Thank you :) I wish you did more videos, imo you are seriously the best bird channel on youtube, far better than even those that claim to be professionals. Mine get aggressive when I try to change their water dishes, mostly I think cause they have a hormonal connection to water. I've largely been able to control it via putting yoghurt on my fingers while doing the water for a while to break the habit, causing them to come running over to lick my fingers with no interest in biting & then verbal rewarding each time they let me do the water without my fingers bleeding, but I'm really flying blind & just experimenting, your video's awesome, cause it's basically doing as I am, BUT in a much more structured & controlled way, with real direction to it & real understanding of the reasons behind the behaviour & reasons changes are working, so for me at least, it nails what I need to succeed. Same with all your videos. First one of yours I saw, soon after getting my birds, was step up & the idea of "asking them a question, will you step up?" has stuck with me from the start with everything, even stuff like the water, I ask them "can I change your water please?", which makes me watch & pay attention to them, which means I can predict if there's going to be a problem & my birds respond so well overall to being "asked" & that eye contact & warning that something's coming, instead of biting, with most things, they look at me & decide they're going to let me, or give me an "oy, NO" squawk rather than biting, cause they feel listened to/respected :) Anyway, just wanted to say a big thanks, cause this really is great & what I need right now & all your stuff is great :) Your attitude & understanding of bird thinking is amazing

I really want to thank you for all your videos. I got my bird 7 months ago. I was very I'll prepared and had ancient knowledge. I began searching RU-vid for help. I found your videos soon after. I have a well adjusted now. I don't have any issues with her. We are very bonded and I've very had a relationship with another animal like I have with her now. It's different than a cat or dog. I don't want to ever be without a bird again. I hope she she's with me a long time. Maybe even the rest of my life as I'm 50 now.n

Unrelated, but I’m just too excited to not share this!! I just got my budgies new stainless steel food bowls! My dad kept refusing to buy new ones cus we already have plastic ones and he doesn’t see the point to getting new ones, so I made them stainless steel ones for free! It took a lot of hard work, patience, and planning, but I’m really happy with the outcome. So basically, we had some pine wood left over from when we made their play gym and we had stainless steel sauce dishes that we got in a set of plates that someone gifted us ten years ago. So I drilled some holes into the wood to make a bracket for the stainless steel sauce dishes. Then I used some steel hanger bolts, stainless steel washers, and stainless steel hex nuts to attach it to the cage. The birds are still scared of it, but I can’t wait for them to start exploring it!

So my lovebird is so fixated on resource guarding all things inside or outside its cage it is not safe to get near it. I have the battle scars to prove it. However, I can go right in to change out the water and food without being attacked! I guess 'Don't bite the hand that feeds you' is its mindset. Lucky me!!! Thank you for this timely video.

I heard parrotlet is very aggressive towards to other birds. Please advise what you think whether parrotlet will go alone with my budgie. Please advise.

@SeabassFishbrains
@SeabassFishbrains 2 года назад
One of my birds (Spock) is a hardcore resource guard, but according to him, I am a resource and so is my other bird (Sasha). He will dive bomb to attack anyone who touches me and he'll attack me too for touching Sasha (literally, if she steps up for me, he will come flying across the room, land on the same hand that she's on and bite the heck out of that hand), he's like a tiny, flying, guard dog whose priority ranking is: 1. Sasha, 2. Human, 3. Anything shiny.
@kiki29073
@kiki29073 2 года назад
Mine is magpie too. Loves anything shiny or reflective. I have to keep a sheet of paper on a part of my fridge because she sees herself in it and will hover Infront constantly. I think the shiny thing is the reflectiveness it gives.
@mehere8038
@mehere8038 2 года назад
mine are VERY similar. I'm still working them out & they're still working out how they feel, after a decade with an owner who kept them both in separate tiny cages, with nothing to do but pick up & drop stainless steel food & water bowls & get hormonal over them & screech & pluck. They're now in a larger cage together & get genuine love from their human, so LOTS of learning & changing, one of mine is possessive, but he also refuses to let anyone (bird or human) touch him & is also scared to leave his cage from years of abuse, so he won't totally attack if I'm training outside the cage, but in general I think mine are much like yours, but just emotionally messed up to the point that it doesn't show as clearly. I wonder what's behind it & how it's best handled. I'm still figuring out how to respond myself
@mehere8038
@mehere8038 2 года назад
@@kiki29073 agreed re reflectiveness, but also the sound (with mine at least) mine love the sound of metal clanging, such as dropping their food dish & get really hormonal to it too. I think it might be related to the way some birds go crazy over bells. crinkling aluminium foil really sets one of mine off too

hey could you let me know if you've done a video on how birds can't breathe when they're directly under the shower? I keep seeing people do this and share photos because they look like they're putting their head back to enjoy it, but really they're struggling to breathe. I know I've seen this explained in a video. if it was one of your could you let me know which one? or if not, could you make a video? thanks so much for your channel ❤️

Would using the same clicker for different rewards, like leaving the room *and* treats, cause confusion for the bird?
@FlockTalk
@FlockTalk 2 года назад
Nope, unless you really wanted specific markers which is more prominent in dog training (they’ll usually indicate reinforcement type and things like “end behaviour” or “continue behaviour”). For just basic training it’s not totally necessary though. The click just represents they’ve done the right thing and some form of reinforcement will follow, whether that’s treats or you going away doesn’t influence it all too much in most cases.

I have a budgie that guards the food bowls and treats away from his budgie pal that he shares a cage with. Can I use this technique with a bird who’s territorial against another bird instead of with a bird who’s territorial against a person? He doesn’t have any aggressive behaviors at all towards me. It’s all 100% towards his budgie pal, and it’s so not cool to watch him block her from getting treats or even food all day. My only defense at this point to make sure she’s getting her food and treats is to lock him up in a separate cage for a little while so she can get a break from him 😢
@FlockTalk
@FlockTalk 2 года назад
You definitely can but be aware that you’re going against genetics at that point, and that can’t always be “trained away”. While the methods may help, they may not make the problem go away completely. Things like larger cage size, multiple feeding spots, variable valued foods, and plenty of cover/ hides (toys/perches) will also help.
@peepsicle
@peepsicle 2 года назад
@@FlockTalk Thank you for your response! I was worried about that. I’m also worried that it’s a young male hormonal behavior. He’s about 7-8 months old and seems to be going through a very bratty teen phase that I’m hoping is only temporary. He was so sweet and easy to train when he was a baby. And now he’s super “macho” and hovers around the female budgie, puffing his chest out! His eyes get super pinned, and he won’t let her get her treats. It’s kinda gross to watch lol. Poor female budgie. Yes, we have the largest flight cage available on the market, multiple food bowls all over the room, and even all over the house. But he still chases her around. I guess we’ll continue locking her in another cage for an hour or so a day so she can get a break from him every day. Thanks again!
