In this video I make a restoration of a Japanese vintage watch from the brand Citizen that has a hardened mineral glass. This watch was produced in 1968 and it's an automatic watch (it can wind itself when you use it). The movement is called cal 5204. This video is only ASMR.
This vintage Citizen watch was very dirty on the outside and inside, it also had some paint on it. So the cleaning had to be done piece by piece very thoroughly. Every cog tooth needed to be cleaned with wood sticks/peg wood. The hairspring was sticky with some dirt on it so that also needed cleaning several times.
After the restoration the Citizen watch works quite fine. It runs around a couple of seconds per day +/- which is stated by the timegrapher and the amplitude is around 235 degrees which I’ve heard is quite OK for Citizen. The barrel and the barrel cap hole needed to be adjusted with a staking tool (hammer time!).
My gear and other products, affiliate links*:
Citizen watches*: amzn.to/3LIzXKo
Tamron 28-75 f2.8 sony e (Not G2)*: amzn.to/3xEVvRj
Sigma 70mm f/2.8 dg macro sony e*: amzn.to/3O5xgCM
Timegrapher*: amzn.to/3xE2oT4
Work:
*Disassembly of the watch and check for problems along the way
*Inspection of all parts if they are worn or broken via the microscope
*Manual cleaning, pre-cleaning I do this with Rodico (Bergeon), some toothpicks, pegwood and with IPA (isopropyl alcohol). Then after pre-cleaning I let all parts be in benzine and later a double bath of IPA (Isopropyl alcohol) which wasn’t shown in the video. The pallet fork gets a bensin bath and a Epilame treatment, balance wheel will only be cleaned with benzine.
*Cleaning the hour/minute/second hand. A small cleaning of the dial, nothing more to do here but still it looks good.Cleaning the casing with an ultrasonic machine.
*During the video when checking the mineral glass it cracked (my mistake). I got very lucky that I found a guy online who could make me a new glass from a standard Sternkreuz MDH glass, he had to reduce the diameter to the correct size and then put a big chamfer on it, on the edge. It turned out to look awesome!
*Reducing the barrel hole, barrel cap hole with the staking tool
*Lapping/polishing of casing, no, in the middle of the project I didn't want to polish this, with the original machined surface and the "value" for me this watch has I didn't want to touch it.
*Assembly and oiling all relevant parts
*Checking if the movement works fine and then checking it with the timegrapher
If you like this video, I’m very happy if you push the Like button (maybe put a comment?) to my channel, more videos will come! Take care and thank you for your time!

I saw this watch in an online auction and got fond of it right away, it looked like it had been forgotten for many years. What's interesting about it is that it have a hardened mineral glass which I think is quite unusal for these old watches. And also it has Swedish weekdays! During the restoration every part needed to be looked over, every cog wheels teeths needed to be thoroughly cleaned. But...a mistake happened in the middle of this project, the hardened mineral glass from 1968 broke =(... In the end this restoration turned out pretty good.

@@danieljacobsson5258 Yes that is quite stunning too me also, that's why I took a shoot and bought it :). I guess Citizen made Swedish dials in this period for the Swedish market, maybe english was less prefered than Swedish for this type of watches. But I don't know really :)

Worth the time and effort for sure. One of my favorite pass times and serious hobbies is restoring vintage items and bringing them back to life again. At least to items (all things of the past) have stories. Untold ones of the past. If they could only talk. Paying homage by restoring back to their original grandeur is always gratifying. Time pieces most definitely have stories and have a spirit all their own. And this Citizen is no different. Great job. The Japanese craftsman that built this original watch is somewhere smiling again thats for sure.

I picked up a similar Citizen model that ran intermittently. Took it to one of the few remaining watchmakers on the East Coast, and he recommended sending it back to Citizen. They wanted $300 just to look at it. Now I understand why. I was going to tinker around with it myself, but now I’m having doubts.
@jeffreyhickman3871

That sounds worse than highway 🛣️ robbery. The watch itself is probably worth the $300.00 (if not more). I would NOT send it back to the company, which would charge that, as well. I could understand $75.00 for a repair 👨‍🔧, or something, not to simply look 👀 at the watch. I really think 🤔 they’re trying to scam you on this. Your friend, Jeff.
