Residential Structure Fire with entrapment - Highland Avenue, Wilkins Township, Allegheny County PA.
Resident rescued and transported to local hospital. Major hydrant issues and remote location created issues getting water to the fire. A tanker task force was requested and water supply established.

It's a sick feeling when you stand there with no water, you set up a hydrant for the water source and nothing, your heart sinks. I'm in a tanker town that brings 7,500 gals 5 trucks with 9,000 gals 3 trucks more coming from other towns when the tones drop for a structure fire. If they where in rescue mode, I'm sure they used up their tank water fast during the search, not sure what their trucks carry, I can empty our 1,000 gal engine with the deck gun 45-65 seconds . If they carry 500 gals with one attack line out maybe 2-3 mins trying to knock it down. They did a great job, they saved a life and that's what counts.

No Water, No House access. Bad combination when your house is on fire. Plenty of water and training doesn't help if your house sits where this one does. I listened to the fire comms the night this happened from tone out to fire out and it was painful listening to crews just trying to get access to the fire when there really wasn't one with heavy fire evident. Tanker 184 was dispatched on the primary run card but the primary plan was for pumpers to lay in with LDH from hydrants not shuttle tanker water. While you're working off tank water expecting hydrant water, then having to rely on the evolutions of tanker water because of bad hydrants that creates a entirely different fire scene for numerous reasons from FF's to OIC's which unfortunately will always result in exactly what happened here. Most of these vids are watched without hearing any fireground comms to understand what's really being seen resulting in some interesting comments from viewers or just spectators. Many of these same comments are heard at fire scene by novice bystanders.

I'm 1:45 into the video. Everyone might as well pack up and go get something to eat. Nothing to salvage here.

This is poor pre-planning on the home department. They should know all their remote locations and have their run cards adjusted accordingly. This house should be set as a target location with AC911.
@williamclark5339
@williamclark5339 3 года назад
When you hit a hydrant or two and there's a water issue no "run card" and going to change a damn thing. Should the tankers have been on their way ..maybe, I don't know the dynamics of the area, but if I knew there were hydrants getting a tanker task force moving is the last thing on my mind. They had a rescue and saved a life..
@24zim42
@24zim42 3 года назад
If they adjusted their run card according for this property (yes they can do that) how wouldn't adding more pieces off apparatus to the run card help? If they knew this house was in a remote location they should've added additional engines, tankers, whatever they needed.

Just showing up doesn't count but this is a good example of Typical American firefighting. No planning or work ethic. Have any idea how effective four engines carrying 750 gallons of water would have been? Of course you don't. No, let's blame everything on fire hydrants, manpower or the budget.
@williamclark5339
@williamclark5339 3 года назад
Please enlighten me on the 750 gals, it would have lasted 3-4 mins at best, one line out . if they used the deck gun 30 seconds maybe.. I'm sure the 1st due had 500 gals so an added 250 gals wouldn't have stopped that fire. You say no planning, how can you plan for any and all scenarios?? we drill, we learn,and we know how to fight a fire ,but to say poor planning, is a very ignorant comment. These brave women and men saved a life.. what did you do today?

@@williamclark5339 "Have any idea how effective FOUR engines carrying 750 gallons of water would have been?" That adds up to 3000 gallons. Try understanding what you read. "These brave women and men saved a life.. what did you do today?" That tells me you are Not a firefighter. Go back to watching the pretty flames. I was a Third Generation REAL Firefighter so you might want to Listen instead of trying to defend them!!! You arrive to deliver water, not stand around waiting for it.

@@JB91710 they dumped 4 engines on initial attack. This video was about 25 minutes into the call after they dumped additional tanks but that didn’t last long, was a long lay up hill from the other engines and once all the hydrants failed it was a wait game until tankers arrived and set up. Mind you, there was only 1 tanker close in this area the others 25-40 plus minutes and they were dispatched quickly. They were lucky to get 3 engines and a truck close. The other apparatus staged at the bottom of one hill since supply line was laid but failed to get water. It was just a bad situation and they did what they could. Plus there was entrapment from the rip so that was the first focus anyway

@@firstduephotography1056 I KNOW the American work ethic. I know how bad the American fire service is. I know how incompetent the average Water Squirter or Fountain Statue is. I know how much can be done with very little water when you Think about how to effectively apply it. Showing up and squirting water is not fire fighting. This was a single family house not an apartment complex. My original comment stands.

@@JB91710 ...3,000 gallons of water... at 1,000gpm, that will last..... wait... three minutes???? 3,000 gallons may SOUND like a lot, but it’s NOTHING. Three to five minutes... tops.... as others have commented, a deck-gun or deluge gun will empty that 3,000 gallons in one to two minutes. A fully-involved structure will require FAR more water to fully knock down.
