I’m actually Methodist but I’m holding on because we are now a global Methodist congregation and are taking the gospel seriously. I was doing jail ministry one evening and one of the inmates brought up the verses about examining ourselves as we were doing communion. That conversation changed the way I view the sacraments. It was a blessing.

I live in an area where finding a church is difficult. Speakers at conferences or guest speakers at churches often say "As soon as I entered this town I felt an extreme heaviness, there is spiritual death in this area like I've never experienced." Basically all of them say that. My wife and I have tried so many churches , and we're in one now that is okay but it's a start-up (as opposed to a plant). What we have ran into is that despite having low expectations and genuinely wanting to be in a permanent body, every single church we've found that is orthodox in their teaching either has congregations bearing very, very little fruit or they have put people in eldership that just don't meet the requirements of 1 Timothy 3. We are giving these churches tons of grace, but then we see something like an elder exploding at their kids or a pastor with wildchild adult kids. Other churches are full of people who aren't thriving, they can't seem to move past the phase of being just out of addiction, there's a lot of older single people, and many people seem to be chasing a spiritual high while simultaneously not being real grounded in Scripture. We did find a great church, but it's over an hour away. We have a strong desire to serve in the church home we find, but being so far away means we can't do mid-week small groups and we can't serve on the worship team (as we're both musicians). This is really important to us, so do we just move?

We shifted to Closed Members because there were some of the WOKE aspects visiting churches in our area and demanding equal access and threatening lawsuits. There is a state law pending, not passed, that says if we offer it publicly it has to have equal access but if we close it to members that is 'private club's. We do offer to associate regular attendees (family members visiting).

For the guy struggling with theological wishywashiness, remember that ecumenism is a strength, not a weakness. I'm very charismatic, yet I still have a deep appreciation for what Pastor Keith does, as well as Doug Wilson, Al Mohler, Jonathan Pageau, and Trent Horn, all people with extremely different theological convictions to myself. I've struggled to pin down exactly what I believe in terms of soteriology, but that's okay. Believers must be settled THAT Christ saves, not necessarily HOW He saves. Instead of worrying about the fine details of your own theology, rejoice that the Father has blessed the world with beautiful diversity of (orthodox) thought. The body has many parts to do many jobs, and the Body of Christ is no different. Let the Spirit guide you, and be okay if He guides you down the path of ecumenical thought over specifically settled theology.

@Dilley_G45 God doesn't use sacrements to dispense his grace. He does that Himself. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. (John 6:37, ESV)

@ogmakefirefiregood Saying God doesn't use sacraments to dispense his grace doesn't make sense. That is really just an unproven assertion unless you can demonstrate otherwise Christians always believed this is how Christ's grace was applicated according to Church history. Maybe you didn't get the memo, but Christianity has been around for 2000yrs and yes, God's grace has been communicated by sacraments. The Church always understood this fact. This isn't my opinion this is your own religion talking to you lol. I'm not making any assertion, we have writings from early Christians confirming this.
@HusGoose
@HusGoose 2 месяца назад
@@dman7668 no, gods grace is not fungible or dispensed through sacraments, praying to dead saints or anything of the like. The burden of proof is on you to prove it because it’s not in scripture. This is your Roman Catholic roots coming through. This behavior was not enshrined until 1215 at council. It was then popularized by Aquinas, the primary theologian of the RCC - whose life’s work (according to him) was but of straw (worthless). Luther missed that memo and just carried it forward. Saying “2000 years of church history proves” to people who know you are misrepresenting history may work on non-denom normies but not people who know church history. What you believe is an error in need of reformation. Traditions, traditions.
@ogmakefirefiregood
@ogmakefirefiregood 2 месяца назад
@dman7668 you have no idea who you are talking to. That's the problem with the internet. I was born and raised Catholic. For 10 years I served as a Deacon at St. Mary's Catholic Church Pensacola Diocese. I know the church fathers better than most. Jesus is King. His Word is superior to all the church fathers combined. You are mistaken because you know neither the Scriptures nor the Power of God.

8:40 I understand what you are saying here, but my follow up question is, do you have any method for discerning whether someone is under discipline from their local congregation or otherwise disqualified to cross your verbal fence? If not, it seems that there is a fence, but the gate is wide open, so to speak. Also, if you do happen to know if a person is under discipline as you said, and they attempt to partake anyway, what do you do?
@ConversationswithaCalvinist
@ConversationswithaCalvinist 2 месяца назад
Those are good questions. Our Deacons serve communion there was a person that we knew wasn’t supposed to partake we would instruct them, simply not to put it before them. As far as the discipline question goes, there is a sense in which we are unable to know for sure. The fence is a warning to them, but if they choose to ignore the warning, that would be upon them.

You have significantly more grace for Flowers and Brown than I could ever muster. Flowers is just a one trick pony that has already surrendered to Pelagianism and is rapidly approaching Open Theism. Dr. Michael Brown exposed himself during the failed Brownsville ‘revival’ and has since devolved into an apologist for the worst of the Charismatic movement. He is a very learned man and yet he continues to disappoint and fail the Body of Christ. It took many years for him to finally acknowledge that Benny Hinny was , if fact, a false teacher. Was it worth it ? Only God knows. He still maintains that Sid Roth is a. Solid brother In the Lord Mike Winger is well-intentioned but has flip-flopped over the years. His continued disdain for Calvinism coupled with his open admiration for Flowers caused me to stop listening to him several years ago. He has done some solid work regarding the Passion ‘translation’, the role of women in the church and most recently, his expose of Benny Hinn are laudable but not enough the re-gain my follow. He is also a pastor at Calvary Chapel church so his theology is understandably weak since it is based on little more than the ‘Calvary Chapel Distinctives’ and a two page statement of beliefs. (I am convinced that absent a robust and extensive confession of faith (WCF, LBC, etc.), perseverance in the troubling times to comes will be quite difficult) Perhaps I am being a caustic but my patience for accommodationists has worn thin

@@ConversationswithaCalvinist You can't do that to people. It's like if James White suddenly changed the Radio Free Geneva opening and eliminated all the sound clips! Incidentally, what did it used to say after "manly drink"? Never could quite understand the line. Oh, and one more to be brief. Would you say the pastor who was saying that reformed believers should be excised from the church would be guilty of sowing discord or would you say the context needs to be delimited to just the general theological beliefs of the church itself and what their statement says? Personally, I think those who are Reformed that say all Arminians are false believers and vice versa would be guilty of sowing discord within the body as a whole, but where do we draw the line between defending the truth and being guilty of "discord"?

If the lords supper is merely symbolic, then how can one be eating and drinking judgment on themselves for receiving something that is merely symbolic? That doesn't make sense does it? Maybe there is a better explanation then the Lord's supper being merely being a symbol. We can see from this writing that the symbolic view of the Lord's supper wasn't what Christians believed. 👇 For not as common bread and common drink do we receive these; but in like manner as Jesus Christ our Saviour, having been made flesh and blood for our salvation, so likewise have we been taught that the👉 food which is 👉blessed by the prayer of His word, and from which our blood and flesh by transmutation are nourished, is the flesh and blood of that Jesus who was made flesh.” Justin Martyr, First Apology, 66 (c. A.D. 110-165
@maxxiong

Silly reasoning here. God can judge people for sin without the sin itself bringing automatic consequences. I think Keith is in minority on this among reformed baptists actually cuz his church is not 1689. The 1689 teaches spiritual real presence, ie. those who receive in faith truly receive Christ spiritually.

"Should I be a Calvinist?" Well for the most part it doesn't matter? I would say no because I think Calvinism is anti-Biblical, but your theological stances really only matter in material terms insofar as they effect your behavior. By and large, most Calvinists do not have their belief in Determinism or Election significantly alter how they behave. Most don't even take the implications into consideration when interpreting other Bible verses. So as much as I want to say "don't be a Calvinist", this is not a hill that strikes me as worth fighting over.

What do you think Calvinism is ???
@HusGoose
@HusGoose 2 месяца назад
@@Dilley_G45 no I think I’ll pass. Luther was an instrumental saint used of the Lord, but a dramatically flawed one. His ham-handed interpretations of key texts have their limits. Luckily, we have the text itself. As far as verses you cite no, they’re incorporated. I was baptized in the Jordan just like every born again Christian seeks to be baptized wherever practicable… thief in the cross or those on their deathbed notwithstanding. We just don’t suppress entire chapters like chapters Roman’s 8&9. Also chapters 1-3 of Ephesians that completely undermine Lutheran understanding of Gods involvement in salvation. Further, I’ve known confessional Lutherans who have been baptized, subsequently apostatized, then died in their sins. They were clearly not effectually “saved” by baptism. Nor their Lutheran confessions. Plus, from a public standpoint, half your “one true church” is made up of LGBTQ+ activists who have been baptized and consider themselves confessional. So how pray tell does the reality of your church comport with reality of the text? The state of your church makes sense in reformed theology, in that it’s full of reprobates that do religious works, recite confessions, take communion and be dipped in water. All these actions are not effectual but rather serve as an indictment on those who participated.
