It's easy to forget how old he is. I know I will be truly hurt when he passes. I've been watching him my entire life. My step-dad and him watched him instead of Letterman just because he was a car guy. If I could take a trip anywhere in the world it would be to his garage. I think I would need a whole week to be truly satisfied .

I met Mr. Leno at a car show when I was 17 (1994). I had just begun building my first Mustang. He talked with me for probably 20 minutes, he gave me some wisdom concerning my rebuild (basically talked me out of doing what a lot 17 year olds would do😂). 3 years later I was in a car show in Rhode Island with the finished car. Mr. Leno was there and he remembered talking with me previously and congratulated me on the build. Even made some comments about my previous plans. I was blown away that he remembered the car. He is a real person, nothing fake about him. Just genuine.

The coolest part about cars is the history involved and things that went on during those times … the icing on the cake is owning and driving a old car …. That’s all I want is a daily older truck or car… I was saving money to buy something which took me years to save but then I lost my son in a car accident he was 20 years old … the car or truck I wanted would of eventually went to him … it squashed my dreams

Most car guys tend to think that the craft is dying and that nobody will ever be able to hand build components ever again. This is bullocks, there will always be passionate people able to learn it. It is the machine built components that we have to worry about, once the machine no longer exists it may become very hard indeed to reproduce the part.

Geez, Jay. Be careful! You are an American icon of cars .I enjoy learning from you here and I could listen all day. Back in the 70s ,I had a '57 Chrysler Saratoga (push button shifting) (near mint) and a '62 Chrysler Imperial I drove back from California with my wife and brother (RIP Kevin) after my wife and I hitch hiked to southern Cal from Michigan City, Indiana with 50 dollars ,a suitcase, and duffel bag. We really met some decent people for rides all the way. We got the mint Imperial for only 250 dollars because the sellers wife needed diapers for their baby! When I drove back to LaPorte ,Indiana, the first gas station I hit was where the attendant offered me 600 dollars on the spot for the car Travelled across the Mojave with a cool black dude and a long haired friend of his in a '63 Chevy Impala with cold Coors beer in the back seat with us. The longest wait for a ride was at St. Louis until a van with long hairs picked us up and let us party with them before continuing West. Heh. Keep the channel going, I dig it! I am a young 73 today. I have my Dad's 1967 Cadillac deVille convertible since I was 12 years old. He owned an auto body shop and always had a Cadillac. He was going to junk it when he bought a 1972 Fleetwood Brougham. I told him that I wanted it and I am now 58 years old. The car has over 200,000 miles on it and cosmetically is a beauty. I had the original 429 engine rebuilt last year for a small fortune of $11,000 bucks. The rear main seal is leaking so much that I can't really drive the car . It needs a quart of oil every 100 miles or so. It's just a damned shame that this car is undriveable due to a $30 piece of rubber ! I have contacted a Cadillac restoration shop that I hope will be able to solve my problem. If not, I will have to source another 429 engine and start from scratch again. Glad to see Jay back at work and keeping these old cars running.

Jay may wonder why we love him so much. Jay, you've been giving us so much for so many years. These later years of automotive and motorcycle coverage has been my favorite.

I'm the same age as you Jay and have owned and ridden motorcycle's since I was 15. I did an inventory of all the bikes owned and it was around 70 or so. Two years ago I found out I had cancer and with chemo and radiation and drugs, I had a problem with balance. Can't have a problem with balance on the 405 at 70mph ! (As if you can go 70 on the 405 these days). You talked about your injury's from the bike acedent and the face fire incident and it so related to me. After all the years building and restoring cars and bikes I have had to come to grips with my age, so I built my last car and sold my last bike. Keep on riding and building for the rest of us geezers Jay.. I'll be watching. PS: I met you three times, once at the Rock Store and twice at the spring fling Chrysler show. I spotted your Stanly was on fire and my friend Jay ran under the car with a blanket to put it out.

Jay is having a rough go lately. I appreciate your spirit, Jay - to push through the obvious pain in order to share the art and engineering as well as some of the skilled folks keeping these mechanical wonders in working order so they can be appreciated into the future.

You know that's gotta hurt. Much respect to Mr. Leno for giving us the tour of his cars and the wonderful people he has to repair them. Everything is so specialized and complicated. Just astonishing handiwork. Get well soon, Mr. Leno. And no more, "For my next act..." please. 😂 'The Chin' is tougher than steel wire, who knew? Jay knows. 👍👍

My whole life I've been drenched in automotive culture the majority of my family has worked for general motors I consider that bage of honor my father retired from general motors after 43 years all my aunts both of my grandparents work for general motors and I kind of take it upon myself to make sure that the knowledge of the history is passed forward. When I see episodes like this it makes me happy to see somebody out there promoting the history the technology the ingenuity of the past. Thank you give validation to my family history Thank you

Yeah we all get stressed out and sometimes bitter over the things happening in our lives but Jay, unlike the other late night hosts, kept bitterness, cynicism and contempt for those that may have been outside of the Hollywood leftist clique to himself or it was as foreign to him as it is to most of America. His love for the history of the automobile and the pure genius behind those that developed the industry from the ground up is so contagious and his generosity in sharing that love has enriched the lives of so many people. Thanks again Jay!

Jay, May you live to be a hundred +. (You have so many projects, you'll need to!) In the future, PLEASE be careful because we all love you, and want to see you around for a good long time. Stay healthy and keep up the good work, you're awesome! P.S. - I met you at Paramount Studios many years ago when you came there to check out the hydrogen cars that BMW had on display near the Bronson fountain, it was great to meet you and chat for a while. Good times.

I'm an old guy about a year younger than Jay. Well, I brought back my 83 Honda Nighthawk 650. It needed the front brakes and the hydraulic clutch rebuilt and it still needs some minor stuff fixed but It's fun to ride and pretty fast for what it is. In California, you have to pick where and when to ride because of the crazy traffic, and all my friends think I'm crazy for riding it. Idc, its a blast, and you only live once.

On top of all that, by all accounts he's a nice guy to boot too; it'd be a bucket list thing for me to meet him one day. Love these resto blogs! - Ed on the Ridge
