Restoration of a Broken Rolex - GMT Master - Internal Damage

This time I restore a decades old Rolex GMT master. The watch came to me with very poor performance and components just fell apart inside as I conducted the restoration. This Rolex has the 3175 GMT movement and is capable of accurate performance but this is not possible when the mainspring barrel is full of dried up old grease. This Rolex is fast becoming a bit of a classic and highly collectable. The one in this video is good for another ten years now I figure.

@@Jay-xr3sb doesn't matter on disassembly being that all the parts get ultrasonically cleaned prior to reassembly.idk about anyone else who watched this video but I didn't see him touch any of the parts with bare hands upon reassembly.only seen him pick parts up with tweezers plus he's got the main plate of the movement in a holder so anytime he moves it he's grabbing movement holder and not the movement itself.

@@richardsalinetrojr1957 fair point on the parts but at 2:18 and 2:55 he handles the dial. I didnt think that would be ultrasonically cleaned? I'm the amateur, he is clearly experienced and knows what he is doing.

Thanks for letting us in on your watch restorations Richard, i made my own watch in March 2020 with an nh35a and a case dial and hands from ebay and i love it, hardly taken it off since then really like working on watches a little fiddly though, i have a one eye magnifier and it kept steaming up bit of a pain, i'll have to get one that sits on glasses like you have, but i enjoyed doing it alot why didn't i do this when i was younger, going to make another and use a 2892 or 2824, the ones you made are very nice, cheers Richard, hope you had nice Christmas as much as possible, happy new year to you and family, lovely doorbell.👍😷

Best watch maker videos I’ve seen on RU-vid! I owned a Submariner back in 2020 ended up selling it for a god awful price due to hard times. I’m totally bummed I did that. I paid around 4,500 for a brand new stainless steel sub. I just blows my mind the cost of these watches today. If one was wanting to buy a reasonable used one where would I look? Are there auctions or cheaper ways to purchase of anyone on here knows? Greatly appreciate it keep up the good work also! Thanks PS I live in the United States also Cincinnati Ohio to be exact. Maybe there’s auctions of some sort that just came to mind?

11:55 Sir...I have subscribed. I am an automatic watch fan and "novice" watch maker as you probably guessed from my few prior comments. I certainly can not get as deep into a Rolex movement as you but I can change dials and hands and go as deep into the back side as removing the rotor assy for cleaning and lubrication. I just finished a "half ass" service on one of my 3135 movements. I was running horribly slow and I was able to get it back up to spec. I don't have a beat monitor machine but I time the second hand with the stopwatch on my iPhone and after 3 days it is still within 1 second. Now...since I subscribed....how do I get the little elf to service my 3035 Submariner movement? I am happy to pay shipping to the UK and back. You can make a video and title it "why you should NOT try to service your Rolex unless you're a professional' You can even show how I scratched up the movement trying to get it going. ;)

Usually caused by too much grease being used in the barrel. When the movement then goes a long time before its next service the grease has normally turned solid. The main spring only needs a light film of grease to prevent corrosion and binding, and an auto wind mechanism needs a little braking grease on the inside wall where the end of the spring runs around. It's vital to have the movement serviced every couple of years as these greases definitely will dry out over time. Unfortunately some people buy an expensive watch, then don't spend the money on maintenance. That's a bit like buying a new sports car and never having the oil changed, then wondering why it stops working (and yeah that happens too).

Great video! I own that same watch (1675 from late 1971) and the bezel is kind of faded (nice patina to it), but it is stuck and doesn't move (hence I cannot use the GMT function). I got it serviced four years ago, and the watchmaker didn't consider its reparation. He told me there was no need...but I would like to fix it. Is it difficult? Greetings from Madrid!

This video is absolutely stunning for me! I love mechanical watches since I'm a kid and I'm in admiration of the way such mignature mechanics are made and the skills needed to make them and to repair them. Grrrrrrrreat job ! 👍🏻

Fabulous video. I own several Rolex and other high end watches. As a Ph.D engineer I marvel at the complexity and your ability to work on them!

Great photography and so good to see things go ping even for a craftsman like you. Are your tweezers non magnetic? I'm sure I'll sleep well tonight and hope that the watch fairy comes and fixes my Citizen Quartz Chronograph I'm replacing one of the dials on. Thank you bro and bless you and yours. G

Hi Gerald ... much to the amusement of a lot of watchmakers I use large brass pliers most of the time and bass does not magnetise to well so yes most of the time I am using non-megnetic tweezers. Thanks for the feedback and good wishes! Richard

I really enjoy your videos. Do you have unusually steady hands or is there a technique used to work on such small fragile parts? I also watch automatic transmission videos but they are mostly disassembly not reassembly. I think that they may be concerned about someone working on their own transmissions. Probably as rare as someone working on their watches.

Richard that is a really well-made video. whatever you charged it was worth it. There were parts of the video that reminded me of the old game OPERATION. You didn't get buzzed. Lol. Great Work!

7:48 I I went Aaaaooooooh about three tenths of a second before your on-camera Aaaaaayyyyy!. I was soooo triggered and I I've only been learning about five months now. Steep learning curve. steep, steep. Did I say steep? I've now learned the hard way: if I don't feel 100% on top of my game, I don't even touch a pair of tweezers except maybe the plastic ones I use to take batteries out of quartz movements. I do have the detritus from the vortex vacuum cleaner - and I'm hoping that the cap jewel and shock spring are both in there somewhere. They are from my practice movement (thankfully) and I can't even believe how badly I messed up that day. That's after having to make a new yoke spring for the one that joined the swiss space programme. Yes it was a very, very bad day.

Only subscribing because you were hilarious about asking. Oh, BTW, are they male or female elves? Just asking so I know what to... Oh, never mind.

Amazing, thank you. You have really steady hands. My hands shake a lot, I don´t drink much ... I spill most of it. Merry Christmas.
