The lady in the beginning is Lolita Lebron, who fired 3 shots in the middle of Congress in 1954 to denounce the colonization of Puerto Rico. The man murdered is Victor Jara, from Chile who was assassinated after having his fingers cut off and forced to play his guitar, during the coup. His crime was singing songs of protest. The man on fire is the young ,man who was set on fire by police. The references to Starbucks and Amazon is these companies have bought thousands of acres of land by displacing indigenous people. The reference to the navy, the US navy held training with live ammo on the Puerto Rican island of Vieques and shot over people's homes. the 5 presidents in 11 days happened in Argentina when their president basically walked off leaving the country in dire financial situation. There's a lot but it's all true. And there are English subtitles to it.

every single scene in that video clip is a representation of a true historic event in Latin America, gruesome as it is, it is the truth, you cannot imagine how relevant this is, even the last reference to the great Victor Jara, as he was executed in a soccer stadium by the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile is something that we ALL latin americans, from Mexico all the way down to Argentina simply cannot avoid getting goosebumps over. and in this clip, there is not one second wasted, everything you saw is a direct reference to something as significant as that. cheers for reacting to it, and a shoutout from the LATAM community, love your reactions, keep up the good work man!

Yes, AMERICA is a CONTINENT made up of different countries and different ancient cultures that were in these lands before the United States became a country. It is frustrating how the United States came to try to "monopolize" the name "America" to refer to that country, because by doing so it's as if you'll were trying to ignore or erase its ancient heritage, customs and traditions. That is what Residente wants to express in the song.

Some references: The song is in response to Childish Gambino for his song "This is America". America is a whole continent and not just the USA. The image at the beginning makes an apology for an artistic work by Chilean Alfredo Jaar exhibited on 5th Avenue in New York (This is not America). The woman who shoots is Lolita Lebron, (Puerto Rican activist who went to Congress in 1954 and demonstrated for the liberation of Puerto Rico, was imprisoned for 24 years). The essence of the video is to say that before the gringos ancestors came to invade, there were already cultures here, developed civilizations and they were exterminated, but even so, here we are, we did not leave, we do not leave. Now, the machete is a work tool that is linked to slavery but is also used as a symbol of uprising, of struggle and rebellion against the abuse of the boss, in this case of the governments of each Latin country. The woman who breastfeeds through the fence alludes to the families separated on the northern border of Mexico. The Peruvian revolutionary Túpac Amaru, an indigenous leader who rose up in times of Spanish colonization and was dismembered using horses, the missing students happened in Mexico 43 male students was taken by cops and were all murdered, also talks about the dead and disappeared during OPERATION CONDOR (state political and anti-communist repression campaign created by the United States that included intelligence operations and assassinations of opponents in almost all of America). The execution of Víctor Jara, a Chilean singer-songwriter who fought for the people and was tortured and murdered in 1973 by the Pinochet dictatorship. The women with balaclavas are from the Zapatista indigenous women's movement in the State of Chiapa (Mexico), The shirtless tattooed men are Central American gangs like "La Marasalvatrucha" emerged from the lack of opportunities in Central American countries. The one who wipes his mouth with the flag is the President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro (for the burning of the Amazon rainforest to turn it into pasture for cattle and crops). It mentions 5 presidents in 11 days, it happened in Argentina in 2001 (the banks kept the people's savings and there was a revolt that expelled the president), it also shows the protests in Venezuela against the dictatorial regime of Nicolas Maduro, including the protestant that they burned in the middle of the march, in the same way the mobilizations in Colombia in 2021 against the government of Iván Duque where the Police cruelly murdered young people, left others blind and raped protestant women. The black woman dressed in colors is a palenquera, a representative fruit seller of Cartagena Colombia. Throughout the video you see the presence of transnational brands that sell garbage to Latinos. Finally, the statue of liberty replaced by the figure of a native aboriginal chief and the Aztec temple in the middle of the city accentuate the idea of the video, we were here first.

For my people from the US let me help y'all out with a bit of context from a Peruvian American. This video shows the brutal reality of the consequences of colonialism from Europe and imperialism at the hands of the US government and companies which have left our countries and communities broken. Residente is basically not only saying to remember that the United States is not the only America but that the land of this entire continent is and that the indigenous communities in the US and every country on this continent are the ones still suffering. (examples of companies which exploit and hurt us/the land are "mcdonalds, coke, and Starbucks seen in the video). Basically ever visual in this is a reference to historical events, or people (famous politician, activists etc) throughout a variety of countries. Its not a song throwing shade at Gambino's This is America but more like expanding on his concept. For my Americans and non latino/ indigenous folks I recommend reading Empires Worship by Greg Grandin and Open Veins of Latin America by Eduardo Galeano to become more aware of the harm our government (and unintentionally us) may do to those from latino/ indigenous communities. There is so much more but hope this helped!

First thing that needs to be corrected and the point of this video, hence the name of the song, NOT "THE AMERICAS", AMERICA plain and simple, the continent. The name of the continent was given by Americo Vespucci who never set foot in North America, or what today is The United States, so it would be a bit arrogant, to the least, that the part of the continent this piece of land got its name from doesn't get to use the name because the United States decided to call their country by that same name.

Hi Jamel. I have a request that I thought for sure you must have covered b4 but did a search and didn't see it. Watching this video is what reminded me of it. It's by Everlast (who was once part of a band called House of Pain.) The song is "What it's Like" and the version that comes up first, with him with his guitar is the video version that tells the story as he sings it. I used to cry everytime I heard it, as the strong visuals and truthful lyrics are so incredibly powerful. Thank you for all you do to spread love and peace and for keeping great music alive. 💜

This is an amazing exemplar of The History of America from the 1950s to present. Lolita Lebron, the Chilean guitarist and singer tortured and murdered by Pinochet. Migrants at the border today. Current brazilian president killing natives to give the land to cow farmers for money, while China and US take the wood 🪵. Goes to the students killed in Nicaragua like two years ago…the students that disappeared from Mexico, some were found death. Sooo it is just an expansion to Gambinos song. A lot of history.

too late but references here: It opens with a scene portraying the historical figure of Lolita Lebrón, a leader in Puerto Rico's independence movement, who attacked the U.S. Capitol in 1954 in an attempt to give full sovereignty to the island, followed by symbolic images of a vibrant culture surviving amidst social protests and the extermination of Indigenous peoples. The image of the Indigenous man pulled by four police officers refers to when the Spanish colonizers attempted to dismember Tupac Amaru with horses in 1781. Forced migration of families towards the United States is also referenced in the video, with a mother breastfeeding her child who has been separated from her due to U.S. immigration policy. Central Americans fleeing gang violence - represented by people with tattoos - are also seen on Mexico's side of the U.S. border wall in Tijuana. The fresh twist is that gang members are shown as victims, refugees, and fervent Catholics rather than through their reputation of being “animals,” a dehumanizing term. It also makes reference to something that actually happened in Argentina, where they wouldn't let a mother cross a fence to be with her family, and she had to breastfeed her child through the holes in the fence during an assault to several houses. The women wearing black hoods over their faces represent the Indigenous Zapatista political movement in Mexico. The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN for its acronym in Spanish) took control of southern parts of Mexico, in Chiapas, to install an Indigenous-led libertarian socialist government. For many, the Zapatistas have become an example of the Indigenous and peasant struggle for self-determination as these groups have been the most historically marginalized on the continent. The scene where there's a bunch of young people with headshots is making a reference to 43 students murdered by the goverment from Ayotzinapa in México. A large segment is dedicated to the juxtaposition of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro eating a steak and wiping his mouth on the Brazilian flag while an Amazonian Indigenous child watches him. In Brazil, Indigenous peoples have denounced Bolsonaro for committing genocide against their populations by encouraging the accelerated deforestation of the Amazon forest for industrial crops and pastures to raise cows for meat consumption. The guy that was shot while playing guitar is a reference to Victor Jara, a teacher and musician from Chile whom was tortured and murdered simply for refusing to stop playing his music. There is also a significant critique of U.S. companies throughout the video, particularly making reference to megacorporations like Starbucks, Amazon, and McDonald's. Indigenous children in traditional attire interact with Western companies - such as the Amazonian child throwing away boxes of what looks like Jeff Bezos’ Amazon company. Another child is filmed eating a burger. Western fast-food companies have “aggressively expanded” in Latin America, “contributing to obesity and health problems,". The burning stroller makes reference to yet another incident in Mexico with the daycare ABC where dozens of babies died burnt because of the insecure conditions of the place, with little to non consequence because the place was owned by a politician's relative.

1. The first girl who came out shooting was a real event in the 50's she shot in the House of Representatives demanding the independence of Puerto Rico. 2. You can see the maras who are the tattooed boys, they are Central American gangs. 3. You will also see the student protests in Venezuela and Colombia when the police killed them. 4. The murdered singer was called Victor Jara and was murdered by the Pinochet dictatorship. 5. When he talks about 2pac and refers to Tupac Amaru, he was an Inca chief who was dismembered by horses. 6. You are going to see the migrants breastfeeding their child at the border with a fence in the middle and being chased by drones. 7. The masked women speak of the Zapatista National Liberation Movement, mostly peasants. 8. Also when you see the young people murdered in front of the university, he talks about 43 young people murdered with impunity in Mexico. 9. Our corrupt rulers have hurt us. 10. Indigenous children with boxes from amazon, mc donalds and starbucks, they have filled us with garbage. 11. The inequality of Brazil and the imbecile of the president who is selling the Amazon. 12. 5 presidents in 11days happened in Argentina. Thesong makes a reference to the fact that those spirits from the past accompany us and are present Saludos de tiquicia !!! 🇨🇷

There are a lot of references people aren't aware of. Opens with Lolita Lebron firing shots. She along with other Puerto Rican Nationalists wanting independence from the USA went into the Capitol and fired shots into the roof. They asked her why was she trying to kill people, she said "I didn't come to kill, I came to die." The idea was to be martyred in hoping to awaken the people, similar to the Easter Rising in Ireland 1916 with the Irish independence movement against the UK. Tupac Amaru was an Incan rebel against Spain that 2pac was named after. The toilet paper/paper towels is reference to Trump in Puerto Rico after hurricane Maria and his stunt. The women in ski masks is a reference to the Zapatistas in Chiapas Mexico who became public Jan 1, 1994 when Clinton, Canada and Mexico signed NAFTA, a trade agreement which helped US corporations, particularly big agribusiness (Green Giant, Dole, etc) flood Mexico with cheap products which meant local farmers couldn't compete. This undid the Mexican Revolution of 1910s which was fought so Mexicans could own the land they worked on (NAFTa abolished article 27 of the Mexican Constitution which made that guarantee). The guitar player is Victor Jara, a political folk singer who was captured in a US-backed coup against elected Socialist Allende with the military leader Pinochet. His hands and younger were cut off and he was murdered with other leftists in the stadium.

The opening scene is Lolita Lebrón. She was a Puerto Rican nationalist who was convicted of attempted murder and other crimes after carrying out an armed attack on the United States Capitol in 1954, which resulted in the wounding of five members of the United States Congress. She was defending the rights of Puerto Rico. The reason some parts remind you to Childish Gambino is because he makes reference to his this is America song. As America is really a continent and not just a country. He recognized Childish Gambino as a genius in his craft in an interview, but he is all about history and getting the facts straight. This video represent how North American people talk about the injustice in their history, but he can only begin to express what "We" as Latin America have gone through so much and a lot of the injustice we've faced comes from the history with the United States as the government. All of this visual are true in history. Not only Puerto Rico's history although he is Puertorican, but Latin American history. Some of these injustice still happening this day! This song was written 2 years ago. More than a singer, a poet worth of so much admiration. Which you could understand all this facts in history, would bring you to tears...

What follows are scenes of protests against heavily armed police, people forcibly separated (including a mother breastfeeding her child through a fence), and what look like students lined up with bullet holes in their heads. The backdrop features bomba beats, an Afro-Puerto Rican style of music that often symbolizes resistance against oppression and was a powerful tool for expression during the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests.
