Agreed, amazing! I am slightly frustrated I can't do the same, not jealous, just frustrated. Not only you have to be seriously wealthy but, you also have to live in a country where you can have such a space and still live in or around a big city where you can work and earn enough money for that kind of project! You can forget about that in western Europe :(

That's what I was thinking when looking at the finished brass water jackets for the Benz. Would have loved to see the work as it was being done - kind of "how it's made" for car restorations.
@FelixIsMyName
@FelixIsMyName 7 лет назад
That brasswork was a piece of art!
@chicolittle5409
@chicolittle5409 7 лет назад
I agree. And that is going to be a beautiful engine when they are done. And it's kind of funny because Jay's shop is putting German engineering to shame. Because they should have used brass instead of steel in the first place.
@jb428
@jb428 7 лет назад
+Chico Little What do you know about engineering 100 years ago? American smartass...
@FelixIsMyName
@FelixIsMyName 7 лет назад
Chico Little Remember, it was not put together for longevity. It was built for racing and because of the rate of how cars were improving back then, it would have become obsolete within a year or two at best. Quite often racing/record attempt cars will be built with very fine tolerances and with whatever was the most cost effective material to use. I don't think it's about bad engineering, but that they would have never expected the car to still be around 100 years later. German engineering has always been a benchmark in industry since the turn of the last century. I think saying that Jay's garage and team are putting it all to shame is a little unfair and harsh. They have the luxury of hindsight as well as the 100 years of progress that has happened since the car was originally designed and put together.

@TheBrokenLife
@TheBrokenLife 7 лет назад
No. The typical process for repairing block cracks is to drill the crack and install tapered pins like a stack of dimes overlapping until the entire crack is "filled". Surprisingly, it's not "that" expensive to have done. It was about $100 an inch the last time I had one repaired (no idea if that's a linear scale of cost, but a 2" crack in a lifter valley was $200 when I had it done on a SBC block... this was in the late '90s though).

It's called 'pin welding', I'm surprised Jay never heard of it before.
@curbyweaver4606
@curbyweaver4606 7 лет назад
***** Right. You can't weld either cast iron or aluminum without risking it warping. Cast iron often degrades to graphite over time due to heat, so welding is OUT! Pin-welding is indeed using tapered threaded pins, drilling each hole partially into the two on either side creating a continuous surface. This process is a refinement of that process, but fundamentally the same.

Adore these restoration blogs, truly. Thank you for sharing these projects. With the 3d printer capability, also keep in mind the cost of the printer as well as the skillsets required to not only operate the equipment but also to correctly model the desired parts. Even amortized across years worth of parts made, all of those elements do not make for a $5 part.

What a wonderful workshop. This is a side of your life with the collection that deserves its own series. It's a complex and fascinating archeology of moving vehicles, in itself. Uniquely interesting. Because by doing it, you discover how these vehicles were made - and the many problems those ingenious people overcame in making them decades ago. I suspect this is almost the best part of the work today. You clearly love it.

Those cylinders on the Benz-Mercedes are familiar to anyone whose worked on radial aircraft engines like the Pratts or Wrights. They made then that way so they would eliminate the head gasket and have one less thing to worry about. There are early photos of cars like the Benz flying over the infamous bumps at Brooklands with the whole car airborne, something you didn't wasn't to do just before the turns.. Thanks for the updates Jay, and thanks for the video.

I love these updates. Jay, I have a source for those Mercedes W111 a/c knobs at a much lower cost, but it looks like you've got it covered. However, if you need the little colored plastic segments that go into the wood trim around them I can point you the right way there too. A close friend who sadly died a couple of years ago, was one of the top wood restoration guys in the country, specializing in Mercedes. In fact, I'm pretty sure he restored the wood that's in the Mercedes 600 you bought from Karl M. He spent a lot of time tracking down sources for little woodwork insert trim parts like those. By the way, those chrome wheel arch trims and belt line moldings on the 3.5 coupe are not original, but I'm sure you knew that.

Jay, all I can say is thank you for all your preservation efforts and history lessons and sharing your passions with us. Thank you also because it looks like you employ an army of people and you seem like a dream to work for. You source things you need to source and give people credit and you do things in house that you need to do in house. God bless you.

Asking such an amount of money for just a knob makes you more inventive and finally you did it better than the original... thanks mercedes.. Love this vid. Have a nice day Jay and your team..

seeing a complete car is always cool but the average person has no idea just how much can be involved in bringing a car back.you have several luxuries that simply were just Star Trek dreams 30 years ago. this is now a new fav vid from your series, Thanks.
