As I'm listening to this vid I open YT homepage open in another tab only to find a re-upload of that exact vid by another creator. Great to see the adage of "Once it's on the internet it exists forever" ringing true here too:D
Also helps that the video is still up on Floatplane. So anybody who subscribes there can download a copy of the video, with the officially provided download button, and re-upload elsewhere, with Linus' blessing. So no matter how many times it gets taken down elsewhere, there's a guaranteed source to still obtain it.
Alphabet should be held liable for all the scams they push as ads. Someone scammed you via google ads? Google pays and then tries to get it back from the scammers. You cannot be a crucial part of the scam and not be liable.

Don't forget the scam comments that still run rampant that they refuse to address, while they are in nonstop overdrive banning channels for no reason, and generally refusing to say why.
I reported the same scam on google ads twice, they did nothing. I actually had to go though the local authorities to close the domains used in those ads.

Can't agree more. At least sometimes. Thankfully shitty people are easily recognizable and avoided. So they are only a "sometimes thing" and not an "all the time thing". The secret is not to wait around for them to have a second chance at treating you badly. Expect it and go. They forewarn us, and don't change.
I bought a $250 Nest camera 7/8 years ago and had an AC plug professionally installed my attic above my porch ceiling. I also paid for the Nest subscription to receive 5 days of continuous cloud storage. A couple of years ago, Nest changed the recording requirements by having the camera only record when it senses movement. As a result, the camera no longer functions as it originally did based on my purchase. Later this year, they decided to increase the price from $60 to $85 per year, I called Google support which took forever to get ahold of a support person to claim my camera isn't functioning as it intended from my first purchase and explained the problem, they said sorry you can't return the camera per our terms and service. I did not agree to the new terms, so I shut down my Nest subscription. Consequently, I upgraded my network to a Ubiquiti system, discarded the Google camera, and replaced it with a Unifi camera system that records data locally without requiring a subscription. We own nothing when we buy physical or digital products from Google, and this practice should be illegal, especially when hardware is involved.
"sorry, you can't do that due to you accepting the original terms of service." "we can do whatever we want because we retroactively make you accept the new terms." absolutely mind boggling that our politicians haven't put a stop to this tech and financial R A P E.
I absolutely don't want to victim blame, but honestly we could all see this coming, especially with how gaming went down then with "pray we don't alter the deal further" live service nonsense. 10 years ago I wanted both a security camera (mostly to watch my cat breaking stuff) and something to control my central heating system. Nest wasn't bought by google yet so I bought both a Nest thermostat and a camera, but quickly returned them once I found out all the "cloud" garbage and endless license agreement nonsense that came with it and bought a PTZ ipcamera that could just rtmp stream video on the LAN, setup a NAS that could re-stream it over the internet (with a dedicated separate physical network so it can't even snoop around mine) so I could watch it on my phone while away and forgot about the whole network enabled thermostat controls. I guess I just put a lid on my drink so I couldn't be roofied because my completely local setup still runs fine to this day. In the grand scheme of things, be thankful that this lesson only costed $250 and whatever you paid in subscription fees, some people are completely invested in an entire ecosystem with thousands of dollars of stuff and the cost of switching over to another system would cost another pile of money.
Don't think for a second unifi won't require subscriptions sooner or later. When competing with cisco they got a lot of work to do before requiring subscriptions would for them. Though as soon as they are large enough fees will come in. Their Access Control and IAM services are already rooted in a subscription model.

I watched that video, and when they brought up the thing that must not be named, I thought to myself "see Louis is just overreacting." Well lo and behold, that video doesn't exist anymore. Hmmmmmm.
The indentheaders at YT are to busy suckin' eachother off to really deal with real issues here. The truth really does hurt their feelers, and they think that removing truths will somehow make make them untrue, null and void. They really are that stupid.
I think its more like "The Guidelines for our Community", shorthanded to "The Community Guidelines", or just "Community Guidelines", not necessarily "The Community's Guidelines". The 's is important.
It is incredible, unfathomable, ridiculous, how in the year of our lord 2024 companies still don't understand the Streisand effect. All they did is make sure MORE people hear about the video and go out looking for a reupload, or a summary of what was said.
I'm not convinced this is applicable here. LTT has way more reach than Louis, and their main platform is RU-vid. If this had turned into a large controversy, then maybe, but I also don't see this becoming one. I mean, let's face it: no one is surprised by YT doing this, right?
Thank you for bringing that up. Never heard about Invidious but now I know it thanks to RU-vid blocking the video. Already running in my homelab and I’m very happy with it.
@@scout360pyroz Haven't run into that yet personally. Is it due to RU-vid's sabotage of the feature? I know that the Grayjay team is in a constant back and forth war with youtube on stuff like this.
its really not genius at all, its how RU-vid started. The inconvenient truth is, youtube doesn't want to empower creators, they want to empower your need to click.
The dad who took photos of son for doctor Google AI is just keeps reminding me why sometimes storing your family photo and important stuff on someone else's online cloud servers is a bad idea regardless of their terms of services and privacy promises. Since, these services are not truly yours to keep and can be used against you anyway. I feel, always backup your important stuff offline or locally offline and not on someone else's servers. We now live in a digital society where most online digital contents can be tracked, stamped and logged in my eyes.
The bigger problem is that they took his entire Google account. Meaning access to email and therefore potentially alternative 2FA methods and password recovery options. In other words a problem like this could prevent you from accessing countless other websites. That’s scary AF and a big reason to de-google your life.
I would have thought this lesson was learned with MEGAUpload, when the US government seized all the servers, and people who were using it for legal backup purposes were screwed over from getting their data. Yes it was kind of like using a safety deposit box located in the mafia's bank, but still that some entity can step in and take it over...
@@CanIHasThisName 👍Indeed. Also, this is why you should always be aware of what you post online or on any online services. Especially, when it comes to children, drugs or money stuff. Man, yall are going to fall right in line when Linus eventually says RU-vid is bad, come pay 10 bucks a month on MY streaming website! It's different, I swear.

Yea, I took some screenshots because I was concerned it would get taken sown because I got back for a second watch. At least it's probably still up on floatplane.
There's a bunch of reuploads on many platforms including this one with the whole list of things he talked about, look it up using the title of the video or if you have the url you can check the internet archive too.
I like that GrayJay. Didn't used to respond to my headset controls, but what do you know, they fixed it. Imagine that, updating an app not to put in more advertising or trackers, but to improve the function. Wild stuff, man
Good video, it's important to not only call out people and companies when they do something scummy but also to credit people when they do something good.
Inevitably ,even if Linus makes a 5 click solution to de googlify your life, a big ass percentage of people will simply prefer the normal, subscription mainstream way to manage these things because its easier. Its why people eat at mcdonalds instead of preparing 100% of their meals.
@@LuigiVN Yes, people prefer the convenience that is offered by these services, and only a tiny portion of people experience anything bad, so they don't care.

My old channel focused on ROMs for Android phones Pixels mostly and self hosting media content. The final blow came when I released a video about an open-source RU-vid client that bypasses tracking and advertising. After that, my channel with 80K subscribers disappeared, and I had to give up on all my planning, testing, recording, and editing work. It was a lot of effort, and I'm not ready to start from scratch. and just its not worth it anymore.
I'm hoping Grayjay eventually releases a PC or system agnostic web version of the app, since I consume all my media content via PC, not phone. Props to them for developing it though, will keep an eye on it.
I would appreciate the same, but the increased flexibility and customization of PC platforms, even macos, has likely made a desktop client a much lower priority. That is a good idea though, I'm sure many people would appreciate such a well made app on all of their devices, especially ones that have screens larger than 6 inches lol.
As far as I understood, the violation was the recommendation of a software that enables you to download and watch RU-vid videos, which is a premium feature of RU-vid you have to pay for

my favorite part is how the videos they have that essentially tell you to pirate content are perfectly fine but specifically the one talking about adblock and RU-vid alternatives gets a community guidelines strike
I will die on the hill that ad-blocking is not piracy, it's self-defence, but I'll give Linus a ton of respect for this video. (I also 100% called this and archived the video preemptively, just in case. lol)

I saw the notification when the video was uploaded and ignored it... Now I'm curious, and trying to find a re-upload to watch, Streisand effect is powerful indeed
3:51 That reminds me a bit (although less drastically) of a false copyright claim by "JASRAC_CS" on "Wet Hands" by C418 in a video in and about Minecraft on my channel - even though you are allowed to use it in Minecraft-related content. When I refuted, with the comment that Minecraft's music is allowed to be used in Minecraft videos (I didn't even edit it in, the game just played it and my screen and audio capture captured it), I got an email fifteen seconds later, stating that a manual review has been done and my video breaks the copyright law. And the video is almost half an hour long, plus the transfer and update rate delays I'm pretty sure the "manual" review was sone by a computer that just automatically says "You're wrong" to any request.
That logic works until you are using a service funded by ads. Frankly I think adblock should become far more common along with simply denying service to people who choose to use it. The existence of both would encourage far more reasonable ad usage.
Not if it is paid by these elements you want to block. If you paid for the service, then you'd be right. Also this goes both ways, you're not entitled to something and the other side is not. It's like bringing your own drinks to a bar.
Much respect for Linus. He's Canadian. Even though people try to prejudge him and call him a sellout. Sure he does work for corporations but they don't own him. This action by RU-vid is on a very slippery slope.
I believe they categorize it as promoting piracy, which it's going to be hard for Linus to argue against, as he has outwardly argued the same thing about ad blockers in the past.
Louis, you’re the shit too! You are responsible for making us aware as consumers, we can and should be able to fix our own devices and not add to the waste of the world.
Not only adblock, but how to set up pi-hole to. He never condemned piracy, just said that add block could be considered a form of it, cause it directly impacts the revenue of the creators.
He never said that you shouldn't do it and has made many videos about it over the years and mentioned adblocks positives many times. He just said that it IS piracy not that you shouldn't pirate. Justthat you have to consider your own values and make your own decisions. He has even made it pretty clear that over the years he has pirated in the traditional sense A LOT. Just that now that he has the means he trys to own a physical copy of the movies or games he downloads.
Huh, it seems you can classify something as piracy without condemning it. It always felt like Linus made Adblock sound like piracy or stealing, because he also wanted to give them the negative connotation and therefore not wanting you to use it. It seems that's not the case?
It IS piracy, you are withholding payment from the creators while still taking the content. Linus also says, that there are valid reasons to do it anyways.
