I just finished restoring my first plane. It wasn't a Stanley it was a craftsman. I got it for free from an old neighbor of mine who passed away less than a year later with a battle with cancer. I thought it was a good idea to restore his plane and to learn to use it to keep his memory alive for a while. Him and his wife were extremely polite to my family when we moved here from across the country. We have a lot of the same views, and the two of them are just incredibly nice and decent human beings. Thank you for your content. I enjoy learning from your videos and I just really enjoy watching how much you care for your tools and your craft.
These videos have the same calming/soothing effect as Bob Ross's Joy of Painting. "WD-40" = "Beat the Devil out of (the brush)" I can't believe this dudes only been doing this for a couple years. He Sounds like he's been restoring hand planes since he was old enough to hold one. Incredible.
I don't even do woodwork and I learn through these videos. I have been using wd40 and sandpaper/scourering pads to remove rust from old bicycle parts, you can make a lot of chromed parts look pretty good.
right i found a set of old chrome rims that had some rust and hit it with steel wool and made it like new again, when i was doing it the two people as my house thought the steel wool would ruin the chrome but it dont scratch chrome, cleans it up to almost like new.
Must state that there is a wide range of steel wool coarseness snd the heavier will in scratch chrome. I use the 0000 quadruple ought a lot around here.
Quick and fresh video on how to bring a neglected plane back to life. One suggesting regarding issues with ugly hobby paint applied to these old ones. Try using a bit of acetone on a cotton cloth. No need to soak it, just let it stay wet for a minute or two. You'll see lacquer spray and just about everything except epoxy bubble up and be able to brush off. The underlying black Jappaning paint is baked on so it wont be damaged at all.
You brilliant Irish lad have inspired me the Welsh lad. I bought a no 4 Stanley plane and guide for the correct angle of sharpening etc and a 400/1000 grit diamond stone. You sir are a legend ✊

Just wanted to mention since this is an old plane and it's been painted, be careful that it isn't lead based paint. I know it was popular in the past in the US and frankly I'm not educated enough to know if it was just as common where you are from. There are lead testing kits you can get though, looks like a small stick, tip turns red if lead is present. Just wanted to mention because I just found your channel and have been enjoying them a lot lately, a good change from the usual wood workers I've been watching. Be safe and keep up the good work! Also! Hand tool rescue has some japanning videos (the black paint under the blue) only if you were wanting to restore it and have it looking as original as possible. Regardless it's gonna be a nice plane.
Eoin, I realize this is for the camera, but one should wait for some time after spraying WD40. Also, WD40 isn't great for really bad rust, it might never penetrate even after sitting for days. There's an old trick: transmission fluid + acetone (just be very, very careful, it's extremely flammable), this will penetrate even the worst rusted nuts and bolts in minutes. Hope this helps
What's up Eoin. I found your channel two weeks ago. You remind me of my first friend in high school, Sean, who is very Irish and loves everything that has to do with the motherland. However he has no accent whatsoever, since we were both raised here in the USA. More to your interest, I LOVE your "gusto," your energy, and joy for the craft. I also very much enjoy your informative documentaries, specifically the steam engine and the masonry. Hand tools are so conducive for those who are imaginative and spontaneous, whereas the table saw introduces unnecessary danger, especially for late-comers. I am transitioning out of cooking, becoming an electrician, and setting up a hobby wood shop. I absolutely love hand tools and am on the hunt for my first vintage tenon saw. I’ve restored many Stanley’s, Records & other timber planes. I find it very enjoyable. I got tetanus at one stage, made me a bit sick. The plane I was working on looked like it had been at the bottom of the ocean for 50 years.
Videos like this one make me wish that you did ASMR videos of just the entire sole of the plane being flattened, the irons being sharpened, and so on. It's hypnotizing for some reason.

Also there is something called the ruler sharpening by David Charlesworth. Its a method where you dont have to lap the entire back of the plane blade rather you set the 0.5mm ruler on the sharpening stone then set the back end of the blade onto it and sharpen the very tip of the plane blade because that is the only part of the blade that touches the work. Its pretty useful when theres heavy pitting on the blade.
@@robertalexander4717 it doesn’t take any life off the blade. You don’t need a perfectly flat and planar top face on a plane blade. You certainly wouldn’t do this with a chisel, but no problem with plane blade. Only thing is it changes the cutting angle slightly.
@@robertalexander4717 if anything it extends the life because you're taking off less material when flattening and sharpening. Also a few years wouldn't matter to blades that consistently last multiple generations.

By the strangest coincidence, I have exactly the same plane sitting on my desk. I have had it fir years but could never get it working. It's in great shape, but the adjustment knob at the bottom rear tends to come loose and fall off. The weird part is that your video popped up right after I finished another RU-vid video about sharpening a planer. I caught a glimpse of the opening and realized that your blue planer was exactly like mine... except for the blue paint. Now I just have to sharpen the blades and hope that I have fixed it.
It's actually not true that the planes sole has to be perfectly flat. I am of the school that having a bit of hollow grind in the back can really help the plane work easier as long as the two edges are flat. As long as the edges of the sole is flat, you would use it as a smoothing place perfectly fine. It's also of my own two cents that if you had a slight hollow grind right in front of the throat, you would get a much nicer shaving on thinner work pieces as you are allowing just that hint of space for the blade to work into. I've never found a tight throat very necessary as long as it's not too wide. You are much better off with a sharp blade rather than an ultra tight throat.

I'm working on fixing a no.4 today. It's a brand I've never heard of and it is missing it's knife and chip breaker, but I will probably be able to pick those up somewhere. It took me a year and a half to start in restoring it, so not going to stop now or it will never get done.
Paint the inside black! Much easier that trying to remove paint around the lettering and other raised bits. Still - well done! Also, the lever cap is a perfect tool for removing the blade from the chip breaker (you know how the screw from most old planes is all buggered up).
Ref.: Inside paint and taking it off... I've recently started restauring planes as well, However, The ones I received/bought/found came with quite a bit of rust, Trick, -electrolysis-, this not only removes most of the rusk, but also the paint, then it just a case of wire brushing the whole thing and voila! (and I mean, easily, no elbow greese) Just thought I'd mention it.
My dad just bought a Stanley No 7 "brand new" in a hardware store in my hometown in Mexico, paint and wood are scratched for being at the store for decades, solid mexican manufacturing and English blade, for around $20 USD 😂, imma get it on working condition
I am very jealous that you live in place where cast body planes were used and are cheaply avaiable second hand. I live in czech republic. Any old plane is a wooden plane and even they are impossible to find. So everything i get I have to get new
Paul sellers suggests lapping the sole with the frog, chip breaker and iron installed. The tension from the spring that hold the plane iron on the frog warps the sole.
In my experience the japanning on these planes is pretty resistant to paint stripper so you can often put some stripper on overpaint and splatter, let it sit for just a minute or two and then rub the paint off leaving the japanning underneath intact.

Regarding scraping the paint off of the side of the object by pushing a thin, flat wedge on a handle over top of it: In places that have real winter, we have to scrape frost, snow, and ice off of our car windows in the morning before leaving for work. Sometimes the ice can be from freezing rain, and the ice can be caked perfectly around the car's exposed surface over half an inch thick in some extreme cases. This takes a lot of scraping, heat from the other side of the window, and work to get rid of it. There's still some satisfaction here, but once I'm a few minutes into shivering because the cold wind cuts me to my bone despite all my layers and the air is cold enough to feel like it's constantly stabbing any bit of exposed skin, the satisfaction part mostly fades away. Does anyone know how deep into the Winter season it gets where Eoin lives?
No idea where he lives in Ireland but the gulf stream warms both Ireland and Britain to the point that it rarely gets below -5°C here even in the deepest winter. We do get frost on car windows though.
He lives in Cork like me, we rarely go too far below freezing even in winter and it does get cold and icy we rarely see snow. Easy thing to remember about Ireland Summer = warm rain Winter = cold rain
Hey brother, i have a question. Ive restored my own stanley no 3 and 4 and lapped them using a slat marble saddle. I have a problem when i start using it, it skips the very beginning of the wood then starts cutting. Ive resharpened and i know the blade is sharp the sole is flat but it still skitters at the beginning. Thanks man i appreciate the vid and help!
Make sure the mouth of the plane is very tight. You want to the gap to only be the thickness of the shaving your trying to achieve. And i believe the name of this 'skitting' thing is called Chatter (Of course this isn't definitely the solution but it's a possibility)
You mentioned you have a DSLR now (or some type of other camera). You need to look into getting a shot gun mic for it because the audio is pretty bad. They will set you back about $100 but worth it with your audience size.
Lapping the sides is both aesthetic and useful, if the side is 90 degrees to the sole you can use the plane as a shooting plane on a shooting board and square up rough cuts by a hand saw.

You said it wasnt an atractive tool. Youre much mistaken. A tool with the patina of manufacture in the days of old are beautiful. They shame newer tools built with modern corporate cost cutting in mind.
Stanley number four I ever got and it’s the only Stanley/plane I got And the blade is a little bit messed up. There is a dead spot and I’ve been trying to sharpen it. This is the first Stanley that I’ve ever gotten. I got it for five bucks, a steal!!, I would really like some help restoring it, but I know you live really far away, but it would be cool to meet up with you. I don’t think it’s gonna happen but yeah, I really like my Stanley but I don’t really know how to use it except that you kinda run it against the piece of wood but you are a very good help on helping me get my plane fixed up and working
Is there a reason you aren’t using aircraft paint stripper? It’s absolutely essential and removes paint in minutes. Also, it’s really satisfying to watch. It bubbles up in seconds and then it just falls off with a stiff paintbrush.
