That's a dandy little amplifier. Akai is popular here in North America as well. Nice LED job on the meters George. It is also nice to be service friendly as well. A good design all around I'd say.
Hey George, I love my AKAI U11, I use it for years. But it has one little problem, when i turn it on sometimes it has this noise crackling/distortion in coming out of the speakers. Then I pull the complete receiver a bit up on one edge and drop it really soft. Then the distortion is possibly going away. Then clear sound til MAX Volume. Additionally I have really big speakers on that AKAI. How can this work with that simple AMP and 20watts on 8ohm? If you want I can upload a Video to show you, would be so kind to know what to do. I have done mechatronics in Climate and cooling systems, but now i don`t know further what to do here. Best Regards
first thing i would do is to re-cap it with high quality capacitors. theres not too many in there, youd do the job in 20 minutes. See where your power supply voltages are then after that. A re-cap should dort it thoug...and clean all the rotary controls with contact cleaner too.
I've had one from 1982 until 2010. Good stuff for it's price. We actually bought it in an 'AKAI rack'. The AMU 11 was hence accompanied by a tuner, the ATK-11(L), a cassettedeck, the CS-M3, I still used that one today, and a turntable, the AP B21C. Yes I still know these model numbers by heart, 39 years later. About the speakers I only remember they looked good, but weren't very durable.
I had one of these back in 1981. A great piece of kit. Am looking to purchase this again so will be scouring ebay. Is ebay the best place to source this equipment? I also had the tuner and cassette with this. Sadly, never did have the timer... 😊
There is nothing inside it George!!! Well, one huge I.C. which I bet cost a bit. That is how things have gone though, huge box, full of air, but that keeps things cool. I had some Akai stuff, they always blew bulbs and they were never a standard bulb, always something that was unique to them! They are a nice shade of silver/grey and not in your face silver.
All the work happens in the stk module Bob. Bear in mind it's well over 35 years old. But a budget amp at the time. It sounds really nice. I quite like it.
@@GeorgeEI7KO As long as it has the sound you want it is a plus plus. Sometimes not much between budget and all singing and dancing one anyway, just more useless switches to go dirty.
Hi, i have a problem with akai am-u01 the problem is that when i press on mono both speakers plays music then balance is in middle but when i press stereo and i change balance to left side only left speakers plays but only the tweeter sounds and it disipare then i press on mono
Hi George, I have an AM-U01 which has blown a 10uf 35v cap on the right channel. Advice please, I ordered some caps to replace and they sent me 10uf 50v, can I put that in and should I do both channels? BTW I'm gonna do the VDU lamps too, I have led and fil to choose from though.
Yeah the 50v will be fine. I'd recap the whole thing, there ain't much in them. It's OK to go up in voltage as the cap will only charge to the voltage in the circuit.
@@GeorgeEI7KO hi George, just powered up and the amp, cap went boom again, although on the other channel this time.. I did replace both. There was no input and no load on the speaker out put, ie none connected. Thoughts?
