Nurse Bass was discussing his first day of clinical in CVICU and was a bit taken back by what appeared to be a hierarchy. He asked if it really existed. So here is my response explaining the culture of CVICU as it relates to the CV surgeons.

It's a double -edged sword. There are surgeons out there that give other surgeons a bad name. We need to keep in mind the magnitude of their responsibilities, but to not be a pushover when they are being unreasonable. Thanks for not going on a witch hunt and explaining if from all angles. Great post my friend. Great post.

+Sean Dent I was going to bring up the not being a pushover in the video but then it would have been much longer than I wanted, but I'm glad you brought it up. The surgeon I talked about in the vid as the example was someone who actually respected nurses who were steadfast because he felt like he could trust them. It was one of the silly ways he tested nurses. During the vetting process as it were the nurse might be right on the money about something but he would play mind games to see if he could pressure he nurse to change his or her mind. If the nurse held his or her ground through the process eventually he would relent and tell the nurse that he or she was right all along. That nurse that was steadfast had passed the test.

+Sean Dent With the real young nurses I also think the feeling come from a generational gap as well. Most CV surgeons are probably in the age bracket of the parents of a typical new grad.

+Keepit Real, RN interesting observation. In the end.. this scenario is very common and a necessary evil in the overall scheme of things to provide optimum care to the patient. But tact and mutual respect is a two way street. We're all on the same team. :)

I love doctors that are straightforward. Makes it so much easier... just a yes sir or yes mam and do my job. Newbies are usually too sensitive and take time to adapt to what is basically a professional attitude.

I've been in the biz for so long now I don't take crap from anyone. I treat everyone with respect and expect the same in return.
