3rd order for the tweeter and full range woofer without crossover and impedance correction. This speaker depends a lot on the quality of your amplifier to sound good.

Ace conversion man! In my early 30's I was the very proud owner of the Minstrels for a dozen years, I've since moved onto EL34 valves and ribbon speakers now I'm in my mid 50's, the covers you've made look ace man, hessian was it? ... Nice tunes 😊

Did you check the coil resistance and chose the new one based on the same value or is that not much of an issue?

very good restoration! You've replaced the obsolete crossover with a very nice one, you restored the port, used hi quality cables and made it look good again! One question, how did you know what crossover parts you were going to use? did you calculate it, or just looked at the cutoff frequency?
@chicagomen01
@chicagomen01 5 лет назад
I have measuring instruments the original parts are designed very well but they sound a little muted for my taste just changed the coil a little bit from 0,30mH to 0,27mH , if all people use the frequency calculator then all the speakers will sound the same you have to do something different if you want to sound good

Renewed components; MKP Caps, MOX resistors & foil inductors with better cables does create magic. - Good Job man ! But I do have question. What is the purpose of that cylinder cone attached to the magnet of the woofer ? There seems to be no air hole on the motor/magnet, I didn't get the idea of that piece... adding some metallic tones (with inner box resonance) and backfiring that "sound" in order to create a bipolar-like effect for better soundstage ?

this is the bass reflex tube, and the second bass chamber, here it is written what the pipe is for - www.roydaudio.org/models/coniston-r/
@westelaudio943
@westelaudio943 5 лет назад
Why the hell would anyone want to add metallic resonances? That would make the sound crappy.

@@chicagomen01 "An aluminium tube connects the bass unit magnet to the cabinet back and this tube provides a secondary vented chamber for the bass reflex loading. The emission of frequencies above 90 Hz is dynamically cut whilst frequencies below 90 Hz remain unaffected." - They seem to filter the port noise over 90Hz with that aluminium tube and those sponge/NFAF material. Claiming it has better bass output through the port ? Never seen or experienced anything like that...

@@westelaudio943 What I really surprised other than the aluminium tube was the woofer surrounds ! - How the hell did they survive all those years ?
@westelaudio943
@westelaudio943 5 лет назад
@@Boorock70 Why? Those are rubber. They don't decay usually. Even ones from the 60s are usually fine, and those are from the 80s, I've even seen intact foam surrounds that old.

Instead of Alco I would have done magnets just put a couple tabs or glue recess a couple of pieces of 10 and the corners of the cabinets and put magnets on the corner of the grill and you just lit right up there and I would stay there and would never come off

@@chicagomen01 Hi ! I can't be sure 100% but I guess that the speakers with the revised crossover sounds exceptionally more transparent than the original ones. To the point that this a little upsets me. What can be the true limit of an economic speaker but with a revised crossover? maybe we give a so so judgment and then discover that inside the xover there are dry capacitors ... or coils with high resistance/low quality ... not only. But if the differences are felt so much in the speakers where the signals are robust ... what happens in a preamplifier ? Could it also be that changing the passive components in series to the signal in a just decent preamp make it become really good to listen to? it takes so long ... so much dedication ... so much passion to get a truly transparent sound, really true to the live sound which is in the end the goal of high fidelity. Still many compliments for the excellent work performed. Now having reached the top performance the challenge is maybe to find less high end components with decent features. These I imagine are jewels and as such certainly not economic. Best regards, gino

Even if the idea of putting the best is still trying, there is no point in putting capacitors so expensive.

Certainly going from electrolytic to film caps will make a big difference. There are cheaper ones, but they all have difference sound characteristics, use what you like and can afford.
@universe-beer

Dear author, for the most part this is not a restoration, but rather an upgrade (revision) of the original product. As for the modification of the crossover, it has long been proven that electrolytic NP-capacitors "sound" as well as metal-paper or metal-film capacitors, and there is little sense in replacing them. But the inductance coil, here the author did the right thing, as in the original crossover, this item is made in name only. Overall, the work has been done well. Sorry for the poor English... I am from Kazakhstan (former Republic of great USSR)

I have been involved in audio for over 20 years and based on my listening experience and technical datasheets for electrolytic nad film capacitors you couldn't be farther from the truth. Apart from price and size consideration there's no technical advantage to using electrolytics anywhere really. They're necessary evil, suffering from poor tolerances, high losses and short service life with the only advantages being high capacity per unit of volume and low price ! ESR value in electrolytics is several orders of magnitude higher than for film caps and increases steadily in use, this leads to rise in their working temperature and even faster deterioration, creating a self sustaining positive feedback and ultimate failure. Moreover, Janzten film caps have one of the best price to performance ratio in loudspeaker crossover networks.
