Great video, thanks for the info 👍🐶👍. I've had many APBT's over the years, and not one was ever left where it could hurt someone ( unless someone broke in). I've seen some that would kill anything with 4legs, but wouldn't bite a man even if he broke in. One of my biggest Pit's lived with cats and small dogs, but absolutely hated men( only men, not women) I'm so sick of people and they're misinformation. APBT'S are one of my favorite breeds and I can't ever see a time in my life going forward where I won't have at least one!!! I had a 75lb female save my life once when a neighbor's large very aggressive male Rottweiler got out and charged us. She put herself in between us and went in to attack mode. That Rottweiler thought better of it and went back to his yard to wait for the owner to let him back in. She got a fat steak and a pack of hot dogs for dinner that night!!!! She lived to be 18years old before passing from old age in my arms( damn I miss that Dawg😭😭😭!!!)

Truth. There are also a lot of “dogmen”that had no business owning this breed. I know for a fact dogmen that did cull. The ones that didn’t, or ones that abuse them, and yes it does occur are the problem, not the breed itself. I can’t stress enough however that what you read in game dog magazines should be taken with a grain of salt, including stories of man biters. It would highly uncharacteristic of the breed, and for the vast majority it would take a lot of work to make one human aggressive, but yes those idiots do exist. There are plenty of jobs for this breed to do that doesn’t require biting a human, even if it is just a sleeve.

Culling man aggressive dogs is not a myth. Some people make that argument because some famous fighting dogs were man aggressive, but those individuals were extraordinarily talented. It's like athletes. The guy on the practice squad gets into trouble, his career is likely over. Where as the absolute stud gets in trouble, he gets chance after chance I know quite a few of the old breeders personally who would cull an entire litter of man aggressive gamedogs. So when a man aggressive dog came about, what would often happen is the breeder would evaluate his talent as a pitdog. If he was average he would be culled. If he was well above average he would be kept in "spite" of the man aggression.

Tudors Blackjack was a man biter, however imagine if he was never bred? Bolio wasn't a true man biter, he was a biter when held to long in the corner, Zebo and Pit General were complete man biters , Virgil was an excitable biter, a lot of those red dogs were man aggressive my house dog right now is Clouse/Hemphill/Wilder x Redboy and his whole litter are very everything aggressive, however none of those pups were sold and that particular breeding was done on purpose, two of those dogs are on Long hauling rigs one is on a tow truck, and one is on a junkyard the other two were kept by myself and the other breeder, this convo is endless I could go on for hrs, I'm not a fan of people biters however imagine if some of the most famous Bulldogs in history were never bred because of it, Bullyson being one of them. Great discussion topic. Recently I’ve been thinking about what I wanted to do with my nearly 3 year old cottingham dog. She has an extremely high drive and I’m worried if let’s say someone breaks into my house and my dog ends up running in the street loose. I’ve never trained her to bite a person but I fear her drive is so high that being loose will get her excited enough to get into trouble. It would be easy for me to get rid of the dog if she was of low quality but this is not the case. I’ve been in a bite suit against police GSD and mals and will say pound for pound the apbt is more impressive.

Emerson, Kosta, and LoLo, Indian Bolio was produced by Klaus, and raised by Maurice Carver. Bennett Clayton got the dog from Carver. The dog was sent to Floyd Boudreaux, who conditioned him for his match. Indian Sonny got the dog from Mr. Clayton. The dog was stolen from Indian Sonny. While in the hands of the guys that stole him, Bolio bit a kid...couldn't keep the dog any longer, and brought the dog to Mr. Patrick. Mr. Patrick witnessed Bolio display aggression towards other children. If you would like to verify the information about Bolio getting man aggressive with Mr. Patrick yourself, let me know. I can connect you with him. Patrick himself states, "he was aggressive to people that were younger than 12." Now obviously a dog doesn't know if a person is 12 or not, so I said kid...but those are Patrick's exact words. And he also says that while he was not aggressive to him (Patrick) or other adult men, when he was in a frenzy to get his target, he would redirect and bite his handler to be released. Now, you can dismiss the redirecting if you want, I have no problem with that...but you cannot dismiss the aggression to children. The fact is, this was part of Bolio's history. Secondly, Bolio was a legitimate 1xW, and I shouldn't have referred to him as a 2xW, so I will edit that out since it wasn't official; however, there is a bit more to Bolio's history than the 1xW than his official record. It is well known that Bolio went into a few dogs that were much bigger than him. It is documented 15 # bigger. Mr. Patrick told me the story of that as well. While Bolio was rolled several times at an Indian reservation while in the hands of Indian Sonny, one particular time Mr. Patrick saw Indian Sonny put Bolio up against a Bullyson/Eli Jr bred dog that outweighed Bolio by well over 15#. Patrick said Bolio, who had a match weight of 43# in his official match, was around 45# at the time, and the Bullyson/Eli Jr. dog was "as big as a game dog came, and had a chain weight of well over 60#." Indian Sonny owned both dogs, and put the dogs together. I am not condoning any of this...just reporting what happened way back in the early 70's. The Bullyson/Eli Jr. dog had to be picked up to save its life. It was this story that is why Bolio is accredited to have "handled dogs that were 15# bigger," for the dog he was officially matched into weighed the same as Bolio...which was 43#.

People who say the APBT can't, or even SHOULDN'T, be trained in protection are just silly and uninformed. I think the main reason you don't see more of them is simply because they haven't been tested. The shepherd dogs started out as herders, and I think it's safe to say they can perform the job of protection pretty well, so I don't see why you can't find good protection dogs out of gamedogs (even though many already have). Also, just because a dog is friendly doesn't mean they can't be a good protection dog. Some of the nastiest, meanest biting dogs I've met have been perfectly friendly in everyday life.
@jojo4rmdabronx
@jojo4rmdabronx 8 месяцев назад
I would argue that the issue isn’t with the APBT’s ability to do so but the danger and liability. APBTs are much cheaper and thus easily accessible to the general public which is a bad thing. If your average turd had has man biting dogs and can’t afford a proper fence , society will have issues. I would also argue that GSD or mals are better suited for it because they are more intelligent and easier to train for control.

Good video. Thanks Joseph Colby, pit bull fancier-fighter, breeder, author offers advice in his book the American Pit Bull Terrier about shipping dogs by rail. He recommends that notes be attached to the crate. The only example he uses, "Dog Will Bite". Read excerpts from Sporting Dog Journal. Read comments on dog yards videos of the past. There are descriptions of how and why dogs ended up in the "sand pile" I have never seen mention of any a dog that was culled for attacking a human or child. They died because they were not killing dogs well enough . It's cruel and dangerous to the bully dogs themselves to put them into situations that might get them stabbed and shot for doing what they're bred to do. Spreading the nanny dog myth and the "manbiters were culled" garbage is cruel to pit bulls. In one of Richard Stratton's pit bull books, he writes about famous fights, decade by decade. One fight was between Wallace's King Cotton and Corvino's Blackie. Blackie was disliked because he was a man eater and it was thought by some that man-eaters weren't dead game, they would stop fighting if dying. The drive for pit bulls to keep killing even after suffering fatal wounds and exhaustion garners the supreme admiration of the sadistic dog men. No mention is made by Stratton that any pit breeder cared about human welfare! Blacke was lead into the pit on three leashes held betwern three men. The pit itself was wired over to protect the spectators. So much for man eaters being culled! Not. The decade? 1950s.

For an established breed like the APBT, I like our APBTs to be ADBA registered. This puts an independent party involved and allows one to trace back as far as they wish to go...and allows for a system of "checks and balances" so to speak.

Lee, How much does genetics influence aggression vs nurturing? Curious on your thought regarding both man aggression and animal aggression.
@APBT-Bandog
@APBT-Bandog 5 лет назад
Nurturing is the trigger, and genetics is the gas. That's my opinion. If a dog never has the first a conflict, a lot of issues can be managed easily...but once they have a conflict...or worse a few...the trigger gets quicker and quicker because their genetics plays a huge factor. More reason for responsible ownership. Great dogs if you know how to handle and control them, but not for the novice or inexperienced person that really doesn't understand K9 behavior, and that thinks it is all in how you raise them.
@elithepitbulldog2209
@elithepitbulldog2209 4 года назад
American Sentinel K9, LLC “how you raise them” is extremely important. Don’t ever overlook that fact. I’ve been around the dog 60 years. The one I have now will absolutely destroy a coyote, but on the other hand is one of the few domestic dogs in the neighborhood that can walk off leash without getting into trouble his recall is rock solid. . Can all game dogs walk off leash? No, but nor can any other breed. The percentage of game dogs that want to kill any dog they see is no greater than any other breed if you properly socialize them. Hence, HOW YOU RAISE THEM. If you keep them on a chain 24/7 without socializing with other dogs, he’s most likely going to be dog aggressive, as will any other breed. Some of the best pit dogs were totally docile outside the box historically, so the dogs own personality is at play as well. The smartest dogs often totally stable, unless attacked of course and this where the DNA comes into play. DNA doesn’t necessarily want to fight, it just means they are good at it. Eli, in my avatar was attacked by a Rottweiler-great Dane mix and took care of business pretty quickly, with the big dog headed down the road defeated and tail tucked. I got my dog off him by recall, and not a break stick. It depends on the dog. I absolutely do not promote APBT for human protection (other than natural protection if the life of his owner) But specifically training them for bite work. NEVER If you want a protection dog get a breed specifically bred for that purpose. I’ve never known a human aggressive game dog by the way. Oh, and one other thing, Eli is also service trained for hearing impaired, search and rescue, and is a highly regarded therapy dog. It’s a combination of intelligence, gameness or willingness to work, natural temperament based on the dogs individual personality, and training and environment (how he was raised) It’s one third DNA, one third the individual dogs personality, and one third how you raise them

I don’t hog hunt now that I have 5 grandkids, all to young to hunt, but I do use Eli to keep the coyotes away from my birds. He’s a beast and hates other animals but is respectful of pet dogs and cats. The smart ones can do that. They know the difference between game animals and pets. Well you should of added "it not just the pitbull breed that can be man aggressive". I came across a few pitbull in my life and training was the key difference between them. One was ok but more training would of been better,next par was 2-3 years old jumping and nipping at people cause the only contact they had was the people in the house. The last one was well trained cause it was chill after if got to know a person,would play tug a war and would stop when told to many of time back to back with out hesitation. I watched a baby craw all over the dog and it just laid their for a solid 30 minutes. Yes PITBULLS can be man aggressive but it all dogs can be man aggressive.

@ Duke Nuke Em, Bullyson himself was a man biter however he was bred so good and produced so well that they had to breed him and he consistently bread those traits into his offspring, 30+yrs ago we had Bullyson dogs and crosses and every so often we get pure man biter however those crosses into the Mtn. Man "Ch" Homer ×Hargroves "Ch" Rufus dogs we had were so good that we kept the occasional man biter from the litter to keep it from getting into the hands of a novice however it was very rare for any one of the general public to get one of our pups. Do you think the APBT has a large amount of terrier blood in it? I don't, I firmly believe working terriers in the 1800's would have been very soft dogs/bayers, I see no reason why anyone would have bred very hard terriers in those days except for ratting competitions. I believe the ratting terriers which already had a fair amount of bulldog blood where probably mixed with the bulldog to reduce it's size, but only in small amounts. I've owned a few APBT/terrier crosses, a couple of patterdale x's and a jrt x, they couldn't compare in terms of jaw power and overall p4p strength to even my pet staffs of similar weights.

The 1800 were harder different times. Working dogs played a bigger roll back then compared to today. Dogs breeds decline over the years especially terriers!
@digs1223
@digs1223 5 лет назад
@@gamekr Hard terriers are a luxury, they get smashed to pieces every dig and need a load of time and care to recover, without anti-biotics most would die very young, not a dog you'd want if your livelihood relied on having a capable dog ready at any moment for pest control. A soft/baying type terrier can do the same job but much more consistently and is much more likely to live long enough to breed.

Yes I do...hence the "Bull-and-Terrier" references in the 1800's. Terriers had to be pretty rough in the field to protect crops from animals that kept families alive during the winter months, not just in ratting competitions. They didn't have pesticides and good fences back then. They needed to kill quick so they could grab the next one popping out. Watch some videos of terriers working in the crop fields were rats are out of control. Pretty impressive. I doubt they were used much on big game, but they had to dispatch small game very quickly because small pests that ate crops were in LARGE NUMBERS and would run out by the droves when the soil was turned over. If they didn't kill quick, many would get away and the problem wouldn't be managed. I think it was this need that led to ratting competitions in the first place.

@@APBT-Bandog i'm talking about sporting rat pit dogs, they won large amounts of money if they were good and would be well taken care of medically. If a farm terrier was too hard, it'd be dead very quickly if it was worked on badger regularly, it likely wouldn't even survive many encounters with strong foxes when underground. in that way those hard dogs would be culled from the terrier gene pool, we can afford the luxury of hard terriers today with modern medicine, also a dog being laid up injured for a month after every dig also isn't such an issue today. back then, those dogs would just die.

@@digs1223 You cannot argue with history...the people that were there wrote that the terrier was used...hence the Bull-and-Terrier. I believe them...and no offense, but who are we to argue when they were there. They had no reason to be dishonest about the breed's origins.

Sorry not hating on the apbt but man biters are not a myth they are real! I did own a apbt who was a man biter and he almost killed me in my house! Keep in mind people he was a man biter that doesn't mean all apbt's bite! He was my first APBT sadly i did have to sell him otherwise he would have killed me he hated men and only liked women! So i sold him to a single woman... ... im only 15 years old. Everytime he was close to my girlfriend or my mom or every woman he would start growling out of nowhere if i got close and get full psycho mode!
