really was a great system. Ended up playing alot of games on it.
I think I like the developer idea of put a challenge at the very beginning of a game and if you can pass it, you can beat the whole game. Bloodborne was my first experience with that idea fighting father Gascoigne. But other games do it too. Much better than spending 20 or so hours to hit a brick wall making you give up.
Funny you mentioned it, because Capcom just announced they’re removing the “ballistics” line,, “how bout we do some overtime?” as well as looking up Ashley’s skirt in VR.
With the revelation that it was Facebook that was responsible for the censorship, I hope future re-releases of RE4 keep it in… especially since the Censorship makes Ashley look like a total asshole
@@omniscension8967 the part where he talks about her ballistics was cut but not her negative reaction to it so in the VR version Luis shows up and she immediately just goes off on him for no reason
I compare RE4 to Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy VII, and Breath of the Wild. Where developers are given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do to something new with an established, successful franchise, and they go absolutely fucking nuts. They cut loose with their imagination and go way above and beyond what has gone before in terms of content, production values, structure, design, everything, and forge ahead with the kind of assured confidence and financial muscle that only a franchise with a substantial built-in fanbase can provide. They go the extra mile, because they're on an unprecedented, literally game-changing roll. It doesn't happen often, but it's almost always special. RE4 is an all-time great that is required playing for anyone who loves game design.
For me, it's all about milking the mechanics as to why people who love game design should play RE4. Mainly because throughout the game if you're not interacting with something with the action button, you're shooting, knifing, or throwing a grenade at it. And it's in shooting, knifing, and grenading interactable objects that truly lend the game its depth.
@@thelegendofthem6120 Not so much, he has some right addictions but not all of them true, for example RE 4 ruined RE franchise, and it was not the game changer there was Gta and other games before THAT changed the game industry forever in a good way then it went bad with the 2017-2021's games but there are still good games at least.
i finally gave this game another chance and pushed past the awkward controls and im so glad i did. this is such a great game. and now that im used to the controls i cant stop playing it 😂
@@neurohack9038 The controls are awkward for many people who try it for the first time nowadays because most 3rd person games in recent years don't control like RE4 does. In RE4 you can't strafe, you can't move while aiming, and the camera is more restricted than in many newer 3rd person games. Those differences can take some getting used to.
I love the first fight in the village, just cause in one quick cinematic it tells fans of the old games: “Remember everything you’ve learned in past games? Yeah, none of that works here. Here’s twenty enemies at a time that can coordinate and go anywhere you do. Oh, and one of them has a chainsaw. Have fun!”
I liked the horror in the first DEAD Space and silent hill horror more than Resident Evil but I love the action as long as its RE4, RE3 type of action.
I think you should give it a shot on Evil Within, it has a lot in common with RE 4 and the weapons are just too fun to use, the sequel to it is just perfect, it's a big open area for you to explore and lots of stuff to collect and some pretty horrendous monsters
In every RE boss there’s a “trick” to defeat, & even knowing that is a trick. As this was my 1st RE game I didn’t know that. So after dying to Gigante the first time, I maxed out all my ammo, health etc. After an epic 20-45 minute battle, every hut demolished, all ammo gone, all health gone, in my still most bravest gaming moment, I charged it with just my knife, and then popped up a banner that said “cut the growth on it’s back”, and it was “ooooooh, that’s what you need to do to defeat it!”
I'm quite surprised you haven't played The Evil Within it's IMO one of the greatest horror games of all time, great atmosphere, sound design, enemy design and it's full of RE references! and it's not easy! You should give it a go sometime it will probably surprise you :) and great review for this game!
The music in this game is legendary. I agree, but the the castle always did and still to this day creeps me out especially with the music. Re4 will always be in my top favorite games.
Lmao Gothic 2 has a similar Easter Egg - if you swim too far away from the harbor, you get Gobbled up by a Leviathan-like creature. Nice video btw - the only RE game I played was the third one on the PS1 back in the day, but I sure enjoyed your take on 4!
Yay to more Mercenaries content, boo to yet another lame multiplayer only game. A proper Outbreak or Operation Raccoon City game or nothing multiplayer from Capcom again.
The quick time events in Resident Evil 4 are perfect, there implemented into the gameplay smoothly and the few that are in cutscenes are really just there to keep you paying attention and active
I don't care. There are no good quick time events for me. If you want me to watch the cutscene & pay attention, do it through good dialogue, story, or voice acting. QTEs are incredibly annoying.
Bro…. Since 2005 and 4 remasters, 30+ play through and I still love it. Always hop on again playing new game professional. Too good of a game that the remake better not fuck up on. Don’t let it be like RE3. Don’t cut shit it and keep to its roots like RE2 remake
I got a Nintendo Gamecube for this and Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes. Discovered Resident Evil Remake. Don't sleep on the Cube. Excellent system with an excellent library.
Devs: This new RE game is in a completely different style and has nothing to do with the rest of the series. Capcom: Good point. Rebrand it as Devil May Cry. Devs: This new RE game is in a completely different style and has nothing to do with the rest of the series. Capcom: Just make Leon the main character and release it anyway.
i know the remake was later but i LOVE how near the first regenerator all you hear is the breathing, and very low ambient music, people who played re4 original would tense up like i did, and maybe people who never played the original
Funny he says that Capcom shouldn't change or censor quotes, as the RE4 VR does immediately. I think it's safe to say that we won't ever see this from games anymore.
The track that starts playing at 11.30 is probably my favourite video game song ever. It’s so fucking cool. It’s scary, it’s unsettling, it fills you with adrenaline, it’s weird. Such a cool track. I bet any other game would have typical action music playing, not this.
I don't know what you meant by "Amnesia and Penumbra returned that feeling of helplessness" when you literally are all powerful in every Resident Evil game.
@@isaywhateveriwantandyougot7421 I actually don't mind that. There's a charm to campy stuff from the past. 10 year old me just hated any game with tank controls and fixed camera angles. I think REmake is decent though.
@@Guanjyn a lot of sources claim that the camera angles were inspired by Hitchcock movies. Just by hearing that statement, I have my doubts that the creators have EVER seen a Hitchcock movie.
You simply had to be there. My only experience with Resi back in the 90's was seeing that cover art for the original game, and playing the opening level of RE2 at my uncle's place. Only when I got the Gamecube in 2002, I had to buy REmake, because it looked out of this world. It was one of the greatest video game experiences for me. A year later, I bought RE0, liked it a lot, and then 2, 3 and CVX came out on Gamecube. Bought them, loved them all. When RE4 was announced, I was worried about the change in gameplay and perspective. Yet, I bought it on day 1. And it's still one of my most vivid gaming memories. It fastly became my favorite game of all time, even to this day, and I replay it once a year. RE5 was a disappointment for me, but the game grew on me with every subsequent playthrough, and I really like it now. I guess the abomination that was RE6 helped a little with my view of RE5 ^^ A little correction: it's definitely Spain, because they namedrop Madrid in the game, so there is no ambiguity.
I always like this game in the series the most, because it gave Visceral the inspiration for Dead Space. Which is one of my favorite games to ever come out of EA when they a had spell of risk taking and encouraged developers to just throw stuff against the wall and see what sticks.
I remember being insanely scared of the village part in re4 cause it felt so real. Reminds me a lot of those mid 2000's horror flicks like hills have eyes and texas chainsaw massacre.
Resident evil 4 was at the start anyway a GameCube exclusive, I believe it got a release a year early from all other consoles which I think it only got those other console releases because of how popular it was, I know it was my first resident evil game and rated m game I ever played
21:24 I honestly thought that was someone imitating Phil for being trash at every game, but it was ACTUALLY Phil playing. Dsp was born to createTIHYDP content
I think Dr. Salvador would make a better pursuer then Mendez. Imagine having to constantly avoid him with only the sound of his chainsaw engine to warn you he’s approaching!
Great work my guy! I really enjoy the super chill narrative and how much detail you put in each section of the video. Personally I have not play this game since my last play through and that was almost a decade ago. Partly because it used to scare the shit out of me not gonna lie. I am super excited about the upcoming remake and I believe that if done right it could be one of the greatest games of all time, after all they already have such a great blueprint to follow. The only thing I probably disagree (if I can even call it that) is that my favorite section was the village. There is something very eerie and fitting on the RE franchise about a village of innocent people turned into relentless monsters that just feels right. I liked the castle, but that’s definitely where I started feeling as if RE because a little more action packed than before. Keep it up man, I am always on the lookout for your videos!
I've replayed Resident Evil 4 countless times. And every time I get to the island, I wanna commit sudoku. I hate the island. Easily the worst part of the game.
17:26 I never once had a problem with Ashley and I'm glad the author of this video brought that up. Ashley stays firmly in the Player's control and is always near Leon. She ducks so that Leon's bullets don't hit her and can be put in Hiding Spots if you do your due diligence as the Player to explore the map. She's pretty much as inoffensive of a companion escort as you could have, and they did it all the way back in 2005. If people find her annoying, they've never played the original Dead Rising 😭 She's made a bit annoying on purpose so that the Player knows where she is. That's just good Game Design and smart use of Audio Cues. Ashley has always been a well Designed Escort Character.
Currently doing my first VR playthrough of re4 and man this is awesome. This is also my first VR experience and I don't think I could have chosen a better first game.
@46:18 When fans say "You can cut this and that" from Remakes it always gets me worried. When a game is know to be called a masterpiece nothing should be cut out altogether imo. Changed and re-worked maybe?
Hey Boulder punch a couple things 1: I thoroughly enjoy your videos and would say you are definitely deserving of the title most under rated youtuber. 2: The music choice you use from the games is impeccable, from save room themes to title screen music your implementation is perfect. 3: I really think you should try The Evil Within, I am a huge fan of survival horror plus RE and Silent Hill, I think that game is amazing one of my favorites to return to and would love to see you do a analysis of it. Thanks for another great video and keep up the outstanding work!
i think that line on ashley is stupid, she seems like barely legals, its creepy, would be funnier if he tried it on Ada and she just round house kicks him with a flirty line back
Shubham Raj I hope it’s not the one they used for re2. I really don’t like that face for him. Something closer to present day Jensen ackles- his face is a lot less infuriating these days and he has the eyes
I'm playing through this for the first time and I'm starting to come around on it. I did not like it at first. At all. It was mostly the brown everything and peculiar aiming controls. But once it turned night after the lake fight I started to really enjoy it. I'm currently fighting my way through the castle having a good ol time. Man, is the semi auto rifle satisfying to use.
This is my favorite RE title, my proper first RE game. I played it back in 2006 too, replayed it several times and beated in the hardest difficulty. I even played both PS2 and GameCube versions. But it is until TODAY that I discover that Luis can kill you if you shoot him many times lol.
@Gibram Rivera Holy shit man it’s called an opinion you don’t have to write 5 different paragraphs because I don’t like RE4 as a Resident Evil game jeez
@Gibram Rivera Well ofc the games were actiony but RE4 legit just made you a goddamn superhero in the old games the horror comes from resource management and the enemies that makes you think about strategy
@Gibram Rivera I don’t have anything to say about CV but in my opinion RE1, 2 and 3 (plus RE1make) are some of best survival horror games and are my personal favourite RE games and while yes they got actiony in cutscenes the core gameplay is still the same and RE4 while it’s a very good game as a RE game it basically has nothing in common with the core gameplay anc it’s because of RE4 that the series was let astray until 7 brought back the classic gameplay
@Gibram Rivera 4 has the elements but they feel like an afterthought in RE4 apart from the action Also RE7 was great imo seriously what’s wrong with First Person? But hey to each his own
