Restoring a Wagner Ware Vintage Aluminum Oval Roaster

Recently on a trip to the world famous Brimfield Antique Show, I was lucky enough to find one of the best items I'd ever seen, and been able to afford: a genuine vintage aluminum oval roaster from Wagner Ware. I couldn't believe the price they sold this for, and there was no way I could pass this up. And now, it's time to clean up this roasting pan and get it ready for cooking, especially since the holidays are coming. Restoring this to working condition was an interesting, and successful, project, and I'm proud to share the results here with you.
Wagner Manufacturing of Sidney, Ohio was one of the most famous makers of cast iron cookware during the 20th century, but they also produced a famous line of Magnalite aluminum pots and pans as well. They went out of business in 1999, but many of those Magnalite pieces are still out there. Quite a few of these oval roasters can be seen on eBay and other sites, but the one I found at Brimfield appears to have been made even before Wagner introduced their Magnalite series. It has the same markings as a Wagner cast iron dutch oven from the 1920s to 1930s, and the patent date is inscribed underneath the lid.

I strongly recommend avoiding Barkeeper's Friend for aluminum, as it has coarse powder and contains chemicals. Instead, use Bon Ami 1886, which is just fine silica powder and soap. Bon Ami has several formulations, the 1886 will polish aluminum without scratching. I cleaned a large Magnalite roaster with Bon Ami 1886 to nearly a mirror finish. Took some elbow grease, but any cleaner requires that!

Great video!!! I am watching this because I have an OLD Hamilton Beach electric skillet that I want to clean enough to hang on my kitchen wall as an adornment, and also to use if I want to. I want it to look great because it use to belong to my mother who got it before I was born, and I am 66. Thanks.

Well produced and informative. Just the right combination of background commentary with the "how" and "with what products" essentials. An effective length too! Nothing was left unclear and you brought the video to an efficient conclusion! The brief Wagner history is masterfully stated.

THAT was impressive. The scratches give it vintage character and lets you know many a good meal was cooked inside for family and friends. You have a gem! And maybe a side hustle for friends that happen to buy a vintage roaster that needs cleaned up from decades of use. Thanks for continuing to keep vintage items useful. Lots of love and respect my friend.

I quit using aluminum cookware years ago due to the reports of link to Alzheimer’s. My parents used aluminum Clubware for years and both dies with Alzheimer’s symptoms. Know that you apply a small amount of polish just like seasoning oil on CI, but does it burn or discolor the bottom when using the Magnalite? Or smell? As usual, you did a good job with your video. You probably know this already, but Wagner Ware made two different types of aluminum pots, pans and roasters. One what all aluminum, like the one you have here. The other was the Magnalite. It was a combination of aluminum and magnesium. Thus the name "Magnalite". After claims of aluminum causing health problems, they switched to the Magnalite type.

I don’t know if you can find a way to make this idea work for you. I just purchased the aluminum griddle portion of an old Frigidaire electric griddle. It has four little metal legs that I assume were the spacers. It was off balance, too, and would rock back and forth. My husband took it out in the garage and used a rubber hammer to tap on the griddle above the spacers, on the sides that were high. It just took a few minutes, and after cooking on it twice today, it is still just fine. I’m able to use it on the front and bridge burner of my flat top range. Good luck with yours.

I have restored several pieces of Magnalite cookware and I always use the yellow can of oven cleaner for fast grease and stain removal. It wont hurt them if its left on for a five minutes or so because it is a blend of metals including magnesium. Just rinse it off and dry it well. If there are stubborn areas, then after its dry, respray and let set a few more minutes. I also use a stiff nylon brush with short bristles to get into the grooves. Some of the cookware have grooves or deep scored lines on the bottom as part of the manufacturing and a wire brush works great.

Yes, I did use the oven cleaner on the inside. I let the oven cleaner sit for 15 minutes, then scrubbed the inside out. After that I then scrubbed the inside with Bar Keepers Friend, and then again with dish soap. This was enough, I think, to completely remove the oven cleaner residue from the inside.

Hi, I was wondering if I should do the same method for my 45 yo Lodge cast iron DO? It has many years of being used on top of coals, surrounded by coals, coal burns on the top, etc. I have never cooked food directly in it other than cakes, pies, anything that would fit into a deep dish pan I used inside the DO, like especially for upside down cakes, deep dish pizza's, etc. I've cleaned it with dish soap and water to try to unsuccessfully get the burn marks out but was always hesitant to use abrasives. What would you do to make it look as good as your roaster?
@castironchaos
@castironchaos 2 года назад
It sounds like you could strip your pot to the bare metal, and then re-season it. There are quite a few videos here on RU-vid giving instructions on doing it. You could use Easy Off, but because it's cast iron you can use the yellow can with lye-based oven cleaner. Try this method and soak it for a long time, maybe a week or more: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2Pvf0m9jTeE.html&ab_channel=TheCulinaryFanatic or ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-D9A5qv8zr9E.html&ab_channel=ManLand121

@@bdh3949 The major difference is the aluminum is more fragile than cast iron: it can scratch, and *especially* do not use lye to clean it, including yellow can Easy Off.
