I'm not indian (I'm black) and I still relate to your videos and how media has represented other races/ cultures. I love it when people who claim to not "care" about representation, thinks they should be the ones who get to tell people how they're shown to the world
i love that sm. as an indian i watch a lot of black creators when i see american media. theyre more relatable somehow. and i love that there are more and more indian ones now.
Why do people think comedy has to offend others? If you have to upset other people to feel like you are funny then you probably aren’t. And if you really “offended the Irish”, why is it only men calling you out? People who truly support the Irish cause also call for the end of colonialism as a whole and the end of every apartheid state globally. For the freedom and respect of ALL indigenous people and the liberation against imperialism in all forms. It pisses me off especially because of the British oppressors of the Irish are also the same to oppress the Desi people. I think being able to ignore the common enemy really shows the position of privilege
I dont believe they think that at all. It's merely an excuse for those types of people to say whatever they want free of consequence. It's never actually been about comedy
not the Irish jumping in to explain racism 💀 stg the second anyone brings up racism it summons the white people that think the discrimination the Irish faced was at all comparable to the discrimination of any other immigrant
This is the best roasting I've ever seen. Also the discussion started in my family recently about how Irish people used to be an oppressed class in the US, leading members of my family to refuse to understand why we're "white" now while black people are still an oppressed class. This video reminded me to go a bit deeper in my research about this. Beforehand, I'd heard that Irish people were allowed to be hired in the police, and back in the day, the police "protected" white people from their fear of black people as well as protected the property of the upper class. Just now I read an academic articel that reminded me that the Irish, though a lower class in the 1800s, came to the US while slavery was still around. Though I still have to read exactly how it happened, the US party in favor of slavery got Irish votes while pushing to keep slavery (because there was no solidarity between poor oppressed unenslaved workers and enslaved people despite there still being a lot of abolitionists). Plus, even after slavery ended, there was still no worker solidarity between white and black people, and white people complained about black people "taking their jobs" when white people were on strike (even though these people were being paid even less than the white people striking and weren't even able to have jobs just that and the previous generation). Feels weird to be talking like this when really all you can do to these racist Irish people is corn them like the beef they eat. (it is quite fun to say that as a vegetarian)
i’m so tired of the “it’s just acting, any actor/voice actor can portray a character” argument. as a trans and autistic person i can’t even say that i would like to see more characters like me be portrayed by people who actually hold those identities without at least one person being like “iT’s aCtInG”
5:40 I haaate when ppl say this typa shit 😭 like a lot of these ““““““““““comedians”””””””””” write Indian characters with Indians accents not to represent Indians with Indian accents who happen to be funny but to make fun of the accent as a whole and to up hold racist stereotypes not every single piece of representation has good/non ignorant intentions🗿
You made a good point about The Simpsons writers-they've done status quo changes before and there's so much comedic potential in subverting 25 years of expectations. Maybe they could develop Apu's relatives more, expand on his family to show more than one Indian perspective. Why pretend your South Asian character doesn’t exist when you could hire Desi writers to come up with more subtle humor than "ohoho funny accent" or "hahaha hinduism is silly"?
“you people ruin everything good” …I’m sorry, whose decision was it to make megamind 2? 🤔 media is shitting itself and its not bc theyre not allowed to make lazy offensive stereotypes anymore. You’re awesome Karra, keep making vids you wanna make!
I also think that the comments on voice acting have no idea what kind of work oes into voice acting. It's absolutely not just talking behind a cartoon character!
In that HotDiggityDemon video that so many people think is the perfect response to The Problem with Apu, the creator Max says this to Hari Kondabolu: "I will be expecting you to cease and desist any and all jokes about America... after all you don't want to be a guy who makes fun of a culture, while simultaneously demanding that people stop making fun of your culture." But dude, Hari was born in Queens, NYC, he IS American!
You're annoying the right people. If they're annoyed enough to leave comments in numbers you know you've touched a nerve. Just keep speaking your truth and for your people, you don't need their approval or attention and that's what really gets them. I'm glad you acknowledged the self hatred too. We're up against everyone, even our own.
I screamed when you pulled out the pink whitney. As someone who used to have a bit of a problem with alcohol I know how crazy pink whitney can get 😭 hope you weren’t sick after this or anything 💕 loved this video too you were making great points and being hilarious!
☝first of all, a very big congratulations for hitting 5k!!!!! But also, you know you've made it when middle aged bigoted people with no profile photos spend their entire day obsessively hating on your content 🥲🩷 your channel is stellar and I'm glad you're starting these conversations. As an Irish person, I do not accept any of these other people as my fellow Irishman because WHAT is that nonsense (btw slay for keeping the usernames and whatnot, if people have the time to leave a public comment, then it should stay public 🤪)
Lmao that last comment was wild. Maybe we need more non American people voicing americans and giving them ridiculous “cowboy accents” and “valley girl” accents and see how some americans react to that 🤔
Love your videos 😂 All ima say if the Irish got the same generalization as black and brown ppl they would probably agree but most of the time the Irish are being glorified with amazing drinking capacity and bright lushes red hair or kilts and bag pipes but it’s not the same when you are being casted as a nerdy weird Indian person or an aggressive and scary black person.
...this video made me want to drink at 8:13 in the morning. That last comment made me felt uncontrollable rage of a 1000 burning suns. Girl drink some water. Your liver will thank you. Lmao!
Congrats on 5k! Its so cool seeing another Indian creator and your video essays are always so nice to watch because you speak about the things that should be spoken about (even with the hate) so thank you!
Congrats on the 5K followers Karra! I've always followed you because of the embroidery but these videos really show off your exemplary sense of humour. Am having a yummy drink with a lot of gin in your honour. Cheers to you🍸
I liked the video about the Indian rep in shows. You brought up points that I never thought of. I watched Sally Bollywood when I was a teenager and I thought it was cool how diverse the characters were. And it's nice to know that they at least did their research on Indian culture. Though, I didn't know most of the voice cast was white. That was crazy.
THIS IS A COMPLIMENT...... Due to the fact you are an attractive Content Creator, people are going to be very critical of your content due to their " shortcomings ".... Next..... We live in a world that believes any cultural representation is good representation, which is BULLSH##T ....Intelligent people can recognize a Negative Stereotype when they see one. ... Continue doing what you do and ignore the haters... You are one of the CHOSEN.
Kenyan here! At first, I only tangentially related to your frustrations Karra. I used to find a lot of these shows and cartoon Indian depictions funny but over the years the depictions begun to make me groan. I never really understood them as problematic until I watched Black Panther, and I was like what is that accent???? The random "generic African accent" the west always seems to use even in a movie supposedly championing afro futurism really bothered me and your video on Indian representation in media tapped into my own frustration at African representation. Side note: RIP Chadwick but I really didn't like black panther.
I'm not too familiar with Caribbean culture, so forgive me! In every context I've heard this word, it's been as a racial slur. But in the context of that comment I received, I am pretty sure it was not meant in a friendly tone.
yes Coolie in the South Asian Caribbean, Central and South American culture is totally different meaning than in South Asian culture in India its more how Black people and some Hispanic in America call them selves the n word with the a as a term of endearment
I left the daal makhanni comment, and it was mostly tongue in cheek. But also, Irish folks, in DS9 Season 1 Episodes 16 (yes, I'm a nerd, get over it) Colm Meany made them remove the leprechaun because it was offensive to Irish people. I have never heard a *single* person give him any shit about it. Hmm, I wonder why he gets a pass here? I'm sure there's some subtle shade of difference, but I can't put my finger on it.
Very shady... also thank you for sticking around after I called daal makhanni mid, I know a lot of people for whom that would be considered "going too far"
I really want you to review the designs and portrayal of the Hindu gods in Record of Ragnarok. It’s just so bad and I hate it and I can’t understand why other people don’t see these designs and portrayals as bad. Also I really do need to tell you that you’re amazing and I really love your videos.
Also, about those comments about non Indian characters doing Indian voices, what is even their point, are they saying non Indians are better at being Indians than Indian themselves. Your life would be infinitely easier if you find the person of the ethnicity to do their job, no brainer. But apparently the "specific voice" that show runners want, looking for the specific talent that'd be the basis of hire that can do that voice they talk of, itself is a stereotypical voice. That's the problem. What do you mean you want the Indian character to be more Indian lol. Even if you're broke group of white dudes given the task of dubbing an entire show that'd be aired everywhere, you'd still do a better job by NOT trying to immitate other people and what you think would sound like them. That's why you criticized even Indian cast trying to be "Indian", which they just glanced over.
thats Hollywood for you like how every American Black person has a hood accent or every Caribbean has a Jamaican accent or every Hispanic and South American has a Mexican accent just lazy clownish tap dancing writing and directing. i used to go to castings for Haitian woman/girl but wouldnt get the part cause my accent was to Haitian and the audience wouldnt understand it they wanted me to speak with a Jamican accent to play a Haitian character lol
Felt like sharing this. With Apu it feels like people don't even know who the character is. A non-Indian voice actor doing a stereotypical accent for 'comedic purposes' just feels wrong in itself, it boggles me people don't see that. Comparatively if it were an Indian character voiced by someone who is not Indian but didn't use a stereotypical accent then it would be alright, but its the fact that this unrealistic stereotype was used for comedy just doesn't sit right. As you said Karra, they didn't need to get rid of his character completely, they could have hired another voice actor, but I guess the team felt it would be the best thing to do.
damn, im amazed how many times ppl play the “voice actors are just actors!!! race doesnt matter!” card… MAYBE in a world where black and brown people are overwhelmingly voicing white characters that could be true… but guess what racial category MOST voice actors fall into!… and don’t shout Phil Lamarr or Kevin Michael Richardson, or Cree Summer, you’re cherrypicking.
