I have never seen re-tinning before. Learned something today.

I'm glad you liked it. I haven't done it for a while. It looks easy but it takes some patience and a little skill. Look up videos by the street tinners in the middle eastern countries. Those people know how to do it.

Damn, what've you got against the old tin..? I get wanting to get the crud off, why do you remove the tin? Won't it just melt with the new tin?

What solution did you used for electrolisys?

That was just water and washing soda. The water is brown because the tub has been used quite a few times and that's just rust and dirt. I haven't cleaned it out between uses.

NOOOOOOOOOOO that's not tin.....it's carbon, its called seasoning and it takes years to build that much up,when you buy a new pan EVERYTHING STICKS TO IT you need a carbon layer to stop that!!!!!
@TwoHandsRestorations

I'll pass on the carbon layer. New tin is in.

@ 1:43 That sure L( .)( .)KS like a over heated burnt Black Teflon Coating;... NOT from burnt C(. )(. )KING... It's way 2 SM( .)( .)TH;... Even... It could also B a laminated Copper Base...
@TwoHandsRestorations
@TwoHandsRestorations Год назад
I didn't think it could be anything other than built up crud. If it was teflon... it's all tin now. Thanks for watching.

I agree, that pan was coated with a nonstick liner, otherwise the oven cleaner would have removed it.

I've dealt with dirty pans before and have seen the build up of crud or carbon as another commenter put it. As I stated earlier I didn't think it could be anything other than built up crud. After reading your comment again I thought... well, what if it was teflon? So, in the spirit of finding out what it was... I went to the all knowing oracle. I went to Google. I typed in "can copper cookware be coated with teflon". Nothing definitive came up but it all leaned towards a 'no'. I've had pans where the teflon coating peeled off. The coating came off differently than what you saw in the video. And the teflon coating was noticeably thicker. In addition if you watch the video again you'll see that the oven cleaner had impacted the black build up to some degree by turning a little darker in color. The back of the pan also had similar build up as well. When cleaning I didn't notice any difference in either side as far as the characteristics of the black stuff. Another note is that there was actual tin between the copper pan and the black stuff. No reason to tin a pan if you are putting a teflon coating on it. If the layer on the copper was a steel coating as you will see on some pans I don't think the muriatic acid would have affected it. Either way... I'm not an expert in any way and the modern manufacturing methods of cookware is a science I'm sure. So, although I don't believe so personally, you may very well be right. I have a couple other pans I'm doing for a friend. I'll make videos of those and post them as well. Thanks again.
