I have long wanted to deal with the backlash of the tailstock tailstock of a lathe. All the time I assumed that there should be significant wear in it and that boring of the headstock body would be required. And this case is very long and requires some preparation. But for the sake of interest, I took measurements of the internal fit and was surprised ... Not so much by the gap embedded in the joint, but by the absence of wear on parts. This meant that there was no need for boring and you could simply turn a new quill to other sizes.
The production of quills on the same not quite tuned machine is discussed in this video. Such a simple bar turning operation can be an exciting journey into the world of garage metalworking.
