Wow, that hour went quick, and so 'FULL'. What a challenge with the carving. It turned out great, Which end was the new one??🤪. I'm pleased you put the link for the chisel strop. I did not know you could get one like that. One is on it's way to my place. I have the twin of your carving mallet, down to the crack along face Thanks for a very entertaining and informative video. BTW, I hope the growing out of the beard, did allow you to shower on a regular basis. I got worried about your comment...

I enjoyed your restoration video very much. I believe you struck a cord when you said that much of the original carving was done with a very few hand tools likely including a carving knife. During the period that the piece was made few craftsmen had a complete set of specialty carving tools. A sharp carving knife would likely have been used to complete most of the carvings shown. I would encourage you to investigate purchasing a chip carving knife. The shorter blade gives better control and can duplicate the old carvings better than a V groove chisel that tends to bruise and chip the wood. Excellent job matching the stain coloring.

I really appreciate how you incorporate simple advice, like how to avoid stripping with a slot screwdriver, as well as the history of the pieces you work on, and also just share your daily work day (the trip to the specialty lumber yard, the delight in scoring a second hand veritas tool). Not only is it entertaining and educational, but also shows your dedication to your practice. Thank you, these videos are lovely - and very relaxing! Basically a hat trick to go along with your playoff beard.

This kind of carvings are mostly carved with a carving knife, maybe some of the curves are done with a curved carving chisel. It is probably better to not use the mallet when doing these small carvings. It is easier to control the carving chisel by hand. Use a technique where you puss the chisel with one hand, and use the other hand in the opposite direction to control the speed and prevent chip outs. When you cut patterns like the “X”, make a cut straight down in the middle with the carving knife, and then do one curved side at a time, cutting against the first vertical cut. It’s amazing to see you matching and repairing these old finishes. Very nice to see these old furnitures get a new “life”.

Interesting project and as usual, you did a great job. The name 'Nooitgedagt' brought back memories. The company was founded in 1865 by Mr. Jan Nooitgedagt and it primarily produced tools and ice skates. For a few decades they also made wooden toys. Around 2000 it was taken over by a foreign company and closed a few years later. All that remains is history and there is a small museum in the town of IJlst where the company was located.

When new or experienced with wood carving, a tip to help visualize the angles being cut can be seen by taping a piece of string with a small lead weight, around the handle to hang down its side. This give you memory about the angle to put the tool before hitting it. I tend to make multiple posts, I hope I am not a bother.

As a Dutch person, i love to see the Nooitgedacht (Never thought...) chisel. They made all sorts of handtools. In fact, Nooitgedacht was a company that made ice-skates. old fashioned ones from wood and iron. Of course, in summer, nobody would buy those, so then they made tools, also from wood and iron, just like the chisel you have. That one is one of the more recent ones. Nooitgedacht went bust a long time ago unfortunately, but many of the tools still survive. I have several handplanes and chisels and also a waterlevel. all very good tools that last generations when looked after. try google translate to hear how nooit gedacht sounds in Dutch :)

Hi 👋, if you put some double sided tape under your piece of mahogany, you’ll find it will stay in place whilst you use your scraper stock moulding tall, as for your arch that needs to be carved and moulded. You need to make up a Trammell arm , you might noticed I cannot spell properly, but I know how to use my hands, you need to set your cutter into a clamp on the tram arm the other part is used as a pivoting point, and this is worked out the length or the diameter of your arch that you’re trying to copy and use it like a scraper and you fix a point to then scrape it round to start the shape of your groove you do one or two strokes you tap the blade down half a mil to a mil can you then do the same process again you slowly scrape it round the shape and carry on the process until you’ve got your desired depth,

Great work as usual. I’m always learning from your tutorials. If the playoff beard continues to get longer, it means your run is continuing! Hockey fan here and, traditionally, players will grow beards and not cut them until their team is eliminated from playoff contention. Ideally, you want to be hoisting the Stanley Cup with a big bushy beard!

This was a great episode. All kind of challenges in it. Thanks for sharing. Here's something I thought of that you might appreciate. About two and half years ago, my dishwasher (25 yrs old) died during Covid. I replaced it with the only one I could find locally. It was much fancier than the old one. About a year of heavy use, I realized there was a fine mesh filter in the bottom that periodically needed cleaning from some sort of white particulate. It was quite heavily caked as I probably should clean this at least quarterly. I tried all kinds of things to clean it and it really difficult to get clean. Finally, I soaked it overnight in white vinegar and the material dissovled/came off. It finally dawned on me that what was likely caked on the filter was protein. The white vinegar removed it by the same mechanism hide glue is reverested in joints. It brough a smile on my face. I've cleaned the filter several times since and all I need to do is soak it in white vinegar (acetic acid) overnight; it's really easy to clean by this method.

I have built, repaired, and conserved high end custom furniture professionally for many years. When carving new or replacement parts it really helps to have the right tools. For those who only need to carve parts occasionally, you can get by without having to invest a lot in carving tools. It's important to have sharp tools and since you are already familiar with diamond stones and honing guides I'll skip that part. I would recommend a 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8 inch chisels, and an X- Acto knife for most small jobs and you can add larger chisels as necessary, as well as sandpapers. Rough out the basic design using the appropriate tools and sketch out the details using a sharp pencil, then with the razor knife cut along the lines to define the image. Then using the chisels, remove the excess wood and define the contours and use the sandpaper to clean everything up. You can also invest in a cheap set of carving tools if you want and a Moto Tool with various bits. Of course, the more you practice, the better your results will be. Good luck!

@FixingFurniture what a beautiful cabinet! Proud of you for learning something new.A smart person learns something new every day I'm told. I recently challenged myself to learn chip carving based on a jewelry box my grandfather gave me. I'm enjoying @MyChipcarving. Love the fact you made your own tool! I recently picked up a good metal spatula from Dollarama and turned it into a card scraper. When I'm doing a transfer I use tape and straight pins. I tape it down first. Then I use the straight pins to push through the paper to leave tiny guide dots.

Your a brave man Scott. You did a great job on carving. I would have never tackled that part of the job. I love the cabinet and that you can see it was carved by hand. While I have your attention, I would appreciate a video on different finishes. What's the difference between shiac, lacquer and polyurethane? When is it appropriate to use each one? Can you stain over them? What is varnish? I'd like to see a detailed video(s) that explains the difference. Perhaps Thomas Johnson is willing to collaborate with you on this subject. Thnx for your teaching and expertise. Keep the videos coming.
