Thanks for this. My buddy bought a resin printer without doing research. Of course he did research after and never used it. Lately I've been wanting to print minis for my sons dnd group. Now I know what to buy for my buddy so I can use his printer hahaha

Very good informational video, thank you. I've had a resin printer for over a year and have not yet tried it out!! One day I will. Like you said, a full build plate prints the same as one with one part. When I get done with filters, ventilation and other upgrades I will try. Thank you again (that's why I subscribe).

Just purchased a Foto 8.9 - Watching your vids on Resin printing - great info for newbie- started with water washable resin, getting great results - almost finished with the bottle, I have a little left and plan to start on ABS like resin. Question: can I mix the rest of the water washable resin with the new bottle of ABS like resin? I know I still have to wash with alcohol.

I'm on the fence ... I've had an FDM printer for years and have used it for practical / fun prints, but never mini's. I've been looking into resin but I have a question that I haven't seen answered anywhere - What do you do with used ISO? And what do you do with soiled towels - and do you tend to use paper towels or cloth? Thank you so much for your videos!! I've learned so much watching you paint / dry-brush prints!!!! Also, I'd love to see you paint some FDM things too! If you already have some videos where you paint PLA (or other FDM prints) let me know which ones to check out!
@miguellopez3392
@miguellopez3392 6 месяцев назад
If you have a large tank of iso you can leave it out in the sun covered and wait for the resin to settle to the bottom then filter out clean iso, you can do the same for rags contaminated by resin, or use a UV light

I know in today's world, safety is king, especially when it comes to kids. I'm a lot older than you and it was such a different world when I was growing up. My dad was an electronics technician. I was using a soldering iron at such an early age, I honestly do not even remember when I first picked one up! I was working on TVs and vacuum tube amplifiers with him - we're talking thousands of volts and deadly current - before I was 10. He had a huge homemade mouse trap in his shop that consisted of two pieces of screen wire, a large farad capacitor and a high voltage transformer. To disarm this thing, he had to literally throw a piece of metal across the screens to short it out. As children, we (my sister and I) were not shielded from danger. We were taught about danger and to respect it. When children are shielded from things, when they do come across them on their own - and believe me, they will! - no one has taught them the proper methods or precautions. THAT is how children get hurt... I'm sorry... normally I really enjoy your videos and only have positive comments. I just hate what this world has become. I'll go back lurking and (silently) enjoying from afar :)
@ItsMeaDMaDe
@ItsMeaDMaDe Год назад
I completely understand where your coming from. I grew up the same way. My dad had a workshop I have great memories being in when I was little around all kind of dangerous power tools I was taught how to be safe around them not sheltered from them. I got into resin printing when my boys where very young. They could of gotten into my stuff but I taught them how to be safe and not to mess with certain things without me. Not to get to political but I feel it’s the same thing with gun safety. I was around them as a kid and I was taught to respect them not fear them. I’ve taught the same to my boys. It’s the unknown that gets kids hurt and how accidents happen. I’m totally on board with what your saying. Thanks for the comment. No need to keep lurking in the shadows. 😂
@Fredster9984
@Fredster9984 Год назад
@@ItsMeaDMaDe Yes. I grew up in the same way. And if I touched it, it wasn't my parent's fault, it was mine for not doing what I was told. I learned quickly to keep my fingers off of something before I understood it, and stay away from things I knew were dangerous. In that time, it was Darwinism at it's finest.

With ya. I'm an old man who grew up in different times. We were less scared of everything and some how lived longer. :) Anyways... when I got into resin printing I of course ran into the click bait drama queens saying you will melt if it touches your skin. None of the paranoia sat right with me. Like they are talking like it's a class 3+ toxin. Anyways I scoured until I found a bio-chemist that had a good explanation that compared resin to bleach. But recently I found this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ht4tbCiFxeM.html which is another chemist who really does a good break down of the REAL safety. One of the things he does mention is the toxic of the rubbing alcohol everyone uses but give it no thought on safety. But my own setup... I have a combo tub cure station. I only use the tub and i mix a healthy amount of distilled water with the alcohol solution which works fine and produces less fumes. To cure...I live in a state that you have to wear SPF 1000 not to burst into flames going outside. SO, I just set them outside and let them dry. My results to me look like everyone else's results that do the voodoo rituals and crazy dangerous 99.999999% alcohol. So in my opinion the most dangerous things to you, pets and children is the alcohol. Seems the chemist is in agreement with that. It's super dangerous to drink resin... but dear god nothing in nature wants to be near the smell of it, let alone drink it. As far as a child touching fresh prints. Why haven't you dumped them in the tub and clean them??? If they're already clean... who cares. Scold them for getting into things they shouldn't, wash their hands and take a breath. I've had accidents and got resin on me. Wash the area, take a shower if you need to. It's no worst then having an accident with floor cleaner. That being said... I do like the rubber mat idea. Just so it cleans up easier and looks nicer. My wood workbench is covered with drip stains. Clean with alcohol, hit it with UV light and they are ugly but perfectly safe. Eye and hand protection with ventilation is a really good idea and commons sense. Ventilation for alcohol ABSOLUTELY necessary.

So 2 things i heard that I feel should be addressed. 1. Latex gloves are ok but nitrile is better. The chemicals will seep through both but it will go through the latex faster. If you get resin on your gloves, regardless of what kind, dont panic but finish what you are doing in a timely fashion and remove the gloves. 2. Most resins only take 1-4 minutes in a curing station. Some tougher ones are 6-8 and there are some industrial high strength resins that need 15+. Overcuring leads to brittleness so check what your resin suggests for cure times after printing.

How does it compare to FDM on difficulty getting good prints? I'm almost a year into FDM amd still constantly tweaking settings.
@ItsMeaDMaDe

Settings wise there are less so it’s easier to get right. FDM is an ever ending tweaking. I have gone through 10 bottles of resin and only had one fail and I think that was my error.

Resin is the weakest when it comes strength. Resin can be very brittle and if you drop it it can shatter.

I have seen recently where people are submerging prints in water in the cure station to make them more pliable. I haven't heard of that before, have you tried it?
@ItsMeaDMaDe
@ItsMeaDMaDe Год назад
Yes I have and have done it. The key is put it in hot water for a few mins then slowly bend it. It’s great if there is something like a figure holding a sword and it’s bent or you want to bend something but it has its limits you can’t do it a lot or it will break.
@Fredster9984
@Fredster9984 Год назад
@@ItsMeaDMaDe I think you misunderstood me. I don't mean before curing, I mean they put it in water under the light and cure it submerged in water. They say it cures in 1/2 the time and it's more flexible and cured better. Look up "cure prints in water"
@ItsMeaDMaDe
@ItsMeaDMaDe Год назад
@@Fredster9984 oh! Sorry thought you were talking about making it flex a little. So… no never heard of that. I’ll have to look into it. Making it flexible I don’t see how it would once it’s cured but curing faster does makes sense the water probably refracts the light to cover more at once. Seem interesting enough to test…

Great video! One thing I think you should have mentioned is that the "smell" that you're mentioning is carcinogenic fumes. The resin fumes aren't good for you at all. It can give you headaches and potentially cancer if you inhale it long enough over a long period of time. You need a mask with a special filter that's rated for organic vapors. I think that by just mentioning a smell you make it seem like it smells bad but its ok to breathe. I really do like the video though and learned a lot!
