Restoring a classic that appeared in a Bond movie. Philips Antoinette 22RL798. Part 1

Electronics Old and New by M Caldeira (Electronics Old and New)

I have long lusted for this radio, a Philips 22RL798 Antoinette Transworld de Luxe, but the prices they fetch on the auction market are generally quite steep. However, good things come to those who wait, and it was my turn to get lucky... and with a Bond Girl, no less!
This model has become very sought-after due to the fact that one appeared in a James Bond movie (Diamonds Are Forever) in 1971. I don't know if it is that special, or if the quality lives up to the hype, but I'm anxious to find out.
Stick around and decide for yourself.
Enjoy the series.
PS: When I was trying to see if the FM was working, I was actually turning the AM tuning, but … it really didn’t work anyway :)

Thank you for your wonderful videos! Just picked up at the scrap yard an L6X38t/54 in abysmal shape. Lots of cosmetics needed, rusty battery hatch, glue, paint and grime on the exterior but no leatherette rips, chrome degradation. I am anticipating a full resto on the exterior. The insides, well we shall see but your video will help me with that although the circuits are slightly different, the attachments and layout look identical. Avid watcher and thanks! Geoff

It looks like a nice radio, and a very nice project to tackle. There seems to be a lot more thoughtful engineering and product quality from electronic products that were built before the 1970's. Cudos to everyone who restores and preserves them. The electronics that are produced today won't be around in five years let alone fifty years.

I'm not really a lover of Philips equipment, mainly televisions, which I worked on some years ago when I was a television engineer. I know when they are working, they are good. I had to repair a volume control which had the same problem once. Let's hope the FM will be a straight forward fix. I don't particularly like metal grills in front of speakers, which don't sound as good as plastic or wood, but looking forward to your comment when the speaker is cleaned and back in the radio. l do like the look of the radio and I can remember seeing it in that Bond film.

It seems that Philips have come a long way since the early days in terms of serviceability. Judging by the incorrect disassembly instructions it seems they still like to make production changes without updating the service data, but all in all you can’t complain about it being difficult to work on. I do hope you don’t have to pull apart all that mechanical stuff on the top! Good luck with it. Looking forward to the next episode! Cheers

It does seem a lot easier than the recent experiences we’ve both had 😊 The mysteries in the service data is probably there to keep us on our toes. I’m watching your last video right now. Smoke is one thing, but when you don’t know where it comes from … not so good.

The fm, and medium wave are very good on this radio. But shortwave is not. It's no competion for a sattelite in that regard. I also own this 22RL798, which is a stripped down version of the L6X38t. I do own that one also, a very early model from 1965, with a totally different dial. Great radio Manuel, and you where smart to strip her down to clean it properly. Have fun! Be sure to check the discriminator diodes in the FM... Best regards from the Netherlands, Nico den Haak.

I've got a 22RL798 with low volume which I will someday try to repair. I once had a L6X38T, the previous version of this radio, in mint condition which I regret selling. The L6X38T had a built in earphone that pulled out from the rear of the radio. It also had a gain control where the fine tuning control is on the 22RL798. Most of the radios I see one bay in the US are the L6X38T version.

@@electronicsoldandnew One thing I've heard about this radio is that the metal traces on the band selector switches wear away, making the radio not operational. You are using the wrong side of the radio for finding FM signal. You should use the left side. Thats why it's not finding any signal on FM. I have 2 of these, one isn't turning on, it doesn't do anything. What should i check first? I'm not used to working with radio's, just somesort of a collector. It should have worked when last used. You are missing a small plastic part for putting the short wave antenne in when it's down.

I’m aware of the tuning on the left side, and added a comment to that effect in the description. Diagnosing a fault king-distance is tricky. That's a good looking radio and it was obviously pricey when it was new judging by the feature count. I hardly ever replace pots. What I usually find, assuming a quick squirt of switch cleaner doesn't sort it is that it needs removing and dismantling. The problem is nearly always the centre contact, the metal ring that goes round the spindle that the sliding contact works against. The metal ring is very often caked in crud and a proper clean up of this part normally restores correct operation. Now I'm not such a skinflint that I resent buying a new pot for about £2. The problem is that there are very few electronics shops left and parts have to be obtained online with the almost universal £10 charge for delivery. Yeah...£12 for a volume pot... I need to get a couple of 33 ohm resistors for my record player but when you consider the items might cost 50p - £1 only to have £10 carriage cost slapped on top, it's not really a matter of being a skinflint. Obviously the way to do it is to buy a lot of stuff at the same time but in my case there's nothing else I need. Anyway, I digress somewhat, rant over. Returning to the subject at hand, this radio looks very promising and even though it's a Philips it doesn't look like it'll be unduly baffling to deal with. Once it's done, you'll have to adopt a white Persian cat who can sit in your lap as you utter the immortal words "We've been expecting you Mr. Bond"...
@electronicsoldandnew
@electronicsoldandnew 2 года назад
