Great job. Another Stanley 45 saved from oblivion. I'm glad to see that you are interested in the preservation process. Even if you never use it it will survive for someone else to cherish. Also before I attack a old tool with abrasive, can't easily put metal back on, I soak it down for a couple of days with ordinary white vinegar . It will remove the rust without damaging surrounding surfaces such as paint or plating.

I've seen a wide variety of "how to" videos, many that were useless. Yours... Is one of the best I've ever seen. I appreciate your close-in video, step-by-step explanation of what you're doing, how to do it and why you did it the way you do.. A Great Job! Thank you!

You my friend, found a true "diamond in the rough." Great job with bringing it back to life. It looks amazing. You are right, you can't find that kind of quality and value in today's market. I hope to see more of your work.

That is the most intricate hand tool I have ever seen. Nice job restoring it and good on you recognizing that the wood was in good shape

That's quite the undertaking Kyle. I've only ever seen one in my life. An old cabinet maker that I know has one in beautiful condition but I have to be the first to admit that I know absolutely nothing about them. I remember picking it up and scratching my head and laying it right back down. Quite the intimidating piece. You did a great job as usual and I now have some clarity about how it works. Keep up the good work and cheers till the next one!

I got one for Christmas last year, in the original box, only one box of irons, not a speck of rust. Simply sweet, BUT here it is a year later and I am still learning what this sweet piece can do!! I haven't done anything to it but wipe it down with 3in1 machine oil, a little sharping and she purrs right through any wood I have put on, beautiful!!! My Dad left me his planes, but those blocks and floors are nothing like the 45!!

It is an amazing machine, but it takes quite a bit of time to learn its function. I'm really not proficient with it, but I have a basic understanding of all its functions, I believe!

Cannot deny the men of old were Craftsmen of the first rank!!! My Dad born in 1913 grew up to carpentry, and raised me the same, only problem he did not have the patience to train me completely. I learned much by watching. He did not do much finish work, ( he said he could not raise a family doing it) what he did do was excellent!! Mostly what he did was frame and lay hardwood floors, and he was fast at it!!! Anyway he left me four large boxes of tools that he had collected across the years!! Among them a collection of fourteen planes, all different!!! from the tiny palm sized shoulder plane to long floor planes!! But no 45, two others similar but different!!! Opening that package on Christmas morning, was better then opening a long buried chest of gold!!! I have never been more pleased with a gift than that one!!! That tool is like the rarest of gem, in another ten years I MAY have learned to kind of use it, but mastery will have to come in another lifetime!!!!

That's wonderful Terry! I can only imagine the joy you must have experienced. I have added a few tools to my collection, from family, over the years, and it is always so much more special. You, having multiple boxes of treasures is really special.

I have been looking on ebay for a long time for a decent condition 45. Its rare to find a good price on the full plane and set of cutters together. Some day I'll find one. As for the restoration part, I usually soak my rusty parts in EvapoRust for at least overnight and then take them to the wire wheel. Great find! awesome Video.

A quick hint Kyle, a brass white Wheel works wonders on Rusty and dirty parts. Also a synthetic type or wheel also does a great job.. a stiff white Wheel could actually remove material and that is a bad thing my friend. Me personally, I enjoy the speed of air tools. A die grinder and a soft brass wheel and it's done before ya know it. Another Great Video Kyle.. thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with all of us !!!!!

HI Kyle, Great video I really enjoyed! I have two Stanley 45s and bot are in about the same condition as yours was. The wood on the planes is rosewood and was shellacked. You could go over with a bit of denatured alcohol or even a light coat of shellac. Even a bit of paste wax if nothing more to preserve. Of course rosewood is very hard. On some other planes I have I wax the sliding wooden parts which reduces friction and make the whole operation go smoother. I have over a hundred wooden planes of many profiles. Being a cabinetmaker by trade for many years I love all my old tools as you do. If there is some tool you are looking for let me know. Here in Pennsylvania there are still quite a few old tools here and there. So Thanks again and being a first time tune in I'll be sure to keep in touch. DaveyJO in PA.

What you are identifying as a fence is actually the second skate. That is the difference between Records’s plane 43 44 which only have one skates and there is a tendency for the plane to rock. The Stanley 45 and other combination planes have two skates which gives the plane better balance while using.

Beautiful work, Kyle. I just found one here in Australia which I'm about to restore. How did you manage to remove the pin in the cutter holder in order to remove the cutter holder?

Just picked up one of the pre-1910 ones (with the flower pattern motif), original box & irons and a Stanley #113 compass plane thrown in with the same lot - all for £85. Needs some love and attention but hopefully it will come out looking as good as this did !

Excellent outcome! I'm lookin for a complete 50/050 or 45/405... I can only afford brown/rusty ones, lol. Question... if it's totally brown, can it still be polished? Is it just surface rust? Is there still nickel plating left underneath?

Kyle, nice job on the Stanley 45, I am giving up my moulding planes for the 45. Your Video showed a lot but I was looking for the detail of the pin in the screw that the blade depth adjustment wheel moves, and the removal details for the Depth Adjuster. Mine has a broken pin that engages the blade and I cannot see how the bolt is removed from the yoke that carries it. It is too long to be ejected by the adjustment wheel, so that has to be dis assembled too. Any comments on this disassembly would be helpful

GREAT video Kyle, really enjoyed your commentary. I'm not sure if you are still monitoring these comments, but I'm curious how you got those cutters so clean? I also have an old Stanley 55, it was my GreatGrandfather's, and it has been in our family since it was brand new. I even have the original box. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm, I have thought about using it many times, but it seems gimmicky to me? Like I'd still need to clean it on the wire wheel anyways?

If I was to undertake restoring my 45 again I'd start with evaporust because the wire brush created a lot of pitting. Particularly a small hard wire brush connected to a powerdrill, did the job though. A 'picador' soft wire brush connected to a high HP bench grinder might have avoided this also.

Sorry mine is at insta = furnitureUPCYCLERdude - having trouble finding which year it is (Type 1, 2, etc but poss an older model since it doesn't have the wood bit - I've heard it's rosewood handles).

Those cutters aren't "coves," they're beading cutters. Nice job on the restoration. If you want to know the proper way to sharpen a beading cutter, I suggest you take a look at Paul Sellers page. He sharpens a profiling cutter on a wooden plane, but the technique will be the same.

Hi Kile. I envy that you were able to obtain such a complete Stanley 45 and set of irons. It is a while that you published your excellent video, but nonetheless there are videos from other youtubers that could paint a more complete picture of the tool, its parts, and capabilities. If you have not seen these videos already I recommend you see them at your leisure hoping you realize the full potential of such a magnificent tool.
