Our Conservative MP mischaracterises and dismisses South Devon Primary, saying "it's the perfect embodiment of socialism - we'll select one candidate for you then ask you to vote for them". We asked people in Dartmouth to respond.
I miss the days before our politics became so Americanized. Because that's exactly what this "Socialism" comment is, the kind of rubbish usually shouted at an American primary to wind up reactionists.
I don't think it's quite the same as the US Republican tactic. Over there, they've had nothing approaching socialism for generations, few know anything about it. All most Americans know is their right-wing media brought them up to be scared of it. Our Tories and right-wing media are a bit behind on that. So what they're doing is old-fashioned mud-slinging. Slap the label on anything people might not like and hope it sticks. That works a lot of the time with our electorate, even when it makes no sense, but I think they're out of luck this time.
Yes he was right. Only problem is there is no other party, possibly with the exception of Reform, that is likely to be able to do the things he said. Human nature is the problem. Its not a particular party. No strong leaders & a woke world do not help either.
I am 61 years old. For the first 55 years or so, there was one special thing about our health system - you could not tell people apart, by looking at their teeth. Now, for about the last 6 years in particular, we will be able to tell who is rich and who is not, by the state of their teeth. This, is a low point, and not trivial, and merely one indicator among many. I could say, King Charles won’t have a letter 2 months into Chemo, saying he’s down to Statutory Sick Pay, as only the directors contracts allow bottomless support for such a serious issue. And, of course, not forgetting the DWP attitude, that PIP is NOT awarded to those on chemo who are weakened and have to go in an ambulance for the slightest infection, because - wait for it - CHEMOTHERAPY IS NOT A SICKNESS. Enough said. The country is broken, and we’ve had radical governance for about 9 years now. What we really need is a ‘conservative’ government with a small ‘c’ !!! That is NOT the Conservative party. This is a true thing, just think on the radical moves in recent years. Take care all.
I agree with this... In other Countries, you can always tell who are the English... The locals have superb white teeth, and the Brits have dirty, bad teeth in comparison... Check out all Americans... It is true...
Well said that last guy We in Scotland saw through the Tories in the mid 50’s and have never voted them in at GE since then. Unfortunately our vote means nothing and working people in England for some reason that is alien to us vote for them. Vote tactically at GE to get every Tory possible out.
I think you've hit the nail on the head with that comment. This isn't about what is best for the country, or people, it's about pure ideological hatred of Torys and a desire to hurt them forever by ensuring they and anything they stand for should never have a place in Britain. The Single Party Socialist State Britain, you all want, and fuck anyone else.
How ridiculous of Mangnall. What a puerile statement from him. I was expecting a bit more…like the threat of Corbynism, Marxism and so on. 😂….He just doesn’t like our corrupt FPTP voting system being used against him does he? When we have a proportional voting system we won’t have to bother with such tactics…but needs must! With FPTP we have to vote with our heads; with PR we will be able to vote with our hearts. ❤
@@tomspyro5795 a pertinent point, but who's to say PR wouldn't have reduced the rage and sense of being ignored that undoubtedly fed into support for UKIP. In any case, given the level of support UKIP managed we have to acknowledge they were equally ill served by FPTP
Living in a sea of blue in Lincolnshire, I so wish the opposition parties could band together to remove these under performing self serving fools. Good luck to democracy in South Devon Primary. I will watch with great interest and no little envy that your individual votes are not wasted like mine always is.
Anthony Mangnall should be ashamed of making such misleading comments. He probably doesn't know much about socialism so we can forgive that egregious misrepresentation, but he knows full well that it is impossible to "impose" a candidate on a constituency. Unless of course it's a safe Tory (or Labour or Libdem) seat...
Unlike the glorious sunlit uplands of Brexit trade barriers, shit filled rivers, and a collapsing NHS of Tory Britain. I would jump for joy but my hips are fractured and i can't get an ambulance.
You’re so right. I just can’t understand why people think that calling someone a Lefty is somehow derogatory. I would love someone to describe what the UK would be like today if there was no left wing ideology.
For the last election, Totnes Constituency Conservative Party selected one candidate for you - Mangnall - and asked you to vote for him. Blimey, that sounds like the embodiment of socialism!
The Un-socialist British Billionaires Party (known as the Nasti party) talking about how soclialism is tyrannical and undemocatic?!? Wow irony much? Note the reference to the National-socialist German Workers Party :D
This is an opportunity for those of us whose priority right now is to get the Tory's out. We keep splitting the vote between three parties: the Greens, the Labour party and the Lib Dems. This will help us find the party that the majority of us involved or connected to this project think has the best chance of winning ... instead of the old way - listening to a few friends, gossip and polls - and then making a guess.
hopefully the cruelty and deceit will be soon be gone and the wreckage of this country can start to be addressed by politicians who care about the welfare of the people.
Yes, I quit the UK after being chased down for my apparent Poll Tax bill, was abroad for 1 1/2 years but, that didn't count in Thatchers England, hope it works out for all the decent people!
Londonised Devon is a ruin of it's former self, the one I was born into of nearly no incomers telling us what to do and how much beautiful land to destroy for their houses!
Anthony Mangnall MP’s remark there was incredibly patronising of, insulting towards very many of his constituents and potential voters. It had the air of supreme arrogance and self-entitlement about it! I suspect that Mangnall and his Conservative Constituency Association (CCA) is privately panicked that their main political opponents are now organising to unseat them from the constituency. For many years, they've benefitted, electorally - and thus politically -from a fragmented main political opposition. This Primary drive not threatens that political advantage Mangnall and his local (and national) Conservatives have enjoyed for so long!
This type of Democracy worked for Von de Leyen when all other candidates backed out and she was 'voted' President of the European Commission Who then go on to 'choose' the members of the ECHR AND THE ECJ.
Please don't forget the year's they've been in power and how we are living now, and just about now. Brexit, Covid, Cost of living crisis caused by the Tories, And rich people getting richer while people suffer and die.250,000 in Covid. That's just the start. From Austerity to Austerity in 14 years.
Austerity is simply a codeword for low taxation of the rich. Austerity is simply the Government not living up to their responsibilities to run the country, and the economy, properly.
Grow up. Brexit, unfortunately was voted for, Covid was not down to the tories and the cost of living was in a major part due to Russia invading Ukraine plus nutty Truss. Most of the western European economies have fared badly too. The Tories have been dire but get your facts right.
Vote for brexit & you're a clever elector who understands everything. Vote Labour & you're thick & being conned. A perfect example of Tory logic (& hypocrisy)
@@Guanajuato65All parties now are the same all establishment for the establishment and they despise the electorate. As for Labour read Paul Emburys Despised why the modern left loathe the working class. Tben read your final sentence!
MP says that people getting together and choosing one candidate to impose on the electorate is undemocratic. Yet he was chosen as a candidate by a group of people getting together to choose him. Also, nobody in the constituency who is not a member of the Conservative Party had any say in May, Johnson, Truss or Sunak becoming Prime Minister - or any other member of the government.
Socialism is an economic theory about state ownership of certain vital services. Not about increasing the amount of democracy under an unfair and outdated electoral system which disproportionately favours the Tory party. And, his argument about candidate selection, isn’t that what they do anyway? Put up one candidate then say vote for this person?
I have said for 15 years that we need a new system of government , one that is honest and capable of getting the jobs done in the best interest of the English people. The present government has done just about the worst it could do having open borders, letting hundreds of thousands of foreigners into the country ....a National Security and Health nightmare...having.no idea what to do with all these immigrants who have increased demands on our already struggling utilities. Voting choices are limited now, but I think one should go along to the polling station and see what choice they have.
Thing is though immigrants are a net financial benefit to this country. We are an aging population and need to bring more young working people to work in Health, Social care and everything else. You can have a debate about whether you want immigration but you seriously need to look elsewhere for the causes of crumbling/failing infrastructure and services. This is the irony of Sunak's divisions speach last night. The Tories caused it all by the constant kicking of immigrants as someone else to blame for their unbelievable failure...
Not one Devon accent it sounded like metropolitan London. As ever urban only please try and speak to people who aren't like yourself go into working class area's and speak to ordinary locals for a change.
I’m born and bred in Plymouth. I don’t have a Devonian accent. I’m not wealthy either. If you knew anything about Dartmouth as well then you might realise that even the working class probably mostly speak with a similar accent. What do you hope they will say in an Apple cruncher accent? Let’s continue to vote for the hooray Henry tories? I don’t think devonians are that stupid, whatever their accent is.
How do you account for the fact that satisfaction levels for the NHS were at a record high in 2010 at the end of the Labour government then? And now the underfunded NHS is on its knees? Meanwhile, there were 29 Uk billionaires in 2010 but now there are 171. Do you think you might have fallen for the propaganda in their media? amp.theguardian.com/business/2021/may/21/number-of-billionaires-in-uk-reached-new-record-during-covid-pandemic

Silky woman. "My vote for the only candidate that I can vote for, is provided by the powers in control". 2nd guy "Rebuild eveything!", with lower taxes. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Vote Reform UK. The last hope to save this country. If you conservatives are bad. Just think what labour will do. 14 labour council currently bankrupt including Wales Devolved government.
The reason that councils are struggling is because the Tory Government stripped them of financial support, while leaving them with the same obligations to provide services. It is a direct consequence of Austerity, which is just a policy to enable the rich to avoid paying their fair share of the tax burden necessary to run the country.
