This game has a really promising concept. The backstory of Umbrella persuading and luring children in by taking them to arcades and amusement parks only to abduct them to use for experiments is utterly horrifying and could be done justice with a reimagining.
I LOVE the fact that he has to say his whole name "Leon S. Kennedy" as though people couldn't put 2 and 2 together if he just said "Leon" or better yet, refer to him by him middle name "Scott" so they can then come up with a convoluted reason why Leon used his middle name for some time.
Unironically, I want that hypothetical fanfiction remake that Suzi described. I legit want that, considering I thought Ark's amnesia *thing* as gaslighting himself into the villainous role was incredibly compelling. One of those "blind squirrel finding a nut" things, and having it executed better would be incredibly cool, especially if we're doubling down on how dark Sheena Island's lore really is. Sheena Island as a Tyrant production facility interests me. Just imagine multiple pursuers with different abilities chasing you. One uses weapons so don't fight it, one flys so avoid roofs and open areas, and one's electric so avoid facing it in water. This alone can carry an RE game.
I have so much nostalgia for this game! When I was 7-8 I met my best friend at school and the 1st time I spent the night at his place he put this game on and we played it all night but didn't beat it. Every time I went over we always got a lil bit further until the day came and we actually beat the game. Those sleep overs were some of my fondest childhood memories and its all thank to this game! My best friend isn't with us anymore and it just makes those memories more precious. Thanks for giving this game the spotlight it deserves!

Love seeing this deep dive into Survivor, Suzi. Have you watched Noah Caldwell-Gervais' "Thorough Look at Resident Evil" video? He spends about 8 minutes (out of a 7.5-hour video) on Survivor and I love how he summarized the politics of making a lightgun game with the lightgun redacted after the Columbine tragedy: "Thank you, Capcom USA, for making this low-effort zombie shooter more awkward out of respect for our national tragedy. While it might have meant more to pull the game altogether, this half-hearted gesture has united us in healing during our time of crisis." Priceless.

When I was much younger I begged my dad for a japanese copy before it came to the states. Somehow we managed to get one. I honestly loved this game when I was a kid. It was my favorite RE cause it was the only one I could beat without a gameshark or cheats lol
it holds up VERY well. Like, all the gripes I had over it went away very quickly with how fun the lightgun gameplay actually is. The closest I'd put it at is an archaic version of RE4 Wii
It does not hold up, trust me.. Playing Survivor with the GunCon is terrible, the control layout is really bad and confusing, playing the game like that is way harder than with the standard controller. But, playing Dead Aim with the GunCon 2 is a blast, the controls are perfect, I'll never play Dead Aim again using the normal controller.

I love that I can stick to any of the mainline RE titles and I'm in good hands...and yes, that includes Code Veronica, RE0 and the Revelations titles! I've attempted the spin off stuff. From Outbreak to Operation Raccoon City, to watching videos about this game. The thing I see in common with all of them is this...WOW does Resident Evil LOVE to revisit locations from it's early titles! How many labs and Mr. X's and Tyrants and Nemesis's can one fight!?! I haven't played Survivor, admittedly, but it looks like a repeat of all of the stuff that exists within the first three games. I definitely will never love this game for one very simple reason. I HATE the idea of multiple Mr. X's. Tyrants is one thing...but X had style! I will probably one day play all the spin off RE games just for the f*ck of it, but I ain't hoping for much! I still think that RE, as a series, is going very strong! There is no less than 12 entries that wear the brand well...15 if you include originals and REmakes!
I remember when i was a kid, I played a game that was called “Resident Evil 4” on the box, but looked like Survivor, while not being Survivor either, cause first level was some kind of a morgue, i think. Videogame piracy was kinda crazy in Ukraine in early2000s, so I spent like 6 years telling ppl that “sure I played resident evil 4” without realizing I just played some cheap crap that had RE stamped on it.
Kinda reminds me of the time there was a pirated game out on the bootleg market that claims to be a port of Counter-Strike on the PS1. Turns out it was an obscure, Wolfenstein-esque Japanese PS1 game called EXPERT. I love it when pirates get "creative".

Honestly, I kind of like the use of fake names, reused RE2 assets, and bad acting combined with a game that has arguably one of the darkest and most messed-up stories in the franchise. It gives Survivor this creepy sort of exploitation film vibe, like one of those cheap dubbed OVA's or direct-to-video horror flicks from the 80's and 90's.
Bought Survivor day-one and, of the entire series, I think I've replayed it more than any other entry outside of RE4. It's terrible, I recognized that within 2 minutes of playing it, but I'll be damned if the weird, super jankiness of it didn't have some charming appeal that made me love it and come back to it over and over.
Yup. There is something about the jank that I love. Like....I know it's a "bad" game. But I love it. Takes me an hour to blitz through the whole thing. And it's a ton of fun.
The year is 2005, I was in 6th grade in school. Dad bought me my first ever PS1, the one with curved corners. It was jailbroken, he bought me like 20 something games. One among them was Resident Evil Gun Survivor. Unlike nearly entirety of the RE fanbase, my first RE game that actually made me a fan was Gun Survivor. Me and my brother literally cheesed the game on hard difficulty we loved it so damn much. As someone who had no idea about the existence of a Resident Evil 1, 2 or 3 in 2005 because we didn't have a PC and internet connection at that time was highly intrigued by the game and the world it built. I was always excited about what comes next. But later on as years passed by, i got a PC, internet, played a few more RE games to realise the big picture - i could never and still don't dislike RE Gun Survivor in anyway - I fucking love every bit of this game, if not for this I would've never fell in love with RE.
I swear it feels amazing that Survivor is being covered for the fact that no one knew what I was talking about when I was trying to describe this game as best as I could. I played this game when I was a kid and the memory was hazy, I just remembered it was an fps. Darkside Chronicles is what triggered my memory. It felt like, 'I felt like I played a game like this before.'
I was so pumped to get this game back in high school simply because it was another RE game. To be honest, I actually enjoyed it. It has a certain charm to it. There is so much content and replay-ability in this game. If they would have actually put any effort into this it could have been so much better. I just would like the next spinoff game to be set on the island that Ark, Carlos, Sheeva, and Billy Cohen are stuck on!

Back then I played a pirated version of this with FULL Russian translation. Yes, even voicelines were in pure Russian. The pirate scene was kinda wild if you think about it, we only had pirated games available for PS1 and each disk was 50 rubles or 2$ at that time. Pirates those days did more effort than legit publishers now. Fully translated games, at least the text was, and RE 2 and 3 had Russian voiceover as well. I actually liked the game back then, seeing monsters from classic RE in first person felt really cool and novel, didn't mind the control scheme but no saves was kinda lame.
I'd actually really like to see a reinterpretation of the story of Survivor. Playing as an Umbrella scientist fleeing a facility while being hunted by the products of your own unethical experiments would be a super compelling plot. It's too rare that you actually get to play as an amoral character, and that could be incredibly immerisive, considering how well RE can be at creating oppressive, overwhelming dread in their locales. Great work as always, looking forward to the next one.
Your experiences were identical to mine: I got Survivor as a fan back in the day, beat it in one sitting and hated it, returning it the next day and getting something else instead. I came back to it years later with a lot more patience and appreciation for what it brought to the franchise, as well as being more entertained by its goofy nature than taking offense to it. I love the sheer amount of content it has, how you can amass and arsenal of weapons and collect a bundle of files through three playthroughs. It's such a unique game that, yes, could definitely benefit from getting a rework. Thanks so much for making this video and giving Survivor some of the respect it deserves. Too many people just dismiss the game based on popular opinion when there's a fun little gem hidden beneath all the vitriol.
I'll never forget renting this one as a kid, beating most of the game in like 45 minutes, then having to spend another 30 minutes (or what felt like that) on the final boss because all I had left was pistol ammo. Good memories

TBH I'd love a remake for this game. Me personally, I didn't think RE 4 needed a remake or reimagining. It was masterful on its own. But to get to explore raccoon city in ways that the @RE3make was supposed to give us would be awesome. Which is why I wish they would remake outbreak. With those characters and stories, it doesn't come off as cheesey. Plus we get to see zombie animals in rare form. Heck before and RE 4 I'd like to have seen a remake to Survival, along with Dead Aim and possibly Gaiden. I don't mind seeing a Leon parred with Barry either. Just so many options why remake a game thats damn near perfect as is. 😕

I thought this was Resi 4 for the longest time. (I was a kid when resident evil was coming out and English wasn’t my mother tongue). I had beaten resident evil 3 at that point and I borrowed this from my friend who told me this was resident evil 4. Didn’t play resi 4 until like a year or two after it had come out and kept telling everyone how much Resi 4 sucked compared to the originals :D Something similar happened to me again when I had only played PC version of Spider-Man 2 and every time I heard people praise Spider-Man 2 as one of the best superhero games ever I’d be like “well, they must not have played any good games” :D PC version is laughably bad and completely different from the console versions. Who knew :D
9:55 The best way to deal with hunters in this game is to run up against the wall and maneuver while facing the wall, they can't jump in front of you and they won't attack you unless you look at them

I know most RE villains have their OTT qualities but they tried too hard to make Vincent super evil and it made him seem comical. "Oh he cuts out kids brains to create T-103 Tyrants and shot and killed the ones who tried to escape the prison." And the game being all "He's so evil even the Umbrella higher ups want him gone." I doubt Umbrella, the company founded by an old man who wanted to be a god leading a race of superhumans, had his 2 co founders killed just to get more power in the company, trapped the architect who built his mansion in said mansion where he starved to death, used the architect's wife and daughter as test subjects which killed Jessica and left Lisa a childlike creature who wanted her mother, a company that took advantage of a citywide outbreak partly caused by them trying to steal the new virus a scientist of theirs made to send in the T-103 to get the G-Virus sample and send the Nemesis in to get back at STARS for destroying their mansion research. I doubt they cared that one of their employees killed kids they only considered experiments.
This might be a headcanon but I think part of why Umbrella wanted Vincent gone was because Spencer saw the potential Vincent had and wanted him gone, fearing a repeat of William Birkin, especially so soon after Raccoon City happened.

Oddly enough, the story structure of this game is exactly what I want from RE9. Meaningful options throughout the game affecting equipment, NPCs met, plot points discovered...
As flawed as this game is, there is something about the atmosphere i really enjoy and always captivated me since i was a kid. I dont know if it was intentional, but the first person view along with the places you visit and the lack or music (though i did miss the dead bodies to add to the ambiance like in RE2 and 3) gives the game a very immersive and desolate feeling, almost like those retro indie horror walking simulators you can find on steam. I always thought it was an actual hood and underrated aspect of this game.
Finally somebody else who says it, the blackness of the surroundings might be a consecuence of the low budget, but this game gives me the most uncomfortable feeling of isolation of the classic games
I actually was thinking about the possibility of a Survivor sometime ago, but I feel like it wouldn't be able to stand on its own without vastly stretching out the plot, so I think it would have to be a DLC add-on to another game. Since Code Veronica also takes place on a remote island owned by Umbrella and both games are set in late 1998, that would probably be our best bet.
I'm very late to this conversation, but growing up, my dad and I would play RE on ps1 and GameCube all the time. He got me into gaming in general. My mom, on the other hand, could not play for the life of her. The only RE game she could ever finish on her own was Survivor. She absolutely loved it for that reason. So, for me, as critiqued as Survivor is, I will always hold the game close to my heart. It was really amazing for my dad and I to watch my mom beat this game on her own and all her excitement about it. I don't know if anyone else has an experience like mine, but I had to share. The game doesn't get a lot of real discussion. Thanks for making so many great videos on one of the greatest video game series of all time!!

I personally like the intro and the end with you on screen, like the one in RE4 too, i dont know, it feels more professional and personal at the same time if that makes any sense. It’s a very derivative game, as befits its arcade like nature, but can’t even make that exciting like the finest examples of the general. Even the retelling of Code Veronica (mostly to serve the ends of the Krauser/Leon plot) in Darkside Chronicles is better.
I'll never forget my first play through of this game... Finished it within a little over an hour and a half. Got an A rank. Started the next play through and realized that Triangle let's you run. Realized I blind ran through this game walking and almost did it perfectly lol.
Right on the aim button! She accurately pointed out how this becomes a great game in the future. After the release of RE7 & VILLage, going back and replaying this title, you can really appreciate the risk and initiative CAPCOM took on making this game. I lived in the Philippines when this came out as Biohazard: Gun Surivor, the Japanese release before Code Veronica just 5 days right after and boy was it more scarier than your usual third person Classic RE game. The multi path selection of the game branching over pseudo changes in the scenario and overall story is nothing new thanks to Resident Evil 2’s 2 disc feature but it is welcome to fans of that game but as a fan of Resident Evil 2 we all know there’s only 1 absolute canon story. That goes the same with RE: Surviror. Reviews in that era are bombing the game due to the unconventional first person risk Capcom took and because players aren’t used to that system yet but relating this in the present really makes you appreciate that said initiative and risk. Thank you for shining a light off this game. It deserves more than what all of the classic tank control third person game era reviewers has given it.
if they do remake it they should at least give some form of reason as to how Ark is friends with Leon, like a flashback to when him and Leon are in Police Training and became good friends in during their time at the academy and after graduating they still kept in touch through Email and perhaps the "request" was made by Leon when he discovered the truth and wanted Ark to gather more evidence to prove it was umbrella behind everything and take them to court for what they did.
The games depicting violence have always been there (kids have for millennia acted out fights, wrestled, played strategic games etc.) The guns have always been there (semi automatic/fully automatic function, accurate, reliable, and power rifles/handguns with detachable magazines have been commonly available since the 1920s-1930's when we didn't fear this occurring) There are many things that go into these horrific events, but video games and firearms do not cause them to occur. They may be used by these disturbed individuals, but cannot control the actions of an individual. They are merely conduits for what is already there. Modern Warfare 2 lobbies didn't put the hate in you, You brought the hate out.
Columbine even happened during the Assault Weapons Ban that anti-gun people are dying to bring back. They just wanted to pass even more gun laws. The media is probably more to blame than any other entity. There's a lot research showing how their handling of these events directly causes more, and they change nothing. They want them to happen.

Survivor will always have special place in my heart. I know its not considered a real RE Game to most fans. But its the first horror game I've ever beaten by my self. This personal achievement felt like a right of passage.

I feel like in recent years, I've come to actually enjoy things that are bad, and that's the vibe I get with Survivor if I ever get around to playing it. Like, I'd be able to acknowledge that it's bad, but how bad it is would be the source of my entertainment XD I hope what I'm saying here makes sense.
I have really mixed feelings of this game. I remember watching my brother playing it during the time we had our PSX, but it wasn't until like late 2020 when I first got to play it myself... and it hate it. It's a weird combination of a traditional Resident Evil game and House of the Dead that is super awkward to play. And yet, as I replayed it to see the other paths and unlock the infinite rocket launcher the game really started to grow on me. It certainly has its charm, and I won't mind it getting a remake that flesh out the story and improves the gameplay. Amazing video as always. Your RE videos are a nice trip though the series story.

As an outsider to the US (I’m English) it’s baffling and deeply upsetting to see how twisted gun culture is in America. The fact that mass shootings are a regular occurrence is genuinely maddening to witness. I love American culture like action movies but the reverence given to firearms is unsettling when you look at it. As a country that was forged on the back of firearms more than most, it’s somewhat understandable but definitely needs to be addressed properly. Anyway, this was another great review of a game I rented once and didn’t much care for. Keep up the great work!
The only definition I saw from the FBI for mass shooting is three or more people injured and according to their statistics one happens every three days. Obviously the public attacks that killed dozens are far less often but still too often. Usually, they are carried out by incels that think they are owed things they aren't and are incredibly hostile but not often openly. The amount of people who are under the mistaken belief that a gun is going to help most situations is a little worrying. They either hesitate and have the weapon taken from them or they are overly aggressive towards people and shoot people when they don't need to. In the case of mass shooters a lot of them commit suicide when they run out of ammo long before anybody has a chance to shoot them. Even when cops are nearby they tend to hesitate far too long to do anything useful.
Our gun culture is fine. This is a mental health issue through and through. We had shotguns and hunting rifles in our trucks back windows up till the 90s and school shooting just weren't a thing then.

@@dragonbornexpress5650 its 100% fine. We have more guns then people and if you remove what is essentially a handful of cities homocide rates are comparable to western Europe. We had guns in our trucks in school up until the late 90s and school shootings didnt become a thing till later. Gun culture didnt change mental health did. Blasting the news everytime a shooting happens with information on the shooting etc.. Helps make copy cats.
since l am not smart enough to put into words properly please take this as a good thing. for the last few years l have not been sleeping well due to stress, l do watch all your videos while awake, but your voice has such a calming effect that when l go to bed l listen to your videos and it has helped me sleep, my blood pressure is down and l am more relaxed. I don't know about the original Gun Survivor, but the Chronicles Games were actually pretty damn cool. I loved playing those back in the day. Umbrella Chronicles, the first one, was actually pretty hard for what it was. Never got old though.
Yeah. I was always a bit curious about how the chronical games expanded upon the original game stories, but unfortunately I never had the opportunity to play them.
i rented survivor from a mom and pop rental shop around the time it came out, my friend and i played it all weekend nonstop and actually found it refreshing , we both liked first person shooters at the time and getting a first person RE game was pretty cool
as a person who was around back then when this game first came out and remembers all the hubbub about it I actually am glad to see this game be put in a more positive light and as always it is great to see you regardless of what you are wearing
