I NEED that Essential Ellison volume for my shelf. He's rarely disappointed me thus far, and I'd love to read even more Ellison.

I got The Assassin's Cloak when you first recommended it and read it straight through and bought many individual diaries that I firt read in this volume. I recently got a Kindle version of Brian Eno's "A Year with Swollen Appendices." Fabulous!

Ah, The Colossal Conan. How bitter I am that I don’t own it. There is no use even calling on Crom. He sends dooms, not gigantic hardcover comics.

Someday there will be a colossal compendium of every issue of The Mighty Thor, thousands of thick glossy pages. And only those who are truly worthy will be able to lift it.

Steve, when you spoke of the literature which we never got, it made me think of a story by Pohl and Kornbluth called Mute Inglorious Tam about a preliterate man with a soaring imagination.

I had the The Colossal Conan, until I tried to read it. It is ridiculously heavy and impossible to hold. Had no problem selling it.

Steve, what do you think of the recent Norton Anthology of English Renaissance Drama? Is it, too, guilty of the things you say. It’s such a beautiful volume, and I’m contemplating buying it outright; a comprehensive one volume collection of non-Shakespeare dramatists sounds delightful, especially coming off of Shaketube.

I haven't looked at it - I just assumed it was a lost cause!

"The Assassin's Cloak". No need to buy it full price - it's widely available in secondhand bookshops. One of them is mine, returned. I got a copy on Steve's recommend, but be aware that the physical copy takes up a great deal of space, is heavy to hold and there are a limited number of people quoted so I found it tiresome to get the same people quoted again and again. (A book of quotations will give you a much wider spread of people). I think it's more enjoyable for readers of biography who have read in depth about the people quoted. My version was the original one - very outdated - there is a 2020 updated version with more recent quotes which might be better. I would say "Look before you buy".

I of course stand by my recommendation. If any of these books were ‘tiresome,’ I wouldn’t have put them on this list!

@saintdonoghue what nonsense, who's read in depth on 150+ people in the anthology. I thought it was fantastic and Dawn Powells entries so funny I bought her diaries.

@@saintdonoghue There is NO insult implied to your judgment, Steve - I am a regular listener and often add books to my tbr on the strength of your recommendations. Of course you recommend the best books as you find them. I was simply giving an honest expression of my own reading experience of one book. (Still a fan).

I hate the revision of history, but truth is truth, artistic women was a tiny, tiny minority even amonst rich women. Get kver it, it is the past. I have bot the Quiller Couch edition and yours. I like "Q" for that very idiosyncratic tendency you mentioned.
