In this video, I begin restoring a Bed Turret for a South Bend Heavy 10 that a generous viewer sent me to have & use. My current Turret was internally damaged and I'll be restoring them both and repairing one.

Thank you for spreading the word and shaving screws lives. Helical Ramps Matter! We wouldn’t be here without them.

Is part 3 in production? Would be nice to see how everything turned out. Really would like to see something showing this, along with the collet closer and production slide in action like you started to do in the turret overview.

I leave painted parts in Purple Power for a week or so and they come out as a clean casting. Then rinse in parts washer with mineral spirits to prevent that residue.

Nice video, we love a good turret and we see one of your viewers Randy Richards RR made yours and my scribe on his lathe using the turret it was fun to watch him make those nice tools, it is great to have you sharing how the turret works and refurbishing one is nice to see. Good to see that you've gotten a break. I hope they give you enough slack to allow you to finish your shaper rebuild. I see that the "princess" vise has had to start earning it's keep. I'll have to check back in a few days to see how many comments are made about it. No doubt that by now you'll have some watching that will not know the back story on it. Turret, or Tourette??? ... the latter was my pet name for my old lantern tool post (it didn't hold well, and was the cause of many sudden outbursts of profanity). The fix for that is a work still in progress. It's been delayed by the acquisition of a surface grinder and following that, family needs.

Perfectly timed voice-over on this one. Also, I see someone’s complaining about the music here in the comments, but I thought it was great. Cool project.. looking forward to the next part.

What if? You make a rounded pocket on the stop where the stop bolts hit,so if they were slightly bent,they would be forced to the center of the pocket so they wouldn't get pushed off and get bent worse? Just a thought.

I always love seeing your work. I'm inspired by it as I'm currently restoring a Atlas 7B. In case you didn't already know, you had some audio editing overlay opportunities in here. Thanks for sharing your efforts!

I know you're a pro refurbing this stuff.. I've found using the purple power in a crock pot on low for about 2 hours will pull the oil/grease as well as 95% of the paint. 1 stop shop so to speak

Great work , wish you’d do my heavy 10l. I would like to know just what cleaners you use, in one video I believe you mention purple power and zepp purple degreasers, and of course Cyrus strip. Do you use the zepp purple straight or diluted and if diluted what dilution? The purple power seems like it’s to be used straight no dilution. After soaking overnight do you rinse in water and dry or rinse in solvent then dry, or rinse in water then solvent like wd40? The citrus strip as I understand it is brushed on heavy, paint scraped or brushed off, then rinsed, dried and painted? I am amazed at how many south bends you have rebuilt. Kudos. Another question - the beds do you scrape them or have them sent out to be regrouped? Keep up the good work!
@BasementShopGuy
@BasementShopGuy 4 года назад
All purple degreasers are straight! No diluting. I don't wash them off with water after, just wipe down with a rag. I don't touch the beds, too much money!

I think I'd agree with others here that it looked like you could braze up that stop pad a lot more easily than machining it, and I'd expect it to last just as long.

Should have said reground - stupid spell checker, I did spell it right the first time, and when I sent it the spell checker got me again.

"somebody used this allen screw as a gib screw" most likely thats the one used to LOCK it down, Like most dovetails and ways have........... prob originally was a handle with a thread?
@BasementShopGuy
@BasementShopGuy 5 лет назад
No, there wasn't any screws used to lock them. They used nuts to secure the gib-screws. But you'd never want to lock it, because it would prevent the turret from sliding.
@CraigLYoung
@CraigLYoung 5 лет назад
Instead of milling that stop down and building a new one could you braze it to build it up than mill it flat like what Keith Fenner just did?
@aceroadholder2185
@aceroadholder2185 5 лет назад
I'd have it welded up. Easy to pre-heat for welding and you get a better wearing surface than brazing.
@MrTrekFanDan
@MrTrekFanDan 5 лет назад
That's what I was thinking at first...But, I'm Captain Overkill, as usual... I would take lots of measurements, check clearances and mill it square. Then make a hardened face plate matching the original profile, then screw it on for longer life and ease of replacement.... Heck, I'd probably even mill the new face plate end cap with a thin raised perimeter shoulder to keep any bent screws from "walking" off the edge in the future. See what I mean. Overkill.

I used to use diluted purple power to clean the engine area on my vehicles but that white residue would get everywhere and it would fade out my anodized parts. Great stuff but I can’t stand the white crap it leaves behind, it’s almost like hard water stains.

Pleas kill the music. It's distracting and adds nothing to your project. Otherwise, good work.

@xenonram

@@BasementShopGuy The music is fine. If someone is distracted by some light music.... Maybe they're a candidate for Aderall, or something to help them concentrate/focus.

BasementShopGuy , Some of us can't hear as well as others can. Anything that covers up some of the sounds of normal speech just makes it harder for us to understand what you are saying. (When Andrew goes deaf, he may become a little less caustic.) But, once again, it adds nothing to your project.

There are subtiles available. The music makes the video more enjoyable!
@jonka1
@jonka1 5 лет назад
interesting video. I wish that you did not feel the need to include music as a background to your commentary. Your work is sufficiently interesting without any need for added layers of entertainment especially by means of lift-music. I notice several complaints and your response suggests that you see it as someone else's problem. Try listening to your viewers instead of insisting that it's quiet enough not to be invasive. Why not try to understand that quite obviously it is invasive which is why viewers are complaining.
@BasementShopGuy
@BasementShopGuy 5 лет назад
I guess my response is dictated by the "tone" of the comments - or more over, (and as you put it) "complaints". Suggestions are fine and often taken into consideration. It's the complaining (and often) negative tone that I really hate. (IF) I do put music, it'll be when I'm machining and not talking. Good feedback, I don't want my viewers unhappy, trust me.
