Zoro may not be established as vice captain officially but he was definitely the first mate.

Zoro is vice-captain for this very reason. No one and I mean *No One* has ever spoken to Luffy about this in him upholding his responsibility as a Captain on the crew. There are times when the crew admonishes Luffy's actions or decisions but Zoro is one who seldom ever does. "He may be an idiot but he is still our Captain". That is a perfect summarization of why people say he's the second-in-command. He understands the respect needed to be given to Luffy and when *Sanji* co-signs, you know that these are words and decisions to be taken seriously. And let's also not forget this, Luffy and Zoro are members of the Worst Generation of Pirates, meaning these two are more contemporaries who are the same crew, same as Kidd and Killer. There is a level of "equality", to a degree, shared between the two because they are recognized as one of the 12 new leading pirates of this current era. That is not to be ignored or discounted. Grandlinereview has a great video better explaining the relationship these two share and why so many have come to view Zoro as the vice-captain even if he was never verbally acknowledged as one.

First time i read this scene at the manga, i have same reaction as the bottom right reactor, usopp was arguing with Luffy which is the captain, so if usopp want to rejoining SHP, what he must do first was apologize

Zoro is the Vice Captain in my opinion. He was right about everything about Usopp. He wanted him to come back also, but what Usopp said and did to them really hurt. In his mind, this isn't something that can just be laughed off and not addressed. He isn't in the wrong either. Even though Usopp helped them save Robin at Enies Lobby, it has no effect on the choices he made before hand.

I love how Zoro's stsnce here has multiple fronts. One he wants Usopp to respect the crew and the captain and two he wanted Usopp to apologize for ignoring everyone else's feelings. During the Merry conflict Usopp thought he was the only one who was hurt and kept the fire going. He failed to realize that everyone was suffering and that his words couldn't have been more false.

Zoro is speaking from experience that we've all seen. He challenged a man for the title of "World's #1 Swordsman" and LOST fully accepting his own death. Whether you agree with him here or not, you've got to respect that he is passionately advocating for principles that he himself has followed to his literal (almost) end when dueling with Mihawk. "No matter who the right one is, once a man decides to fight a duel, the outcome of the duel decides that argument." It was only by Mihawk's will that Zoro was *allowed* to live. It was only by Luffy's will that Usopp was *allowed* to rejoin the crew.

Many tend to forget that Sanji used to be a Vice Captain, somewhat. He was the Sous Chef at the Baratie, meaning he understands what it means to exercise authority as the 2nd in command of a crew. Him agreeing with Zoro about Usopp needing to apologize is the way of the seas whether you are Pirate crew, a Navy crew, or even a bunch of sea cooks. You can't disrespect your captain, leave the crew, and then expect to simply be greeted back into the group with open arms.

I don't think it matters if Zoro is an official vice captain. There are things you could interpret as him having a leading role in the crew as needed. But I do think it's vital to note that despite some crewmates disagreeing with his attitude on this, nobody actively overruled or ignored him. And I'm sure people outside the crew might interpret only Luffy and Zoro being among the Supernovas to mean something. I know I did. All these comments are even more proof that people see him a certain kind of way. And Luffy respected Zoro's stance enough to where he didn't want to risk Zoro leaving over this. So if they never name a vice captain, it absolutely won't matter, because Zoro established himself as an authority figure to the point where some will always see him that way. And that's not even a bad thing, he was totally right about Usopp.

At first I was like "Ok cool he's rehearsing because he really cares." Then I saw the disrespectful ass shit he was planning to say to the Strawhats' faces about making him Vice Captain, and I immediately retracted my thoughts. He really challenged the Captain to a duel, lost, and had the audacity to think that they would immediately take him back, and even beg him to come back, and that he could extort them into getting what he wanted instead taking responsibility and apologizing. If the Strawhats weren't already leaving, I guarantee you he would have tried that shit, and botched his entire chance of coming back, all becausehe didn't want to take accountabilityfor his actions and instead try to manipulate his so-called friends. It's only after he thinks it's too late does he finally learn. This behavior is exactly why I dislike Usopp as a character.
