Wow! Thank you so much for posting! I had an old piano bench that was in storage and hadn't realized that something had been sitting on it. The dent is hardly noticeable now :)

Amazing. Definitely pretty scary though. There is a slight indention from what I perceived to be an elbow stretch on an armrest have a couch. Scared of burning it but I may give this a try going in super light at first.

The problem with the hot damp cloth strategy is the water itself. You see, water from the tap is normally slightly alkaline (7.8). Leather on the other hand is acidic (4.5 to 5.0). So getting the leather wet causes a potential pH differential in the leather that helps to break down its fiber structure. With a direct DRY heat, you can be very focused on the offended area. Further, the heat is gradually lost from the cloth whereas with the heat gun, the heat is constant, thus more effective.

Yes, a hair dryer will work just fine. Use the same procedure shown in the video.
@matjaro

but it wont be hot enough no? in this video its almost on max setting, how can a hair dryer be effective then?
@centraliawashingtonsimmanu8026
@centraliawashingtonsimmanu8026 9 месяцев назад
Of course it has to put out sufficient heat. Most hair dryers on the hottest setting works just fine though it may take longer to be effective.

what about misting/moisturizing with conditioner then heating? would this help the process? I have some pretty bad dents in some mustang seats from where a bracket was sitting in storage. Thanks

Keep in mind that you would NEVER use the misting concept on the outer surface, only on the suede side and just enough to lightly dampen the leather prior to applying heat.

@womackke
@womackke 11 лет назад
what do you think about the guys that say to put a rag on it after ringing out some pretty hot water then rolling a ball or something to smooth it out? (all on the outer side) nice video
@KevinGillan
@KevinGillan 11 лет назад
If you have access to the inside (suede side) of the leather, then following the procedure shown from the inside of the hide will reduce the evidence of a dent. You can enhance the affect of the heat if you lightly spray (mist) water before applying heat.

I got a new leather sofa. I fell asleep on it in barefeet and now it's marked where my bare feet are and I'm confused as it isn't a dent or anything it's actually my foot print and there was nothing no oils or anything on my feet is this normal
@diordrama
@diordrama 5 лет назад
Thanks this is awesome. I've seen videos of the technique being used on the normal stretching wrinkles you get on the seat area-is this safe to use this heat gun method more than once?
@KevinGillan
@KevinGillan 5 лет назад
Yes, you can. Often a sent will appear to be resolved and find that 24 hours later, it returns though to a lesser degree. The leather has a "memory" of that dented shape and sometimes reverts back to it. Simply repeat the process if that happens.

Would this work on some leather that has been folded and I need to get the crease out .?
@KevinGillan
@KevinGillan 9 лет назад
This crease problem has been brought into our shop by our clients many times over the last 25 years. Unfortunately the heating technique will generally not resolve a crease. If the leather was folded (creased) for an extended period, it's now a permanent shape to that leather. You can stretch the leather tight and mist water on the suede side and then heat it from the suede side. That should help minimize the crease line but our experience has been that you can not resolve it completely. You can also fill in the valley caused by the crease with leather repair compound and then color over to conceal. That is very tedious and not a perfect solution.

On my Benz my ex's dog jumped on the center console and there is dents from his nails, it didn't poke holes but really noticeable. Will this method work for that?
@KevinGillan
@KevinGillan 6 лет назад
if it's leather, yes. However most center consoles are vinyl, not leather in which case it won't work.

I used a hairdryer on my Buck Leather couch back, the dimples came taught. The next day they were back and dimpled like before. Might try the paint gun for more heat, but is it worth ruining it? The leather is light medium brown in color, afraid of discoloring the leather.
@KevinGillan
@KevinGillan 5 лет назад
As noted in the video, it's not unusual that the dent would reappear, however generally it reappears as a smaller reference. If the hair dryer resolved it the first time, you should use it again. The professional grade heat gun puts out a lot more heat so it is true that it is more effective at tightening the fibers. I suggest you try the hair dryer again before you spend the money for a heat gun, even if you have to do the exercise once a day for a week, the leather will eventually respond.

Can I fix this on a Honda Civic leather counsel ?
@KevinGillan
@KevinGillan 4 года назад
Is it leather or vinyl? This procedure only works with real leather. If the dent effects the underlying foam as well, while you can get the leather to respond, you won't be able to get the foam to respond so the compression of the foam is permanent. To fix would require new foam.

Kevin, How hot should the leather surface be that you are working on
@KevinGillan
@KevinGillan 3 года назад
There is no standard as there are many different types of leather based on how it was processed at a tannery. As a rule of thumb, I wouldn't exceed 200 degrees fahrenheit. You don't want to "cook". the leather. Two points to be made: 1. Keep the heat moving, don't focus on a single spot for more than a few seconds. 2. Put your hand on the leather near where the heat is focused. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for the leather.

Will this work on pleather?
@KevinGillan
@KevinGillan Год назад
No. It works on leather because the heat allows the moisture content to vacate the leather whereas synthetics doesn’t have that same property.
@judomoose00
@judomoose00 Год назад
What was the length of time the heat was applied?
@KevinGillan
@KevinGillan Год назад
Heat applications continues until the dent resolves. The main variables are: 1. severity of the dent, 2. temperature of the heat flow, and 3. thickness of the leather,
@feliciau3368

Would this with with the poly type leather?
@KevinGillan
@KevinGillan 5 лет назад
No. Synthetic material like vinyl don’t have the same internal structure as real leather. Furthermore, high heat is likely to damage it.

Curious if this will also work in a car. My car door closed and hit my watch. My watch left a crease but not a tear on the leather panel above the door handle in my mercedes. I tried to massage it out gently but no luck.
@KevinGillan
@KevinGillan Год назад
Two things to consider: 1. Are you sure the offended panel is leather and not vinyl. Most door panels, regardless of the manufacturer are vinyl, matched to the color of the interior leather. This process does not work with vinyl. 2. Assuming it is leather, if the foam substrate under the covering material has been compressed (like it's been embossed by the image of the watch) by this incident, then that foam compression will not be resolved by this heating method. It will respond to heat if it is leather. What the heat does is cause the reduction of the moisture content in the leather resulting in shrinking the leather in the offended area, tightening it in the process thus eliminating the crease.

Would this work out for a dent in a leather dash board
@KevinGillan
@KevinGillan 4 года назад
Likely not. A dent in the dashboard means the foam underneath the leather has been dented. This process resolves a dent in the leather but not the underlying foam. To solve this problem the form has to be replaced.
