Had this video in my queue waiting for it to become relevant. Well Christmas morning I unwrapped an Anycubic mono 4k. I'm really excited but also intimidated. I look forward to viewing the rest of those videos and I'm hoping they calm my nerves. 😉

This was very helpful. I already bought a resin printer (Mars 3 Pro) on a Black Friday sale and have printed a few things. Some of these items were the same things I came across and some were helpful for me to know for the future. I bought a printer with a carbon filter to cut down on the smells but the safety precautions are very necessary as the filters don't fully protect you from the toxins themselves

I just wanted to thank you for your truthful information and safety advise. Living in a space which restricts me from isolating myself and the resin printer from the rest of the living space is something to acknowledge. So I will re-direct my research and attention to a fdm printer. Great video and information !

Big help Zac! I have been wanting to get a 3d printer and because I’ll probably be doing it in my house as opposed to my shop,I think I’ll lean towards the filament printer!
@ZacHiggins
@ZacHiggins 2 года назад
Glad to be able to share some thoughts and hopefully help out. I'll be covering more in depth videos on how the process all works, and I'm going to also discuss how I think it could work if you were doing it in house as well. More videos to come!! I do think that for a lot of people, the filament style printers are going to be a lot easier to get started with, and you can always add a resin printer down the road

To anyone looking into buying a Resin 3D Printer, definitely listen to the advice in this video! I learned all of this the hard way. I don't regret buying my Eligoo Mars, but this video would have been very helpful when I was starting out. I'd also love to see your video on cleanup, in case you've figured out any ways of doing it more efficiently than my process. Also important: if you're planning on making silicone molds from any piece you print off these printers, most of the resin they use will inhibit silicone so it won't cure. You either need to wait until the piece fully cures/degasses (even after UV curing this can be 10 days to 2 weeks, and different resins behave differently!), or you have to coat the piece in Inhibit-X, which is a nasty and expensive chemical. You often need to do multiple coats even. Definitely do your research if you're hoping to make molds from your 3D prints!

Great tip on the mold making! That's something I want to dip my toes in too. Have you tried tin cure vs platinum cure silicone?
@GreyMatterShades
@GreyMatterShades 2 года назад
@@ZacHiggins I've just been using platinum cure, but based on my research it sounds like tin cure has issues as well. I've been looking into a DIY molding compound made of gelatin, glycerin, and water that might not be inhibited by it, but I haven't tried it out yet. Benefit is that it's actually reusable, since you can melt it back into a liquid form to make a new mold (and it doesn't seem to melt from curing resin, though that might depend on the resin and the size of the part). Downside is that it tears much easier than silicone. Still, might be suitable to do a single use mold of the 3D print (assuming it can cure) to make an epoxy resin copy for the basis of future silicone molds. That's my hope, anyway.
@ZacHiggins
@ZacHiggins 2 года назад
@@GreyMatterShades Definitely need to do some testing on this too. It would be really nice to be able to just make a mold quick with no adverse effects. One thing I read somewhere online is if you let the prints sit for a week or two, you might not have a reaction with the silicone. I don't necessarily trust random sources on the internet though LOL I'll do some testing once I get things dialed in on the printing to see if I can find a method that will work too. Always fun to test things out, even if they result in failures
@GreyMatterShades
@GreyMatterShades 2 года назад
@@ZacHiggins Yeah I've heard letting the prints sit for a couple weeks allows them to fully cure/de-gas so they don't interact with silicone, but it varies by type of resin. Apparently Elegoo's water washable blue resin is the worst and continues to inhibit even after weeks... and of course that's the type I'd bought before learning this. 🤣 Haven't done my own tests though. Would definitely be interested if you do any testing and figure it out.

Hi Zac, The Term FEP comes from the acronym for the molecule that the bottom sheet is constructed from. It is in the Teflon family. I use a PFTE lubricant that I use to pre-treat my FEP sheet before each use to assist the FEP in doing it's job. (releasing the newest layer from the bottom of the tank). I noticed that you mentioned that the waste from water washable resin is still toxic. That is absolutely true! However that being said, water is not flammable making it inherently safer to use than IPA. That is why I, personally, use the water washable. The smaller of IPA amount I use for cleanup is much more manageable as I can keep a pint of it for use rather than gallons for parts washing.
@ZacHiggins
@ZacHiggins 2 года назад
Thanks for the info! I've tried the PTFE lube, but I didn't notice a significant difference between applying and not applying it. Jury's still out on that one for me
@whiterose7055
@whiterose7055 2 года назад
@@ZacHiggins It helps the FEP last longer (barring physical damage such as scratching and punctures) but does not give better performance each use. FEPs are rated by exposure cycles. My particular printer is rated at 30,000 exposures after which a warning is displayed on the panel LCD when starting a print. I have kept my FEP in clear, printable condition using PFTE lube 3X that rating whereas without it by 30,000 exposures the FEP will get cloudy to the point where it affects the quality of the print. YMMV, the more care you give the FEP, the longer it will last. In addition there are newer bottom sheets that are constructed using a different material that is inherently rated longer than the FEP type compound, but is more expensive. Good luck on your journey gaining experience. Once one gets past the learning curve it will be way easier than it seems at first ! goodvibes

@@whiterose7055 Thanks for the info! I have another question for you if you don't mind... Do you have any insight into FEP vs NFEP? Is it hype or worth looking into?

I picked up an Anycubic Photon Mono when they were having a sale. It's still in the box. I'm in a 1 bedroom apt. so no place to actually use it yet. Then my Ender 3 V2, is out of the box, just haven't gotten the time to fire it up. What I'd like to know, is what resin you use that you like? You mentioned it in your last stream. Thanks.
